A philosophical treatise disguised as a sermon: the thesis is that devout reason masters the passions, and the proof is seven brothers tortured one by one in front of their mother, none of them yielding.
Where this text comes from
Greek, probably 1st century AD, written by a Jew trained in Stoic philosophy. The style is cultivated Greek rhetoric applied to Jewish material.
Why it is not in the Bible
Outside the canons, though it appears in the appendix of important Greek manuscripts and is treated with respect in the Orthodox tradition, where the mother and her seven sons are venerated.
