Covenant

A solemn pact creating a permanent bond between two parties.

Sealed with blood, salt or a shared meal, the berit structures the whole biblical narrative: Noah, Abraham, Sinai, David and, at last, the “new covenant” announced by Jeremiah. The corresponding Greek term, diathēkē, is what gives the two “Testaments” their name.
