4 Macabeus 6

1Quando os tiranos o viram assim insuperável em suas determinações, e inalterado por sua compaixão, os guardas o trouxeram ao fogo.

1When the tyrants saw him thus insuperable in his determinations, and unchanged by their compassion, the guards brought him to the fire.

2Ali com instrumentos cruelmente imaginados o queimaram, e lançaram líquidos fétidos em suas narinas.

2There with cruelly devised instruments they burned him, and poured foul liquids into his nostrils.

3Quando ele já estava queimado até os ossos e estava para expirar, levantou os olhos a Deus e disse:

3When he was already burned to the bones and was about to expire, he raised his eyes to God and said:

4Tu sabes, ó Deus, que podendo salvar-me, estou morrendo em tormentos de fogo por causa da lei.

4You know, O God, that being able to save myself, I am dying in the torments of fire because of the law.

5Sê misericordioso para com teu povo, e que nosso castigo seja suficiente por eles.

5Be merciful to your people, and let our punishment be sufficient for them.

6Faz meu sangue ser uma purificação deles, e toma minha vida como resgate pela vida deles.

6Make my blood a purification for them, and take my life as a ransom for their life.

7E tendo dito isto, o homem santo morreu nobremente em seus tormentos.

7And having said this, the holy man died nobly in his torments.

8E pela razão resistiu até a morte às dores do fogo em nome da lei.

8And by reason he resisted even unto death the pains of fire in the name of the law.

9Certamente, portanto, a razão piedosa é soberana sobre as paixões.

9Certainly, therefore, pious reason is sovereign over the passions.

10Se as paixões tivessem vencido a razão, teríamos dado testemunho de seu poder.

10If the passions had conquered reason, we would have given testimony to their power.
