Sobre a Paciência (Tertuliano) 11

1Quanto à regra da paz, tão agradável a Deus, quem, neste mundo propenso à impaciência, perdoará sequer uma vez a seu irmão, quanto mais sete ou setenta e sete vezes? Quem, ao pensar em processar o adversário, resolverá a questão por acordo sem antes arrancar a contrariedade, a dureza de coração e a amargura, frutos venenosos da impaciência? Como poderás perdoar para que sejas perdoado, se a falta de paciência te faz apegar-te à ofensa? Quem guarda no íntimo discórdia com o irmão não terminará de oferecer seu dom devido no altar sem primeiro voltar à paciência com o propósito de reconciliar-se com ele. Se o sol se põe sobre nossa ira, corremos perigo: não nos é permitido passar sequer um dia sem paciência.

1As regards the rule of peace, which is so pleasing to God, who in the world that is prone to impatience will even once forgive his brother, I will not say "seven times," or "seventy-seven times?" Who that is contemplating a suit against his adversary will compose the matter by agreement, unless he first begin by lopping off chagrin, hardheartedness, and bitterness, which are in fact the poisonous outgrowths of impatience? How will you "remit, and remission shall be granted" you? if the absence of patience makes you tenacious of a wrong? No one who is at variance with his brother in his mind, will finish offering his "duteous gift at the altar," unless he first, with intent to "re-conciliate his brother," return to patience. If "the sun go down over our wrath," we are in jeopardy: we are not allowed to remain one day without patience.

3admira que ela também sirva ao Arrependimento, habituado a socorrer os que caíram? Quando há dissolução do matrimônio por aquela causa que torna lícito ao marido ou à mulher perseverar na viuvez perpétua, ela espera, anseia e, por suas súplicas, persuade ao arrependimento todos os que um dia haverão de entrar na salvação. Que grande benefício confere a cada um!

3wonder that she likewise ministers to Repentance, (accustomed as Repentance is to come to the rescue of such as have fallen,) when, on a disjunction of wedlock (for that cause, I mean, which makes it lawful, whether for husband or wife, to persist in the perpetual observance of widowhood), she waits for, she yearns for, she persuades by her entreaties, repentance in all who are one day to enter salvation? How great a blessing she confers on each!

4Impede que um se torne adúltero e corrige o outro. Assim também se encontra nos santos exemplos de paciência presentes nas parábolas do Senhor.

4The one she prevents from becoming an adulterer; the other she amends. So, to, she is found in those holy examples touching patience in the Lord's parables.

5A paciência do pastor procura e encontra a ovelha desgarrada: a Impaciência desprezaria facilmente uma só ovelha, mas a Paciência assume o trabalho da busca, e o paciente carregador leva para casa nos ombros o pecador abandonado. A paciência do pai também recebe, veste e alimenta o filho pródigo e o defende diante da impaciência do irmão irado. Aquele que estava perdido é, portanto, salvo porque entrou no caminho do arrependimento. O Arrependimento não perece porque encontra a Paciência que o acolhe. E por quais ensinamentos, senão os da Paciência, é instruída a Caridade, sacramento supremo da fé, tesouro do nome cristão, que o apóstolo recomenda com toda a força do Espírito Santo?

5The shepherd's patience seeks and finds the straying ewe: for Impatience would easily despise one ewe; but Patience undertakes the labour of the quest, and the patient burden-bearer carries home on his shoulders the forsaken sinner. That prodigal son also the father's patience receives, and clothes, and feeds, and makes excuses for, in the presence of the angry brother's impatience. He, therefore, who "had perished" is saved, because he entered on the way of repentance. Repentance perishes not, because it finds Patience (to welcome it). For by whose teachings but those of Patience is Charity--the highest sacrament of the faith, the treasure-house of the Christian name, which the apostle commends with the whole strength of the Holy Spirit--trained?

6'A caridade', diz ele, 'é paciente'; assim ela pratica a paciência. 'É benéfica': a Paciência não faz o mal. 'Não é invejosa': esse é, sem dúvida, traço próprio da paciência. 'Não age com violência': da paciência recebeu o domínio de si. 'Não se ensoberbece nem é violenta': isso não pertence à paciência. 'Nem busca os próprios interesses'

6"Charity," he says, "is long suffering;" thus she applies patience: "is beneficent;" Patience does no evil: "is not emulous;" that certainly is a peculiar mark of patience: "savours not of violence:" she has drawn her self-restraint from patience: "is not puffed up; is not violent;" for that pertains not unto patience: "nor does she seek her own"

7se oferece o que é seu para beneficiar o próximo. 'Nem se irrita': se o fizesse, o que restaria para a Impaciência? Por isso, ele diz: 'A caridade tudo suporta, tudo tolera', certamente porque é paciente. Com justiça, portanto, 'jamais desaparecerá', pois todas as outras coisas serão canceladas, terão seu fim. 'As línguas, os conhecimentos, as profecias se esgotam; a fé, a esperança e a caridade permanecem': a fé, introduzida pela paciência de Cristo; a esperança, aguardada pela paciência do homem; e a caridade, acompanhada pela Paciência, tendo Deus por Mestre.

7if, she offers her own, provided she may benefit her neighbours: "nor is irritable;" if she were, what would she have left to Impatience? Accordingly he says, "Charity endures all things; tolerates all things;" of course because she is patient. Justly, then, "will she never fail;" for all other things will be cancelled, will have their consummation. "Tongues, sciences, prophecies, become exhausted; faith, hope, charity, are permanent:" Faith, which Christ's patience introduced; hope, which man's patience waits for; charity, which Patience accompanies, with God as Master.
