The proper Name of God, revealed to Moses at the burning bush.

Four consonants, with no recorded vowels — Jewish tradition avoids pronouncing it and reads Adonai (“Lord”) in its place. Hence the convention of writing LORD in small capitals in translations. The form “Jehovah” arose in the Middle Ages from combining the consonants of YHWH with the vowels of Adonai.
