When the tyrants saw him thus insuperable in his determinations, and unchanged by their compassion, the guards brought him to the fire.
2There with cruelly devised instruments they burned him, and poured foul liquids into his nostrils.
3When he was already burned to the bones and was about to expire, he raised his eyes to God and said:
4You know, O God, that being able to save myself, I am dying in the torments of fire because of the law.
5Be merciful to your people, and let our punishment be sufficient for them.
6Make my blood a purification for them, and take my life as a ransom for their life.
7And having said this, the holy man died nobly in his torments.
8And by reason he resisted even unto death the pains of fire in the name of the law.
9Certainly, therefore, pious reason is sovereign over the passions.
10If the passions had conquered reason, we would have given testimony to their power.
