Evangelho do Pseudo-Mateus 9

1Capítulo.

1Chapter.

2Ora, aconteceu que, quando ela tinha quatorze anos, e por esse motivo houve ocasião para os fariseus dizerem que agora era costume que nenhuma mulher daquela idade permanecesse no templo de Deus, eles decidiram enviar um arauto por todas as tribos de Israel, para que no terceiro dia todos se reunissem no templo do Senhor.

2Now it came to pass, when she was fourteen years old, and on this account there was occasion for the Pharisees' saying that it was now a custom that no woman of that age should abide in the temple of God, they fell upon the plan of sending a herald through all the tribes of Israel, that on the third day all should come together into the temple of the Lord.

3E quando todo o povo se reuniu, levantou-se Abiatar, o sumo sacerdote, e subiu num degrau mais alto, para ser visto e ouvido por todo o povo; e quando se obteve grande silêncio, ele disse: Ouvi-me, ó filhos de Israel, e recebei minhas palavras em vossos ouvidos.

3And when all the people had come together, Abiathar the high priest rose, and mounted on a higher step, that he might be seen and heard by all the people; and when great silence had been obtained, he said: Hear me, O sons of Israel, and receive my words into your ears.

4Desde que este templo foi construído por Salomão, tem havido nele virgens, filhas de reis e filhas de profetas, e de sumos sacerdotes e sacerdotes; e eles eram ótimos e dignos de admiração.

4Ever since this temple was built by Solomon, there have been in it virgins, the daughters of kings and the daughters of prophets, and of high priests and priests; and they were great, and worthy of admiration.

5Mas quando atingiram a idade adequada, foram dados em casamento, seguiram o curso de suas mães antes deles e agradaram a Deus.

5But when they came to the proper age they were given in marriage, and followed the course of their mothers before them, and were pleasing to God.

6Mas uma nova ordem de vida foi descoberta somente por Maria, que promete permanecer virgem para Deus.

6But a new order of life has been found out by Mary alone, who promises that she will remain a virgin to God.

7Portanto, parece-me que, através da nossa investigação e da resposta de Deus, devemos tentar determinar a quem ela deve ser confiada.

7Wherefore it seems to me, that through our inquiry and the answer of God we should try to ascertain to whose keeping she ought to be entrusted.

8Então estas palavras agradaram a toda a sinagoga.

8Then these words found favour with all the synagogue.

9E a sorte foi lançada pelos sacerdotes sobre as doze tribos, e a sorte caiu sobre a tribo de Judá.

9And the lot was cast by the priests upon the twelve tribes, and the lot fell upon the tribe of Judah.

10E o sacerdote disse: Amanhã venha todo aquele que não tem mulher e traga a sua vara na mão.

10And the priest said: To-morrow let every one who has no wife come, and bring his rod in his hand.

11De onde aconteceu que José trouxe sua vara junto com os jovens.

11Whence it happened that Joseph brought his rod along with the young men.

12E, tendo as varas sido entregues ao sumo sacerdote, ele ofereceu um sacrifício ao Senhor Deus e consultou ao Senhor.

12And the rods having been handed over to the high priest, he offered a sacrifice to the Lord God, and inquired of the Lord.

13E o Senhor lhe disse: Coloque todas as suas varas no Santo dos Santos de Deus, e deixe-os permanecer lá, e ordene-lhes que venham até você amanhã para recuperar suas varas; e o homem da ponta de cuja vara uma pomba sairá e voará para o céu, e em cuja mão a vara, quando devolvida, exibir este sinal, a ele que Maria seja entregue para ser guardada.

13And the Lord said to him: Put all their rods into the holy of holies of God, and let them remain there, and order them to come to thee on the morrow to get back their rods; and the man from the point of whose rod a dove shall come forth, and fly towards heaven, and in whose hand the rod, when given back, shall exhibit this sign, to him let Mary be delivered to be kept.

14No dia seguinte, então, todos reunidos cedo e feita uma oferta de incenso, o sumo sacerdote foi ao Santo dos Santos e trouxe as varas.

14On the following day, then, all having assembled early, and an incense-offering having been made, the high priest went into the holy of holies, and brought forth the rods.

15E depois de distribuir as varas, e de nenhuma delas saiu a pomba, o sumo sacerdote vestiu os doze sinos e o manto sacerdotal; e entrando no Santo dos Santos, fez ali um holocausto e fez uma oração.

15And when he had distributed the rods, and the dove came forth out of none of them, the high priest put on the twelve bells and the sacerdotal robe; and entering into the holy of holies, he there made a burnt-offering, and poured forth a prayer.

16E o anjo do Senhor apareceu-lhe, dizendo: Aqui está a vara mais curta, da qual não prestaste conta; tu a trouxeste com as outras, mas não a tiraste com eles.

16And the angel of the Lord appeared to him, saying: There is here the shortest rod, of which thou hast made no account: thou didst bring it in with the rest, but didst not take it out with them.

17Quando você o tiver tirado e dado a quem o pertence, nele aparecerá o sinal de que te falei.

17When thou hast taken it out, and hast given it him whose it is, in it will appear the sign of which I spoke to thee.

18Agora, essa foi a vara de José; e por ser velho, ele foi rejeitado, por assim dizer, para não recebê-la, mas ele próprio também não desejava pedir de volta sua vara.

18Now that was Joseph's rod; and because he was an old man, he had been cast off, as it were, that he might not receive her, but neither did he himself wish to ask back his rod.

19E quando ele estava humildemente por último, o sumo sacerdote clamou-lhe em alta voz, dizendo: Vem, José, e recebe a tua vara; pois estamos esperando por você.

19And when he was humbly standing last of all, the high priest cried out to him with a loud voice, saying: Come, Joseph, and receive thy rod; for we are waiting for thee.

20E José subiu tremendo, porque o sumo sacerdote o chamara em alta voz.

20And Joseph came up trembling, because the high priest had called him with a very loud voice.

21Mas assim que ele estendeu a mão e segurou sua vara, imediatamente do topo dela saiu uma pomba mais branca que a neve, extremamente bela, que, depois de muito voar sobre os telhados do templo, finalmente voou em direção aos céus.

21But as soon as he stretched forth his hand, and laid hold of his rod, immediately from the top of it came forth a dove whiter than snow, beautiful exceedingly, which, after long flying about the roofs of the temple, at length flew towards the heavens.

22Então todo o povo felicitou o velho, dizendo: Tu foste abençoado na tua velhice, ó pai José, visto que Deus te mostrou apto para receber Maria.

22Then all the people congratulated the old man, saying: Thou hast been made blessed in thine old age, O father Joseph, seeing that God hath shown thee to be fit to receive Mary.

23E os sacerdotes lhe disseram: Toma-a, porque de toda a tribo de Judá só tu foste escolhido por Deus; Joseph começou timidamente a dirigir-se a eles, dizendo: Sou velho e tenho filhos; por que você me entrega esta criança, que é mais nova que meus netos? Então disse-lhe Abiatar, o sumo sacerdote: Lembra-te, José, de como Datã, Abiron e Core pereceram, porque desprezaram a vontade de Deus.

23And the priests having said to him, Take her, because of all the tribe of Judah thou alone hast been chosen by God; Joseph began bashfully to address them, saying: I am an old man, and have children; why do you hand over to me this infant, who is younger than my grandsons? Then Abiathar the high priest said to him: Remember, Joseph, how Dathan and Abiron and Core perished, because they despised the will of God.

24Assim acontecerá contigo, se desprezares isto que te é ordenado por Deus.

24So will it happen to thee, if thou despise this which is commanded thee by God.

25José respondeu-lhe: Na verdade não desprezo a vontade de Deus; mas serei seu guardião até que eu possa me certificar, a respeito da vontade de Deus, de qual dos meus filhos pode tê-la como esposa.

25Joseph answered him: I indeed do not despise the will of God; but I shall be her guardian until I can ascertain concerning the will of God, as to which of my sons can have her as his wife.

26Que algumas virgens de suas companheiras, com quem ela possa passar seu tempo, sejam dadas como consolo para ela.

26Let some virgins of her companions, with whom she may meanwhile spend her time, be given for a consolation to her.

27Abiatar, o sumo sacerdote, respondeu e disse: Na verdade, cinco virgens lhe serão dadas para consolação, até que chegue o dia determinado em que você poderá recebê-la; pois com nenhum outro ela pode se unir em casamento.

27Abiathar the high priest answered and said: Five virgins indeed shall be given her for consolation, until the appointed day come in which thou mayst receive her; for to no other can she be joined in marriage.

28Então José recebeu Maria, e as outras cinco virgens que deveriam estar com ela na casa de José.

28Then Joseph received Mary, with the other five virgins who were to be with her in Joseph's house.

29Essas virgens eram Rebecca, Sephora, Susanna, Abigea e Cael; ao qual o sumo sacerdote dava a seda, e o azul, e o linho fino, e a carmesim, e a púrpura, e o linho fino.

29These virgins were Rebecca, Sephora, Susanna, Abigea, and Cael; to whom the high priest gave the silk, and the blue, and the fine linen, and the scarlet, and the purple, and the fine flax.

30Pois lançaram sortes entre si sobre o que cada virgem deveria fazer, e a púrpura para o véu do templo do Senhor coube a Maria.

30For they cast lots among themselves what each virgin should do, and the purple for the veil of the temple of the Lord fell to the lot of Mary.

31E quando ela conseguiu, aquelas virgens lhe disseram: Já que és a última, e humilde, e mais jovem que todas, mereceste receber e obter a púrpura.

31And when she had got it, those virgins said to her: Since thou art the last, and humble, and younger than all, thou hast deserved to receive and obtain the purple.

32E dizendo assim, por assim dizer, em palavras de aborrecimento, começaram a chamá-la de rainha das virgens.

32And thus saying, as it were in words of annoyance, they began to call her queen of virgins.

33Enquanto, porém, faziam isso, o anjo do Senhor apareceu no meio deles, dizendo: Estas palavras não devem ter sido proferidas como forma de aborrecimento, mas profetizadas como uma profecia muitíssimo verdadeira.

33While, however, they were so doing, the angel of the Lord appeared in the midst of them, saying: These words shall not have been uttered by way of annoyance, but prophesied as a prophecy most true.

34Eles tremeram, portanto, ao ver o anjo e às suas palavras, e pediram-lhe que os perdoasse e orasse por eles.

34They trembled, therefore, at the sight of the angel, and at his words, and asked her to pardon them, and pray for them.
