Apocrypha · Chapter 12 of 16

Didache 12

Doctrine of the Apostles

Receive everyone who comes in the name of the Lord, and then test him and know him; for you shall have discernment to the right and to the left.

2If the one who comes is a traveler, help him as much as you can; but he shall not remain with you more than two or three days, if there is need.

3If he wishes to stay with you, being a craftsman, let him work and eat.

4But if he has no trade, provide according to your understanding, that, as a Christian, he may not live among you idle.

5If he will not do so, he is a Christ-peddler. Beware of such.

About Didache

A handbook of the Christian community from the end of the 1st century: the two ways, how to baptise, how to pray, how to celebrate the eucharist and how to spot a prophet who is in it for himself.
