My son, flee from every evil and from every appearance of evil.
Be not prone to anger, for anger leads to murder. Be not jealous, nor quarrelsome, nor hot-tempered, for from all these murders are generated.
My son, be not given to lust, for lust leads to fornication. Be not a foul-speaker, nor bold in looks, for from all these adulteries are generated.
My son, be not an observer of omens, for it leads to idolatry. Be not an enchanter, nor an astrologer, nor a purifier, nor desire to look at these things, for from all these idolatry is generated.
My son, be not a liar, for lying leads to theft. Be not a money-lover, nor vain, for from all these thefts are generated.
My son, be not a murmurer, for it leads to blasphemy. Be not stubborn nor evil-minded, for from all these blasphemies are generated.
Rather, be meek, for the meek shall inherit the earth. Be patient and compassionate, and without malice, and gentle, and good.
Tremble always at the words you have heard. Do not exalt yourself, nor give excessive confidence to your soul.
Your soul shall not join with the arrogant, but with the righteous and humble it shall have its company. Accept whatever happens to you as good, knowing that without God nothing occurs.
