LUX VERITAS

Dictionary entry

עִירִין

Watchers

‘irin (grigori)

Angels charged with observing humankind, who abandoned their post.

Called “those who watch”, they appear in Daniel as heavenly sentinels and take a central role in Enoch: two hundred of them descend under the leadership of Semyaza and Azazel, teach forbidden arts — the forging of weapons, sorcery, cosmetics, astrology — and are judged. Tradition points to them as the origin of the corruption preceding the Flood.
