1Deus concede, portanto, perdão dos pecados passados; quanto aos futuros, cada um decide por si. Arrepender-se é condenar as ações passadas e pedir que o Pai as esqueça, pois só Ele é capaz de desfazer o que foi feito, pela misericórdia que dEle procede, e apagar os antigos pecados com o orvalho do Espírito. 'Pois no estado em que te encontrar, Eu te julgarei': é isso também que o fim de todas as coisas proclama em cada caso. Assim, mesmo alguém que tenha praticado as maiores boas obras durante a vida, mas ao final se lance precipitadamente à maldade, vê perdidos todos os seus esforços anteriores, pois, na catástrofe do drama, abandonou seu papel. Por outro lado, quem antes viveu mal e dissolutamente pode, ao arrepender-se depois, vencer durante o tempo posterior ao arrependimento a má conduta de longo período. Mas é preciso grande cuidado, assim como corpos atingidos por doença prolongada necessitam de regime e atenção especial. Ladrão, desejas obter perdão? Não roubes mais. Adúltero, não ardas mais de desejo. Fornicador, vive doravante castamente. Tu que roubaste, restitui e restitui mais do que tiraste. Falsa testemunha, pratica a verdade. Perjuro, não jures mais e extirpa as demais paixões: ira, desejo, tristeza e medo; para que, no fim, se descubra que já neste mundo te reconciliaste com o adversário. Talvez seja impossível erradicar de uma vez as paixões inatas; mas, pelo poder de Deus, pela intercessão humana, pela ajuda dos irmãos, pelo arrependimento sincero e pelo cuidado constante, elas são corrigidas.

1Forgiveness of past sins, then, God gives; but of future, each one gives to himself. And this is to repent, to condemn the past deeds, and beg oblivion of them from the Father, who only of all is able to undo what is done, by mercy proceeding from Him, and to blot out former sins by the dew of the Spirit. So that even in the case of one who has done the greatest good deeds in his life, but at the end has run headlong into wickedness, all his former pains are profitless to him, since at the catastrophe of the drama he has given up his part; while it is possible for the man who formerly led a bad and dissolute life, on afterwards repenting, to overcome in the time after repentance the evil conduct of a long time. But it needs great carefulness, just as bodies that have suffered by protracted disease need regimen and special attention. Thief, dost thou wish to get forgiveness? steal no more. Adulterer, burn no more. Fornicator, live for the future chastely. Thou who hast robbed, give back, and give back more than . False witness, practise truth. Perjurer, swear no more, and extirpate the rest of the passions, wrath, lust, grief, fear; that thou mayest be found at the end to have previously in this world been reconciled to the adversary. It is then probably impossible all at once to eradicate inbred passions; but by God's power and human intercession, and the help of brethren, and sincere repentance, and constant care, they are corrected.
