1O MEN, why do ye vainly think on things

2Altas demais, como se fôsseis imortais?

2Too lofty, as if ye immortal were?

3E governais apenas por breve tempo,

3And ye are ruling but a little time,

4E desejais reinar sobre todos os mortais,

4And over mortals all desire to reign,

5Sem entender que o próprio Deus odeia

5Not understanding that God himself hates

6A sede de poder e, acima de tudo, odeia

6The lust of rule, and most of all things hates

7Reis insaciáveis, temíveis em sua maldade,

7Insatiate kings fearful in wickedness,

8E sobre eles suscita a escuridão;

8And over them he stirs up what is dark;

9Por isso, em vez de boas obras e pensamentos justos,

9Wherefore, instead of good works and just thoughts,

10Escolheis todos para vossas vestes mantos de púrpura,

10Ye all choose for your garments purple robes,
