Truth as solidity: what you can lean on without falling.

Emet comes from the same root as emunah and amen. Truth here is not first the match between a sentence and a fact — it is reliability, what does not give way when you put your weight on it. That is why the pair chesed ve-emet (“mercy and truth”) appears so often describing God's character: they are the two faces of someone who can be trusted.
