1A probabilidade da ressurreição.

1RESURRECTION PROBABLE.

2Pois esta natureza humana, à qual desde o princípio, segundo o propósito de seu Criador, foi atribuída a desigualdade, tem vida e duração desiguais, interrompidas ora pelo sono, ora pela morte e pelas mudanças próprias de cada etapa da vida, enquanto as que se seguem às primeiras não se podem ver claramente de antemão. Teria alguém acreditado, sem a lição da experiência, que na semente macia e uniforme em todas as suas partes estivesse depositada tamanha variedade e quantidade de grandes forças, ou de massas que assim surgem e se consolidam — refiro-me aos ossos, nervos, cartilagens, músculos, carne, intestinos e às demais partes do corpo?

2For this nature of men, which has inequality allotted to it from the first, and according to the purpose of its Maker, has an unequal life and continuance, interrupted sometimes by sleep, at another time by death, and by the changes incident to each period of life, whilst those which follow the first are not clearly seen beforehand. Would any one have believed, unless taught by experience, that in the soft seed alike in all its parts there was deposited such a variety and number of great powers, or of masses, which in this way arise and become consolidated--I mean of bones, and nerves, and cartilages, of muscles too, and flesh, and intestines, and the other parts of the body?

3Pois nada disso se vê na semente ainda úmida; nem nas crianças se manifestam as características dos adultos; nem na idade adulta, as dos que passaram da flor da idade; nem nestes, as dos que envelheceram.

3For neither in the yet moist seed is anything of this kind to be seen, nor even in infants do any of those things make their appearance which pertain to adults, or in the adult period what belongs to those who are past their prime, or in these what belongs to such as have grown old.

4Embora algumas das coisas que mencionei não mostrem em absoluto, e outras apenas tenuemente, a sequência natural e as mudanças que sobrevêm à natureza humana, todos os que não têm o juízo obscurecido pelo vício ou pela preguiça sabem que primeiro deve haver a deposição da semente; que, depois de ela se organizar completamente em todos os membros e partes e a prole vir à luz, seguem-se o crescimento próprio da primeira fase da vida e a maturidade que acompanha esse crescimento; depois da maturidade, vem o enfraquecimento das forças físicas até a velhice e, quando o corpo está desgastado, sua dissolução.

4But although some of the things I have said exhibit not at all, and others but faintly, the natural sequence and the changes that come upon the nature of men, yet all who are not blinded in their judgment of these matters by vice or sloth, know that there must be first the depositing of the seed, and that when this is completely organized in respect of every member and part and the progeny comes forth to the light, there comes the growth belonging to the first period of life, and the maturity which attends growth, and after the maturity the slackening of the physical powers till old age, and then, when the body is worn out, its dissolution.

5Assim, nessa matéria, embora nem a semente traga inscritas em si a vida ou a forma dos homens, nem a vida traga inscrita a dissolução nos elementos primordiais, a sucessão dos acontecimentos naturais torna crível o que, pelos próprios fenômenos, não teria credibilidade. Com muito mais razão, portanto, a razão, ao descobrir a verdade a partir da sequência natural, oferece fundamento para crer na ressurreição, pois é mais segura e mais forte que a experiência para estabelecer a verdade.

5As, therefore, in this matter, though neither the seed has inscribed upon it the life or form of men, nor the life the dissolution into the primary elements; the succession of natural occurrences makes things credible which have no credibility from the phenomena themselves, much more does reason, tracing out the truth from the natural sequence, afford ground for believing in the resurrection, since it is safer and stronger than experience for establishing the truth.
