Pseudepigrapha

A work attributed to an ancient author who did not write it.

A common practice in antiquity: an author signed with the name of a patriarch or apostle to place his work within a line of authority. Such is the case of texts like the Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs and much of the Enochic literature. In the ancient world this was not necessarily seen as forgery, but as belonging to a tradition.
