Apocrypha · Chapter 2 of 5

Gospel of Bartholomew 2

Questions to Jesus

Jesus answered: 'Blessed are you, Bartholomew, my beloved, because it was given to you to behold this mystery.'

2'When I disappeared from the cross, I descended to the Underworld to bring out Adam and all who were with him.'

3'Yielding to the pleas of the archangel Gabriel, I descended with my angels to the Underworld to break the bolts.'

4The angels directed their clamors to the powers, saying: 'Lift up, O princes, the everlasting gates!'

5And the Underworld said: 'Who is this King of Glory who comes from heaven to us?'

6The Devil said: 'Do not lose heart, Underworld; God does not descend to earth.'

7The Underworld said: 'I already feel the breath of God. For our perdition, the end of all things has come.'
