Protoevangelho de Tiago 22

1Ao dar-se conta Herodes de que havia sido enganado pelos magos, encolerizou-se e enviou seus sicários, dando-lhes a missão de assassinar a todos os meninos de menos de dois anos.

1When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became angry and sent his assassins, giving them the mission to murder all the children under two years of age.

2E quando chegou até Maria a notícia da matança das crianças, encheu-se de temor e, envolvendo seu filho em fraldas, colocou-o numa manjedoura.

2And when the news of the slaughter of the children reached Mary, she was filled with fear and, wrapping her son in swaddling clothes, placed him in a manger.

3E quando Isabel inteirou-se de que também buscavam a seu filho João, pegou-o e levou-o a uma montanha e pôs-se a ver onde o haveria de esconder. E, entre soluços, exclamou: 'Ó Montanha de Deus, recebe em teu seio a mãe com seu filho.'

3And when Elizabeth learned that they were also looking for her son John, she took him and carried him to a mountain and began to see where she would hide him. And, between sobs, she exclaimed: 'O Mountain of God, receive in your bosom the mother with her son.'

4E nesse instante abriu a montanha suas entranhas para recebê-los. Acompanhou-os uma grande luz, pois estava com eles um anjo de Deus para guardá-los.

4And at that instant the mountain opened its entrails to receive them. A great light accompanied them, for an angel of God was with them to guard them.
