LUX VERITAS

Apócrifos

Prayer of Manasseh 1

O Lord Almighty, God of our fathers, of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and of all their righteous offspring;

You who created the heavens and the earth, with everything in them;

Who chained the sea with your mighty word, who confined the abyss, sealing it with your terrible and glorious Name;

At which all things tremble and quake before your power;

No one can sustain the splendor of your glory, and your wrath against sinners is unbearable,

Although without measure and without limit is your promised mercy;

You are the Lord of the Heights, of immense compassion, great tolerance and gigantic mercy; you show pity with human suffering!

O Lord, according to your immense goodness, you promised penitence and forgiveness to those who sinned against You, and in your countless clemency you pointed the way of penitence to sinners so that they might be saved.

Thus, Lord, God of the righteous, you did not appoint penitence for the righteous, for Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, who did not sin against You, but you appointed penitence for me, who am a sinner.

The sins I have committed are greater than the grains of sand of the sea; my transgressions are many, O Lord: they have multiplied! I am not worthy to lift my eyes to the heavens because of the multitude of my iniquities.

I am weighed down with heavy chains of iron; I have been rejected because of my sins, and I receive no consolation for having provoked your wrath and having done what is evil in your sight.

Now I bow the knees of my heart and implore your mercy. I have sinned, Lord! I have sinned, and I acknowledge my transgressions.

Ardently I implore you: forgive me, Lord! Forgive me! Do not destroy me with my transgressions! Do not be angry with me forever, nor keep the evil for me! Do not condemn me to the depths of the earth!

You are, Lord, the God of those who repent,

And in me you will manifest your goodness; for, wretched as I am, you will save me by your great mercy,

And I will pray to You unceasingly all the days of my life. For all the heavenly host proclaims your honor and yours is the glory forever. Amen.
