1Capítulo 10 — A realidade da paixão de Cristo.

1Chapter 10 — The reality of Christ's passion.

2Mas se, como alguns que estão sem Deus, isto é, os incrédulos, dizem que Ele apenas parecia sofrer (eles mesmos apenas pareciam existir), então por que estou preso? Por que anseio ser exposto às feras? Portanto, morro em vão? Não sou então culpado de falsidade contra a cruz do Senhor? Mas se, como alguns que estão sem Deus, isto é, os incrédulos, dizem que Ele se tornou homem apenas na aparência, que na realidade não tomou para si um corpo, que morreu apenas na aparência e não sofreu de fato, então por que motivo estou agora preso e anseio por ser exposto às feras? Nesse caso, morro em vão e sou culpado de falsidade contra a cruz do Senhor.

2But if, as some that are without God, that is, the unbelieving, say, that He only seemed to suffer (they themselves only seeming to exist), then why am I in bonds? Why do I long to be exposed to the wild beasts? Do I therefore die in vain? Am I not then guilty of falsehood against the cross of the Lord? But if, as some that are without God, that is, the unbelieving, say, He became man in appearance only, that He did not in reality take unto Him a body, that He died in appearance merely, and did not in very deed suffer, then for what reason am I now in bonds, and long to be exposed to the wild beasts? In such a case, I die in vain, and am guilty of falsehood against the cross of the Lord.

3Então também o profeta declara em vão: “Olharão para Aquele a quem traspassaram e lamentarão sobre si mesmos como por um amado”.

3Then also does the prophet in vain declare, "They shall look on Him whom they have pierced, and mourn over themselves as over one beloved".

4Esses homens, portanto, não são menos incrédulos do que aqueles que O crucificaram.

4These men, therefore, are not less unbelievers than were those that crucified Him.

5Mas quanto a mim, não coloco as minhas esperanças naquele que morreu por mim na aparência, mas na realidade.

5But as for me, I do not place my hopes in one who died for me in appearance, but in reality.

6Pois aquilo que é falso é bastante abominável para a verdade.

6For that which is false is quite abhorrent to the truth.

7Maria então realmente concebeu um corpo no qual Deus o habitava.

7Mary then did truly conceive a body which had God inhabiting it.

8E Deus, o Verbo, nasceu verdadeiramente da Virgem, tendo-se revestido de um corpo de paixões semelhantes às nossas.

8And God the Word was truly born of the Virgin, having clothed Himself with a body of like passions with our own.

9Aquele que forma todos os homens no ventre, estava realmente no ventre e fez para si um corpo da semente da Virgem, mas sem qualquer relação humana.

9He who forms all men in the womb, was Himself really in the womb, and made for Himself a body of the seed of the Virgin, but without any intercourse of man.

10Ele foi carregado no ventre, assim como nós, pelo período habitual de tempo; e realmente nasceu, como nós também nascemos; e na realidade foi nutrido com leite e comeu carne e bebida comuns, assim como nós.

10He was carried in the womb, even as we are, for the usual period of time; and was really born, as we also are; and was in reality nourished with milk, and partook of common meat and drink, even as we do.

11E quando já viveu trinta anos entre os homens, foi batizado por João, realmente e não em aparência; e quando Ele pregou o Evangelho por três anos e fez sinais e maravilhas, Aquele que era o Juiz foi julgado pelos judeus, falsamente chamados, e por Pilatos, o governador; foi açoitado, foi ferido na bochecha, foi cuspido; Ele usava uma coroa de espinhos e um manto roxo; Ele foi condenado: foi crucificado na realidade, e não na aparência, não na imaginação, não no engano.

11And when He had lived among men for thirty years, He was baptized by John, really and not in appearance; and when He had preached the Gospel three years, and done signs and wonders, He who was Himself the Judge was judged by the Jews, falsely so called, and by Pilate the governor; was scourged, was smitten on the cheek, was spit upon; He wore a crown of thorns and a purple robe; He was condemned: He was crucified in reality, and not in appearance, not in imagination, not in deceit.

12Ele realmente morreu, foi sepultado e ressuscitou dos mortos, enquanto orava em determinado lugar, dizendo: “Mas tu, ó Senhor, ressuscita-me novamente, e eu os recompensarei”.

12He really died, and was buried, and rose from the dead, even as He prayed in a certain place, saying, "But do Thou, O Lord, raise me up again, and I shall recompense them".

13E o Pai, que sempre O ouve, respondeu e disse: “Levanta-te, ó Deus, e julga a terra; porque receberás todos os gentios por tua herança”.

13And the Father, who always hears Him, answered and said, "Arise, O God, and judge the earth; for Thou shall receive all the heathen for Thine inheritance".

14O Pai, portanto, que o ressuscitou, também nos ressuscitará por meio dele, sem o qual ninguém alcançará a verdadeira vida.

14The Father, therefore, who raised Him up, will also raise us up through Him, apart from whom no one will attain to true life.

15Pois diz Ele: “Eu sou a vida; quem crê em mim, ainda que morra, viverá; e todo aquele que vive e crê em mim, ainda que morra, viverá para sempre”.

15For says He, "I am the life; he that believeth in me, even though he die, shall live: and every one that liveth and believeth in me, even though he die, shall live for ever".

16Portanto, fujam dessas heresias ímpias; pois são invenções do diabo, aquela serpente que foi o autor do mal, e que por meio da mulher enganou Adão, o pai de nossa raça.

16Do ye therefore flee from these ungodly heresies; for they are the inventions of the devil, that serpent who was the author of evil, and who by means of the woman deceived Adam, the father of our race.
