Judite 4

1E os filhos de Israel que habitavam na Judeia ouviram tudo o que Holofernes, general supremo de Nabucodonosor, rei dos assírios, tinha feito às nações, e como tinha saqueado todos os seus templos e os tinha destruído.

1Now the children of Israel, that dwelt in Judea, heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations, and after what manner he had spoiled all their temples, and brought them to nought.

2E temeram grandemente diante dele, e ficaram consternados por causa de Jerusalém e do templo do Senhor seu Deus.

2Therefore they were exceedingly afraid of him, and were troubled for Jerusalem, and for the temple of the Lord their God:

3Porque tinham voltado recentemente do cativeiro, e há pouco tempo todo o povo da Judeia se tinha reunido, e os utensílios, o altar e a casa tinham sido santificados depois da profanação.

3For they were newly returned from the captivity, and all the people of Judea were lately gathered together: and the vessels, and the altar, and the house, were sanctified after the profanation.

4E enviaram mensageiros a todo o território de Samaria, a Cona, a Bete-Horom, a Belmaim, a Jericó, a Coba, a Esora e ao vale de Salém.

4Therefore they sent into all the coasts of Samaria, and the villages and to Bethoron, and Belmen, and Jericho, and to Choba, and Esora, and to the valley of Salem:

5E ocuparam antes de tudo os cumes dos montes altos, fortificaram as aldeias que neles havia, e ajuntaram provisões para a guerra, porque os seus campos tinham sido ceifados havia pouco.

5And possessed themselves beforehand of all the tops of the high mountains, and fortified the villages that were in them, and laid up victuals for the provision of war: for their fields were of late reaped.

6E Joaquim, que era naqueles dias sumo sacerdote em Jerusalém, escreveu aos habitantes de Betúlia e de Betomestém, que está defronte de Esdrelom, junto à planície de Dotaim.

6Also Joacim the high priest, which was in those days in Jerusalem, wrote to them that dwelt in Bethulia, and Betomestham, which is over against Esdraelon toward the open country, near to Dothaim,

7Para que ocupassem as subidas da montanha, porque por elas era a entrada para a Judeia, e era fácil deter os que subissem, pois o caminho era estreito, apenas para dois homens.

7Charging them to keep the passages of the hill country: for by them there was an entrance into Judea, and it was easy to stop them that would come up, because the passage was straight, for two men at the most.

8E os filhos de Israel fizeram como lhes tinha ordenado Joaquim, sumo sacerdote, e o conselho de todo o povo de Israel, que estava em Jerusalém.

8And the children of Israel did as Joacim the high priest had commanded them, with the ancients of all the people of Israel, which dwelt at Jerusalem.

9E todo o homem de Israel clamou a Deus com grande fervor, e humilharam as suas almas com grande fervor.

9Then every man of Israel cried to God with great fervency, and with great vehemency did they humble their souls:

10Eles, as suas mulheres, os seus filhos, o seu gado, todo o estrangeiro, mercenário e servo comprado puseram sacos sobre os seus lombos.

10Both they, and their wives and their children, and their cattle, and every stranger and hireling, and their servants bought with money, put sackcloth upon their loins.

11E todo o homem e mulher de Israel, e os seus filhos, os que habitavam em Jerusalém, prostraram-se diante do templo, e cobriram as suas cabeças de cinza, e estenderam os seus sacos diante do Senhor.

11Thus every man and women, and the little children, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, fell before the temple, and cast ashes upon their heads, and spread out their sackcloth before the face of the Lord: also they put sackcloth about the altar,

12E cobriram o altar de saco, e clamaram unanimemente ao Deus de Israel com instância, para que não entregasse os seus filhos ao saque, as suas mulheres ao despojo, as cidades da sua herança à destruição, e o santuário à profanação e opróbrio, para alegria dos gentios.

12And cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly, that he would not give their children for a prey, and their wives for a spoil, and the cities of their inheritance to destruction, and the sanctuary to profanation and reproach, and for the nations to rejoice at.

13E o Senhor ouviu a sua voz, e viu a sua aflição; e o povo jejuou muitos dias em toda a Judeia e em Jerusalém diante do santuário do Senhor Todo-Poderoso.

13So God heard their prayers, and looked upon their afflictions: for the people fasted many days in all Judea and Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty.

14E Joaquim, o sumo sacerdote, e todos os sacerdotes que estavam diante do Senhor e serviam ao Senhor, com sacos cingidos sobre os seus lombos, ofereciam o holocausto perpétuo, os votos e as ofertas voluntárias do povo.

14And Joacim the high priest, and all the priests that stood before the Lord, and they which ministered unto the Lord, had their loins girt with sackcloth, and offered the daily burnt offerings, with the vows and free gifts of the people,

15E tinham cinza sobre as suas mitras, e clamavam ao Senhor com tôdas as suas forças, para que visitasse para bem toda a casa de Israel.

15And had ashes on their mitres, and cried unto the Lord with all their power, that he would look upon all the house of Israel graciously.
