1Quanto às epístolas de Paulo, novamente, àqueles que quiserem compreender a matéria, indicam elas por si mesmas o que são, e de que lugar ou com que propósito foram dirigidas.

1As to the epistles of Paul, again, to those who will understand the matter, they indicate of themselves what they are, and from what place or with what object they were directed.

2Escreveu em primeiro lugar, e mui amplamente, aos Coríntios, para coibir o cisma da heresia; depois aos Gálatas, para proibir a circuncisão; e então aos Romanos, sobre a ordem das Escrituras do Antigo Testamento, mostrando-lhes também que Cristo é o primeiro objeto nestas; sobre as quais coisas nos é necessário discorrer individualmente.

2He wrote first of all, and at considerable length, to the Corinthians, to check the schism of heresy; and then to the Galatians, to forbid circumcision; and then to the Romans on the rule of the Old Testament Scriptures, and also to show them that Christ is the first object in these; which it is needful for us to discuss severally.

3Visto que o bendito apóstolo Paulo, seguindo a regra do seu predecessor João, escreve nominativamente a não mais de sete igrejas, nesta ordem: a primeira aos Coríntios, a segunda aos Efésios, a terceira aos Filipenses, a quarta aos Colossenses, a quinta aos Gálatas, a sexta aos Tessalonicenses, a sétima aos Romanos.

3As the blessed Apostle Paul, following the rule of his predecessor John, writes to no more than seven churches by name, in this order: the first to the Corinthians, the second to the Ephesians, the third to the Philippians, the fourth to the Colossians, the fifth to the Galatians, the sixth to the Thessalonians, the seventh to the Romans.

4Contudo, embora escreva duas vezes aos Coríntios e aos Tessalonicenses para a sua correção, demonstra-se todavia — a saber, por esse setenário de escritos — que há uma só Igreja difundida por todo o mundo; e João também, com efeito, no Apocalipse, embora escreva a apenas sete igrejas, todavia se dirige a todas.

4Moreover, though he writes twice to the Corinthians and Thessalonians for their correction, it is yet shown—that is, by this sevenfold writing—that there is one Church spread abroad through the whole world; and John too, indeed, in the Apocalypse, although he writes only to seven churches, yet addresses all.

5Escreveu, além dessas, uma a Filemom, uma a Tito e duas a Timóteo, por simples afeto e amor pessoal, na verdade; contudo, estas são tidas por sagradas na estima da Igreja Católica e na regulação da disciplina eclesiástica.

5He wrote, besides these, one to Philemon, and one to Titus, and two to Timothy, in simple personal affection and love indeed; but yet these are hallowed in the esteem of the Catholic Church, and in the regulation of ecclesiastical discipline.

6Circulam também uma aos Laodicenses e outra aos Alexandrinos, forjadas sob o nome de Paulo para favorecer a heresia de Marcião; e há ainda várias outras que não podem ser acolhidas na Igreja Católica, pois não convém misturar o fel com o mel.

6There are also in circulation one to the Laodiceans, and another to the Alexandrians, forged under the name of Paul, and addressed against the heresy of Marcion; and there are also several others which cannot be received into the Catholic Church, for it is not suitable for gall to be mingled with honey.
