Euangelion

Gospel was the empire's victory bulletin — long before it was a book.

Euangelion was the official announcement of a military victory or of an emperor's accession, read out in public. The first Christians take the word from Rome's vocabulary and apply it to a crucified man — an obvious political provocation to anyone listening. Only in the second century does the term also come to name the four books.
