Apocrypha · Chapter 22 of 25

Protoevangelium of James 22

Infancy of Mary

When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became angry and sent his assassins, giving them the mission to murder all the children under two years of age.

2And when the news of the slaughter of the children reached Mary, she was filled with fear and, wrapping her son in swaddling clothes, placed him in a manger.

3And when Elizabeth learned that they were also looking for her son John, she took him and carried him to a mountain and began to see where she would hide him. And, between sobs, she exclaimed: 'O Mountain of God, receive in your bosom the mother with her son.'

4And at that instant the mountain opened its entrails to receive them. A great light accompanied them, for an angel of God was with them to guard them.
