Apocrypha · Chapter 55 of 65

1 Clement 55

Letter to the Corinthians

Let us take examples from the pagans themselves. Many kings and princes, at a time of pestilence, being ordered by some oracle, delivered themselves to death to free their citizens by their own blood.

2Many withdrew from their own cities, so that there would be no more sedition.

3We know that many among us delivered themselves to prison, to free others.

4Many sold themselves into slavery and, receiving the price of themselves, fed others.
