Sheol

The dwelling of the dead in Hebrew thought — neither heaven nor hell.

It is the common place of all who die, described as a land of silence, dust and shadow. It does not correspond to the Christian hell: in the Old Testament, the righteous and the wicked alike go down to Sheol. The Septuagint renders it as Hades, and it is that word which passes into the New Testament.
