1Vamos, tu que desejas satisfazer uma curiosidade melhor: se a aplicares à tua salvação, percorre as igrejas apostólicas, nas quais ainda se destacam, em seus lugares, as próprias cátedras dos apóstolos, e nas quais seus escritos autênticos são lidos, fazendo ouvir a voz e apresentando o rosto de cada um deles. A Acaia está bem perto de ti: ali encontras Corinto. Como não estás longe da Macedônia, tens Filipos e também os tessalonicenses. Se podes atravessar para a Ásia, encontrarás Éfeso. E, como estás perto da Itália, tens Roma, da qual nos chega às mãos até a autoridade dos próprios apóstolos.

1Come now, you who would indulge a better curiosity, if you would apply it to the business of your salvation, run over the apostolic churches, in which the very thrones of the apostles are still pre-eminent in their places, in which their own authentic writings are read, uttering the voice and representing the face of each of them severally. Achaia is very near you, (in which) you find Corinth. Since you are not far from Macedonia, you have Philippi; (and there too) you have the Thessalonians. Since you are able to cross to Asia, you get Ephesus. Since, moreover, you are close upon Italy, you have Rome, from which there comes even into our own hands the very authority (of apostles themselves).

2Como é feliz essa igreja, sobre a qual os apóstolos derramaram toda a sua doutrina juntamente com o sangue! Ali Pedro sofreu uma paixão semelhante à de seu Senhor; ali Paulo conquistou a coroa numa morte semelhante à de João; ali o apóstolo João foi primeiro mergulhado, sem sofrer dano, em óleo fervente, e depois enviado ao exílio numa ilha. Vê o que ela aprendeu, o que ensinou e que comunhão manteve até com nossas igrejas da África! Reconhece um só Senhor Deus, Criador do universo, e Jesus Cristo, nascido da Virgem Maria, Filho de Deus Criador; reconhece também a ressurreição da carne.
