1Pois o que Deus, que exige a oração, já negou àquela que vem do espírito e da verdade? Que poderosos exemplos de sua eficácia lemos, ouvimos e cremos! A oração dos tempos antigos, de fato, costumava livrar do fogo, das feras e da fome; e, contudo, ainda não recebera de Cristo sua forma. Mas quão mais ampla é a ação da oração cristã! 1For what has God, who exacts it ever denied to prayer coming from "spirit and truth?" How mighty specimens of its efficacy do we read, and hear, and believe! Old-world prayer, indeed, used to free from fires, and from beasts, and from famine; and yet it had not (then) received its form from Christ. But how far more amply operative is Christian prayer! It does not station the angel of dew 691

2no meio do fogo, nem fecha a boca dos leões, nem leva aos famintos o pão dos camponeses; não possui graça delegada para afastar toda sensação de sofrimento, mas concede resistência àqueles que sofrem, sentem e lamentam: amplia a graça pela virtude, para que a fé saiba o que recebe do Senhor, compreendendo o que sofre por causa do nome de Deus. Nos tempos passados, além disso, a oração costumava atrair pragas, dispersar os exércitos inimigos e deter as chuvas benéficas. Agora, porém, a oração dos justos afasta toda a ira de Deus, monta guarda em favor dos inimigos pessoais e suplica pelos perseguidores. É de admirar que saiba obter as chuvas do céu, ela que antes podia conseguir seus fogos? Só a oração é capaz de vencer a Deus.

2in mid-fires, nor muzzle lions, nor transfer to the hungry the rustics' bread; it has no delegated grace to avert any sense of suffering; but it supplies the suffering, and the feeling, and the grieving, with endurance: it amplifies grace by virtue, that faith may know what she obtains from the Lord, understanding what--for God's name's sake--she suffers. But in days gone by, withal prayer used to call down plagues, scatter the armies of foes, withhold the wholesome influences of the showers. Now, however, the prayer of righteousness avers all God's anger, keeps bivouac on behalf of personal enemies, makes supplication on behalf of persecutors. Is it wonder if it knows how to extort the rains of heaven-- (prayer) which was ante able to procure its fires? Prayer is alone that which vanquishes God.

3Mas Cristo quis que ela não agisse para mal algum: conferiu-lhe toda a sua força para a causa do bem. Assim, ela só sabe chamar de volta as almas dos falecidos do próprio caminho da morte, transformar os fracos, restabelecer os enfermos, purificar os possessos, abrir as portas das prisões e soltar as correntes dos inocentes. Também lava as faltas, repele as tentações, extingue as perseguições, consola os abatidos, anima os corajosos, acompanha os viajantes, acalma as ondas, aterroriza os ladrões, alimenta os pobres, governa os ricos, levanta os caídos, detém os que estão caindo e fortalece os que permanecem de pé. A oração é a muralha da fé, suas armas e seus projéteis contra o inimigo que nos espreita por todos os lados. Por isso, nunca andemos desarmados. De dia, lembremo-nos da Estação; à noite, da vigília.

3But Christ has willed that it be operative for no evil: He had conferred on it all its virtue in the cause of good. And so it knows nothing save how to recall the souls of the departed from the very path of death, to transform the weak, to restore the sick, to purge the possessed, to open prison-bars, to loose the bonds of the innocent. Likewise it washes away faults, repels temptations, extinguishes persecutions, consoles the faint-spirited, cheers the high-spirited, escorts travellers, appeases waves, makes robbers stand aghast, nourishes the poor, governs the rich, upraises the fallen, arrests the falling, confirms the standing. Prayer is the wall of faith: her arms and missiles against the foe who keeps watch over us on all sides. And, so never walk we unarmed. By day, be we mindful of Station; by night, of vigil.

4Sob as armas da oração, guardemos o estandarte de nosso General; aguardemos em oração a trombeta do anjo. Também os anjos todos oram; toda criatura ora; o gado e os animais selvagens oram e dobram os joelhos; e, ao saírem de seus repousos e esconderijos, olham para o céu sem manter a boca ociosa, fazendo vibrar o fôlego a seu modo. Mais ainda, as aves, ao levantarem voo do ninho, erguem-se para o céu e, em vez de mãos, estendem a cruz de suas asas e emitem algo que parece oração. Que mais dizer, então, sobre o dever da oração? Até o próprio Senhor orou; a ele sejam a honra e o poder pelos séculos dos séculos!

4Under the arms of prayer guard we the standard of our General; await we in prayer the angel's trump. The angels, likewise, all pray; every creature prays; cattle and wild beasts pray and bend their knees; and when they issue from their layers and lairs, they look up heavenward with no idle mouth, making their breath vibrate after their own manner. Nay, the birds too, rising out of the nest, upraise themselves heavenward, and, instead of hands, expand the cross of their wings, and say somewhat to seem like prayer. What more then, touching the office of prayer? Even the Lord Himself prayed; to whom be honour and virtue unto the ages of the ages!
