Navi

A prophet is a spokesman, not a fortune teller: he speaks for another, in the present.

The navi is the one through whose mouth another speaks — the image the Bible itself uses is Aaron as Moses' “prophet”. That is why most of what the prophets say is about now: denouncing injustice, calling for return. Foretelling exists, but it is a minority and almost always conditional: change the behaviour and the outcome changes, as in Jonah.
