Codex

A book of sewn pages — the technology that replaced the scroll.

Christians adopted the codex format long before the rest of the ancient world, which made it possible to gather several writings into a single volume. The great biblical codices — Sinaiticus (4th c.), Vaticanus (4th c.) and Alexandrinus (5th c.) — are the most complete witnesses to the Greek text.
