The “measuring rod”: the list of books a tradition accepts as Scripture.

The Greek word denoted a measuring rod. The Jewish canon closes around the second century; the Christian one consolidates between the fourth and sixteenth centuries, with different lists among Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants. The Ethiopian Bible, for instance, includes Enoch and Jubilees.
