4And what is now, and what shall yet befall

5Ao mundo pela impiedade dos homens.

5The world through the impiety of men.

6Primeiramente agora Deus me impele a relatar

6First now God urges on me to relate

7Verdadeiramente como o mundo veio a existir.

7Truly how into being came the world.

8E tu, mortal prudente, faze saber com discernimento,

8And thou, shrewd mortal, prudently make known,

9Para que jamais negligencies os meus mandamentos,

9Lest ever thou should'st my commands neglect,

10O Rei Altíssimo, que trouxe à existência

10The King most high, who brought into existence

11O mundo inteiro, dizendo: "Haja", e houve.

11The whole world, saying, "Let there be," and there was.

12Pois Ele estabeleceu a terra, pondo-a

12For he the earth established, placing it

13Ao redor do Tártaro, e Ele mesmo

13Round about Tartarus, and he himself

14Deu a doce luz; levantou o céu nas alturas,

14Gave the sweet light; he raised the heaven on high,

15Estendeu o mar resplandecente, e coroou o firmamento

15Spread out the gleaming sea, and crowned the sky

16Com uma abundância de estrelas resplandecentes,

16With an abundance of bright-shining stars,

17E adornou a terra com plantas, e misturou o mar

17And decked the earth with plants, and mingled sea

18Com rios, e o ar com zéfiros mesclou

18With rivers, and the air with zephyrs mixed

19E nuvens chuvosas; e depois, outra estirpe

19And watery clouds; and then, another race

20Designando, deu Ele peixes aos mares

20Appointing, he gave fishes to the seas

21E aves aos ventos, e aos bosques

21And birds unto the winds, and to the woods

22As feras de pelagem espessa, e serpentes que rastejam,

22The beasts of shaggy neck, and snakes that crawl,

23E todas as coisas que agora sobre a terra aparecem.

23And all things which now on the earth appear.

24Estas coisas por sua palavra Ele fez, e tudo

24These by his word he made, and every thing

25Com presteza e precisão foi executado;

25Was speedily and with precision done;

26Pois Ele é incausado e desde o céu olhou para baixo,

26For he was self-caused and from heaven looked down

27E consumado foi o mundo sobremaneira bem.

27And finished was the world exceeding well.

28E logo depois formou Ele novamente

28And then thereafter fashioned he again

29Uma criatura viva, modelando um novo homem

29A living product, copying a new man

30À sua própria imagem, formoso e divino,

30From his own image, beautiful, divine,

31E ordenou-lhe que habitasse em jardim aprazível,

31And bade him in ambrosial garden dwell,

32Para que nobres labores fossem o seu cuidado.

32That labors beautiful might be his care.

33Mas naquele fértil campo do Paraíso

33But in that fertile field of Paradise

34Ele anelava por companhia, estando só,

34He longed for conversation, being alone,

35E rogou que pudesse contemplar outra forma

35And prayed that he might see another form

36Semelhante à que possuía. E logo, do lado do homem

36Such as he had. And forthwith, from man's side

37Tomando uma costela, o próprio Deus fez a formosa Eva,

37Taking a bone, God himself made fair Eve,

38Uma esposa desposada, e naquele Paraíso

38A wedded spouse, and in that Paradise

39A deu para com ele habitar. E, quando ele fitou

39Gave her to dwell with him. And, when he gazed

40Os olhos nela, subitamente cheio de regozijo,

40Upon her, on a sudden filled with joy

41Grande admiração possuiu a sua alma, pois viu

41Great admiration held his soul, he saw

42Uma semelhança tão exata; e com sábias palavras

42A pattern so exact; and with wise words

43Que fluíam espontâneas, respondeu ele por sua vez,

43Spontaneous flowing answered he in turn

44Pois Deus cuidava de tudo. Pois o entendimento

44For God had care for all things. For the mind

45Eles não obscureciam com paixão, nem ocultavam

45They darkened not with passion, nor concealed

46A sua nudez, mas com corações distantes do mal

46Their nakedness, but with hearts far from evil

47Como animais selvagens andavam com os membros expostos.

47Even like wild beasts they walked with limbs exposed.

48E depois, transmitindo-lhes mandamentos,

48And afterwards delivering them commands

49Deus lhes indicou que não tocassem em certa árvore;

49God showed them not to touch a certain tree;

50Mas a temível serpente os seduziu por astúcia

50But the dread serpent drew them off by guile

51A caminharem para a sentença da morte

51To go away unto the fate of death

52E a alcançarem o conhecimento do bem e do mal.

52And to gain knowledge of both good and evil.

53Mas a mulher mostrou-se a primeira traidora contra Deus;

53But the wife then first traitress proved to God;

54Ela deu, e incitou o homem ignorante a pecar.

54She gave, and urged the unknowing man to sin.

55E ele, persuadido pelas palavras da mulher,

55And he, persuaded by the woman's words,

56Esqueceu de todo o Criador imortal,

56Forgot the immortal Maker utterly,

57E tratou com desprezo mandamentos claros.

57And treated plain commandments with neglect.

58Portanto, em lugar do bem, receberam o mal

58Therefore, instead of good, received they evil

59Segundo a sua obra. E então as folhas

59According to their deed. And then the leaves

60Of the sweet fig-tree piercing they made clothes

61And put them on each other, and concealed

62The sexual parts, because they were ashamed.

63But on them the Immortal set his wrath

72Increase, work constantly upon the earth,

73Para que, com o suor do trabalho, tenhais

73That with the sweat of labor ye may have

75The author of deceit to press the ground

76Sobre o ventre e sobre o flanco, serpente rastejante,

76On belly and on side, a crawling snake,

78Terrível inimizade entre eles, e aquele

78Dire enmity between them and the one

79Fica à espreita para guardar a sua cabeça,

79Is on the look-out to preserve his head,

80Mas o homem o seu calcanhar; pois a morte é vizinha próxima

80But man his heel; for death is neighbor near

81Das víboras conspiradoras do mal e dos homens.

81Of evil-plotting vipers and of men.

82E então, em verdade, a linhagem se multiplicou

82And then indeed the race was multiplied

83Conforme o Todo-Poderoso mesmo ordenara,

83As the Almighty himself gave command,

84E levantou-se povo após povo,

84And there grew up one people on another

85Inumeráveis. E adornaram casas

85Innumerable. And houses they adorned

86De todas as espécies, e construíram cidades e seus muros

86Of all kinds and made cities and their walls

87Com perícia e destreza; e foi-lhes concedido

87Well and expertly; and to them was given

88Um tempo de longos dias para uma vida mui amada;

88A day of long time for a life much-loved;

89Pois não morriam consumidos de aflições,

89For they did not worn out with troubles die,

90Mas como que vencidos pelo sono; homens mui felizes,

90But as subdued by sleep; most happy men

91De grande coração, a quem o Salvador imortal amou,

91Of great heart, whom the immortal Saviour loved,

92O Rei, Deus. Todavia eles também transgrediram,

92The King, God. But they also did transgress,

93Feridos de insensatez. Pois com desfaçatez

93Smitten with folly. For with impudence

94Escarneceram de seus pais e desprezaram suas mães;

94They mocked their fathers and their mothers scorned;

95Não reconheciam parentes, e urdiram tramas

95Kinsmen they knew not, and they formed intrigues

96Contra os seus próprios irmãos. E tornaram-se impuros,

96Against their brothers. And they were impure,

97Tendo-se contaminado com sangue humano,

97Having defiled themselves with human gore,

98E suscitaram guerras. E então sobre eles veio

98And they made wars. And then upon them came

99A calamidade derradeira enviada do céu,

99The last calamity sent forth from heaven,

100A qual arrebatou da vida aqueles homens terríveis;

100Which snatched the dreadful men away from life;

101E o Hades então os recebeu; e chamou-se

101And Hades then received them; it was called

102Hades visto que Adão, tendo provado a morte,

102Hades since Adam, having tasted death,

103Foi o primeiro a ir, e a terra o cercou ao redor.

103Went first and earth encompassed him around.

104E por isso todos os homens nascidos sobre a terra

104And therefore all men born upon the earth

105São chamados a descer às moradas do Hades.

110God formed another very subtile race

111Que se dedicava a formosas obras e nobres fadigas,

111That cared for lovely works, and noble toils,

112À distinta reverência e à sólida sabedoria;

112Distinguished reverence and solid wisdom;

113E foram instruídos em artes de toda sorte,

113And they were trained in arts of every kind,

114Encontrando invenções pela escassez de recursos.

114Finding inventions by their lack of means.

115E um ideou lavrar a terra com arados,

115And one devised to till the land with plows,

116Outro trabalhava em madeira, outro cuidava

116Another worked in wood, another cared

117Da navegação, e outro perscrutava as estrelas

117For sailing, and another watched the stars

118E praticava agouros pelas aves aladas;

118And practiced augury with winged fowls;

119E o emprego de ervas e remédios interessava a um,

119And use of drugs had interest for one,

120Enquanto a outro a magia seduzia;

120While for another magic had a charm;

121E outros em toda sorte de outras artes

121And others were in every other art

122A que os homens se aplicam foram instruídos, vigilantes,

122Which men care for instructed, wide awake,

123Industriosos, dignos daquele epônimo,

123Industrious, worthy of that eponym

124Porque tinham dentro de si um espírito infatigável

124Because they had a sleepless mind within

125E um corpo gigantesco; robustos e de porte poderoso

125And a huge body; stout with mighty form

132And terrible, who wrought among themselves

133Many an evil. And fights, homicides,

134And battles did continually destroy

135Aqueles homens possuidores de coração arrogante;

135Those men possessed of overweening heart,

136And from these afterward another race

137Procedeu, tardiamente gerada, a mais novel,

137Proceeded, late-completed, youngest born,

138Manchada de sangue, perversa em conselhos; destes homens

138Blood-stained, perverse in counsel; of men these

139Consistia a quarta raça; muito sangue derramaram,

139Were in the fourth race; much the blood they spilled,

140Nem temiam a Deus, nem respeitavam os homens,

140Nor feared they God nor had regard for men,

141For maddening wrath and sore impiety

157From heaven thus spoke: "Noah, be of good cheer

158Em ti mesmo, e a todo o povo prega

158In thyself and to all the people preach

159O arrependimento, a fim de que todos sejam salvos.

159Repentance, so that they may all be saved.

160Porém se, com alma desavergonhada, não me ouvirem,

160But if, with shameless soul, they heed me not

161Toda a geração destruirei inteiramente

161The whole race I will utterly destroy

162Com caudalosos dilúvios de águas. Depressa agora

162With mighty floods of waters. Quickly now

163Ordeno-te que construas uma casa incorruptível

163An undecaying house I bid thee frame

164De tábuas fortes e impérveas às águas.

164Of planks strong and impervious to the wet.

165Porei entendimento no teu coração,

165I will put understanding in thy heart,

190Who bade me warn you, that ye perish not.

191Sede sóbrios, apartai a maldade, não pelejeis

191Be sober, cut off badness, do not fight

192À força uns contra os outros com coração homicida,

192Perforce each other with blood-guilty heart,

193Nem regueis tanta terra com sangue humano.

193Nor irrigate much land with human gore.

194Reverenciai, ó mortais, o supremamente grande

194Revere, O mortals, the supremely great

210Fretful and evil lawlessly shall ye

213But when they heard him each turned up his nose,

214Chamando-o louco, homem ferido de delírio.

214Calling him mad, a frenzy-smitten man.

216"Ó homens sobremaneira míseros, vis de coração,

216"O men exceeding wretched, base in heart,

217Unstable, leaving modesty behind

218E amando a desfaçatez, senhores rapaces,

218And loving shamelessness, rapacious lords,

222The wrath of God most high not fearing, kept

224De modo algum pranteais, homens duros, mas rides;

224In no way do ye wail, harsh men, but laugh;

225Riso sardônico haveis de rir, quando sobrevier

225Sardonic smile shall ye laugh, when shall come

226Aquilo que falo — o terrível dilúvio iminente de Deus,

226That which I speak--God's dire incoming flood,

227Quando a raça contaminada de Eva, na grande terra

227When Eve's polluted race, in the great earth

228Florescendo perene em caule endurecido,

228Blooming perennial in impervious stem,

229Desaparecerá numa só noite, raiz e ramos,

229Shall, root and branch, in one night disappear,

230E cidades, homens e tudo o mais, o Abalador da terra

230And cities, men and all, shall the Earth-shaker

231Desde os abismos dispersará e os seus muros destruirá.

231From the depths scatter and their walls destroy.

232E então o mundo inteiro de inumeráveis homens

232And then the whole world of unnumbered men

233Perecerá. Mas como hei de eu chorar, como lamentar

233Shall die. But how shall I weep, how lament

234Na casa de madeira, como misturar lágrimas com as ondas?

234In wooden house, how mingle tears with waves?

235Porque, se estas águas ordenadas por Deus vierem,

235For, if this water bidden of God shall come,

236A terra flutuará, os montes flutuarão, e até o céu flutuará;

236Earth shall float, hills float, and even sky shall float;

237Tudo será água, e todas as coisas

237Everything shall be water, and all things

238Serão destruídas pelas águas. E os ventos

238Shall be destroyed by waters. And the winds

239Cessarão, e uma segunda era virá.

239Shall stand still, and a second age shall come.

240Ó Frígia, tu dentre as cristas das águas

240O Phrygia, thou shalt from the water's crest

241Primeiro te erguerás, e tu primeiro outra estirpe

241First rise up, and thou first another race

242De homens sustentarás, mais uma vez de novo

242Of men shalt nourish, once again anew

264About the lid, and in its polished place

265Foi cerrado de lado, então se cumpriu

265Was fitted sideways, then was brought to pass

266Prontamente o desígnio do Deus dos céus.

266Forthwith the purpose of the God of heaven.

267E Ele ajuntou nuvens, e ordenou ao brilhante disco solar,

267And he massed clouds, and bid the sun's bright disk,

268À lua, às estrelas e ao círculo dos céus,

268And moon, and stars, and circle of the heaven,

269Escurecendo tudo ao redor; trovejou com estrondo,

269Obscuring all things round; he thundered loud,

270Terror dos mortais, despedindo relâmpagos;

270Terror of mortals, sending lightnings forth;

271E todos os ventos juntos se suscitaram,

271And all the winds together were aroused,

272E todas as fontes das águas se romperam

272And all the veins of water were unloosed

273Pela abertura das grandes cataratas do céu,

273By opening of great cataracts from heaven,

274E das cavernas da terra e do abismo infatigável

274And from earth's caverns and the tireless deep

275Surgiram as miríades de águas, e toda

275Appeared the myriad waters, and the whole

281While the loud-babbling waters dashed around.

282E quando Deus inundou todo o mundo com chuvas,

283Então também Noé cogitou em observar,

283Then also Noah took thought to observe

284Pelos conselhos do Imortal; pois ele agora

284By counsels of the Immortal; for he now

285Já tivera o bastante das águas do mar. E logo

285Had had enough of Nereus. And straightway

286A casa ele abriu na parede lavrada,

286The house he opened from the polished wall,

291Fear possessed and shook mightily his heart.

341As eighth, most just of men, when on the waters

342Completara quarenta e um dias inteiros,

342He had made full twice twenty days and one

343Por causa dos conselhos do Deus poderoso.

343Because of counsels of the mighty God.

344Então uma nova linhagem de vida outra vez surgiu,

344Then a new stock of life again arose,

345Áurea a princípio, que na verdade foi a sexta e melhor,

345Golden first, which indeed was sixth, and best,

346Desde o tempo em que o homem primeiro formado surgiu;

346From the time when the first-formed man appeared;

355On the fig-tree a many-colored flower,

356E depois o poder real e o domínio

356And afterward the royal power and sway

357Terá Cronos. Pois três reis de grande alma,

357Shall Cronos have. For three kings of great soul,

358Homens mui justos, distribuirão então quinhões,

358Men most just, shall distribute portions then,

359E reinarão por muitos anos, fazendo o que é justo

359And many a year rule, rendering what is just

392By harbors and rough headlands round the land;

404Bearing his very image, and all things

405Ensinará. A Ele sacerdotes hão de trazer

405Shall he teach. Unto him shall priests convey

406E oferecer ouro, mirra e incenso;

406And offer gold, and myrrh, and frankincense;

407Porque todas estas coisas Ele também fará cumprir.

407For all these things he'll also bring to pass.

408Mas quando uma voz através da terra deserta

408But when a voice shall through the desert land

409Vier trazendo novas aos homens, e a todos

409Come bearing tidings to men, and to all

410Clamar que endireitem as veredas, e do coração

410Shall call to make straight paths, and from the heart

411Lancem fora a maldade e iluminem

411Cast wickedness out and illuminate

412Com água todos os corpos da humanidade,

412With water all the bodies of mankind,

413Para que, nascidos de novo, não mais

413That being born again they may no more

414Se desviem em nada daquilo que é justo —

414From what is righteous go at all astray--

415E um de mente bárbara, cativo por danças,

415And one of barbarous mind, by dances bound,

416Cortando aquela voz dará a recompensa —

416Cutting that (voice) off shall bestow reward--

417Então de repente haverá um sinal

417Then on a sudden there shall be a sign

422Together; for the God who rules on high

423Elas também conhecerão por meio dEle, e o caminho

423They also shall know through him, and the way

424Em luz comum. Pois aos homens eleitos

424In common light. For unto chosen men

425Mostrará a vida eterna, porém o fogo

425Will he show life eternal, but the fire

426Trará por eras sobre os transgressores.

426Will be for ages on the lawless bring.

427E então há de Ele curar os enfermos, e todos

427And then shall he the sickly heal, and all

428Os culpados que nEle confiarem.

428Who are blameworthy who shall trust in him..

429E então os cegos verão, os coxos andarão,

429And then the blind shall see, the lame shall walk,

430Os surdos ouvirão, e os mudos falarão.

430The deaf shall hearken, and the dumb shall speak.

431Expulsará demônios, e dentre os mortos

431Demons shall he drive out, and of the dead

432Haverá ressurreição; sobre as ondas

432There shall be an uprising; on the waves

433Andará; outrossim num lugar deserto

433Shall he walk; also in a desert place

434Saciará cinco mil com mantimento,

434Shall he five thousand satisfy with food

435De cinco pães e um peixe tirado do mar,

435From five loaves and a fish out of the sea,

436E com os pedaços que sobejarem, para esperança

436And with the remnants of them, for the hope

437Dos povos, encherá doze cestos repletos.

437Of peoples, shall he fill twelve baskets full.

438And then shall Israel, drunken, not discern,

440Mas quando o furor enlouquecedor do Altíssimo

440But when the maddening wrath of the Most High

441Vier sobre os hebreus, e lhes tirar a fé,

441Shall come upon the Hebrews, and take faith

442Porquanto mataram o Filho

442Away from them, because they slew the Son

443Do Deus celestial; então também com lábios impuros

443Of the heavenly God; then also with foul lips

444Israel lhe dará bofetadas e escarros amargos.

444Shall Israel give him cuffs and spittle drugged.

445E fel por mantimento e vinagre puro

445And gall for food and vinegar unmixed

446Por bebida hão de dar, com maligno furor feridos

446For drink will they, with evil madness smitten

447No peito e no coração, impiamente oferecendo,

447In bosom and in heart, give impiously,

448Não vendo com os seus olhos, mais cegos que toupeiras,

448Not seeing with their eyes, more blind than moles,

449Mais terríveis que peçonhentas feras rastejantes,

449More terrible than crawling poisonous beasts,

450Fast bound by heavy sleep. But when his hands

451He shall spread forth and measure out all things,

452And bear the crown of thorns, and they shall pierce

453His side with reeds, for which dark monstrous night

454Cobrirão a terra por três horas em pleno dia,

454Shall be for three hours in the midst of day,

455Então também o templo de Salomão

455Then also shall the temple of Solomon

456Dará cumprimento a um poderoso sinal para os homens,

456Bring to an end a mighty sign for men,

457Quando Ele for à morada do Hades

457When he shall to the house of Hades go

458Proclamando ressurreição aos mortos.

458Proclaiming resurrection to the dead.

459Porém quando ao terceiro dia ressurgir

459But when in three days he shall come again

460Para a luz, e mostrar a sua forma aos homens

460Unto the light, and show his form to men

461E tudo ensinar, ascendendo nas nuvens

461And teach all things, ascending in the clouds

462Para a morada do céu Ele irá,

462Unto the house of heaven shall he go

463Deixando ao mundo a aliança do Evangelho.

463Leaving the world a Gospel convenant.

464E em seu nome florescerá um novo renovo

464And in his name shall blossom a new shoot

465Dentre as nações que são guiadas pela lei

465From nations that are guided by the law

466Do Poderoso. Mas outrossim depois disto

466Of the Mighty One. But also after this

467Haverá sábios condutores, e logo a seguir

467There shall be wise guides, and then afterward

468Haverá a cessação dos profetas.

468There shall be a cessation of the prophets.

469Depois disso, quando o povo hebreu colher

469After that, when the Hebrew people reap

470A sua má colheita, um rei romano há de

470Their evil harvest, shall a Roman king

471Muito ouro e prata inteiramente destruir.

471Much gold and silver utterly destroy.

472E mais tarde outros poderes reais

472And afterward shall other royal powers

473Continuamente hão de surgir enquanto perecem reinos,

473Continuously arise as kingdoms perish,

474E oprimirão os mortais. Mas grande queda

474And they will oppress mortals. But great fall

475Haverá para aqueles homens, quando principiarem

475Shall be for those men, when they shall begin

476Sua arrogância iníqua. Mas quando o templo

476Unrighteous arrogance. But when the temple

477De Salomão na terra santa cair,

477Of Solomon in the holy land shall fall,

478Derrubado por homens bárbaros de couraças de bronze,

478Cast down by barbarous men in brazen mail,

479E da sua terra os hebreus forem expulsos,

479And from the land the Hebrews shall be driven

480Errantes e desolados, e entre o trigo

480Wandering and wasted, and among the wheat

481Misturarem muito joio, então haverá

481They shall much darnel mingle, there shall be

482Maligna contenda entre toda a humanidade;

482Evil contention among, all mankind;

483E as cidades que sofrerem ultraje prantearão

483And the cities suffering outrage shall bewail

484Umas às outras, acolhendo em seus peitos a ira

484Each other, in their breasts receiving wrath

485Do grande Deus, visto que praticaram obras más.

485Of the great God, since they wrought evil work.
