Atas dos Mártires Escilitanos 1

1Sendo cônsules Presente, pela segunda vez, e Claudiano, no décimo sétimo dia de julho, em Cartago, foram conduzidos ao tribunal Esperato, Nárzalo, Citino, Donata, Segunda e Véstia.

1When Praesens, for the second time, and Claudianus were the consuls, on the seventeenth day of July, at Carthage, there were set in the judgment-hall Speratus, Nartzalus, Cittinus, Donata, Secunda and Vestia.

2Saturnino, o procônsul, disse: Podeis alcançar a indulgência de nosso senhor o Imperador, se retornardes a um são juízo.

2Saturninus the proconsul said: Ye can win the indulgence of our lord the Emperor, if ye return to a sound mind.

3Esperato disse: Jamais praticamos o mal, nem nos prestamos à injustiça, nunca falamos mal de ninguém, mas, sendo maltratados, demos graças; porque acatamos o nosso Imperador.

3Speratus said: We have never done ill, we have not lent ourselves to wrong, we have never spoken ill, but when ill-treated we have given thanks; because we pay heed to our Emperor.

4Saturnino, o procônsul, disse: Nós também somos religiosos, e a nossa religião é simples, e juramos pelo gênio de nosso senhor o Imperador, e rogamos pelo seu bem-estar, como vós também deveis fazer.

4Saturninus the proconsul said: We too are religious, and our religion is simple, and we swear by the genius of our lord the Emperor, and pray for his welfare, as ye also ought to do.

5Esperato disse: Se pacíficamente me emprestares os teus ouvidos, posso dizer-te o mistério da simplicidade.

5Speratus said: If thou wilt peaceably lend me thine ears, I can tell thee the mystery of simplicity.

6Saturnino disse: Não te emprestarei os meus ouvidos, quando começas a falar mal de nossos ritos sagrados; antes, jura tu pelo gênio de nosso senhor o Imperador.

6Saturninus said: I will not lend mine ears to thee, when thou beginnest to speak evil things of our sacred rites; but rather swear thou by the genius of our lord the Emperor.

7Esperato disse: O império deste mundo não conheço; antes, sirvo àquele Deus a quem nenhum homem viu, nem com estes olhos pode ver. Não cometi furto algum; mas se algo comprei, pago o tributo; porque conheço o meu Senhor, o Rei dos reis e Soberano de todas as nações.

7Speratus said: The empire of this world I know not; but rather I serve that God, whom no man hath seen, nor with these eyes can see. I have committed no theft; but if I have bought anything I pay the tax; because I know my Lord, the King of kings and Emperor of all nations.

8Saturnino, o procônsul, disse aos demais: Cessai de pertencer a esta persuasão.

8Saturninus the proconsul said to the rest: Cease to be of this persuasion.

9Esperato disse: Má persuasão é cometer homicídio e proferir falso testemunho.

9Speratus said: It is an ill persuasion to do murder, to speak false witness.

10Saturnino, o procônsul, disse: Não sejais participantes desta loucura.

10Saturninus the proconsul said: Be not partakers of this folly.

11Citino disse: Não temos a nenhum outro a quem temer, senão unicamente ao Senhor nosso Deus, que está nos céus.

11Cittinus said: We have none other to fear, save only our Lord God, who is in heaven.

12Donata disse: Honra a César como a César; mas temor a Deus.

12Donata said: Honour to Caesar as Caesar: but fear to God.

13Véstia disse: Eu sou cristã.

13Vestia said: I am a Christian.

14Segunda disse: O que sou, isso desejo ser.

14Secunda said: What I am, that I wish to be.

15Saturnino, o procônsul, disse a Esperato: Perseveras em ser cristão?

15Saturninus the proconsul said to Speratus: Dost thou persist in being a Christian?

16Esperato disse: Sou cristão. E com ele todos concordaram.

16Speratus said: I am a Christian. And with him they all agreed.

17Saturnino, o procônsul, disse: Quereis vós um prazo para refletir?

17Saturninus the proconsul said: Will ye have a space to consider?

18Esperato disse: Em assunto tão evidente não há o que deliberar.

18Speratus said: In a matter so straightforward there is no considering.

19Saturnino, o procônsul, disse: Que coisas estão em vosso cofre?

19Saturninus the proconsul said: What are the things in your chest?

20Esperato disse: Livros e as epístolas de Paulo, um homem justo.

20Speratus said: Books and epistles of Paul, a just man.

21Saturnino, o procônsul, disse: Tende um prazo de trinta dias e reconsiderai.

21Saturninus the proconsul said: Have a delay of thirty days and bethink yourselves.

22Esperato disse pela segunda vez: Sou cristão. E com ele todos concordaram.

22Speratus said a second time: I am a Christian. And with him they all agreed.

23Saturnino, o procônsul, leu o decreto da tabuinha: Havendo Esperato, Nárzalo, Citino, Donata, Véstia, Segunda e os demais confessado que vivem segundo o rito cristão, visto que, após lhes ser oferecida a oportunidade de regressar ao costume dos romanos, obstinadamente perseveraram, determina-se que sejam passados à espada.

23Saturninus the proconsul read out the decree from the tablet: Speratus, Nartzalus, Cittinus, Donata, Vestia, Secunda and the rest having confessed that they live according to the Christian rite, since after opportunity offered them of returning to the custom of the Romans they have obstinately persisted, it is determined that they be put to the sword.

24Esperato disse: Damos graças a Deus.

24Speratus said: We give thanks to God.

25Nárzalo disse: Hoje somos mártires nos céus; graças a Deus.

25Nartzalus said: To-day we are martyrs in heaven; thanks be to God.

26Saturnino, o procônsul, ordenou que fosse apregoado pelo arauto: Esperato, Nárzalo, Citino, Vetúrio, Félix, Aquilino, Letâncio, Januária, Generosa, Véstia, Donata e Segunda, ordenei que sejam executados.

26Saturninus the proconsul ordered it to be declared by the herald: Speratus, Nartzalus, Cittinus, Veturius, Felix, Aquilinus, Laetantius, Januaria, Generosa, Vestia, Donata and Secunda, I have ordered to be executed.

27Todos disseram: Graças a Deus.

27They all said: Thanks be to God.

28E assim todos juntos foram coroados com o martírio; e reinam com o Pai e o Filho e o Espírito Santo, pelos séculos dos séculos. Amém.

28And so they all together were crowned with martyrdom; and they reign with the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, for ever and ever. Amen.
