2O terceiro livro do Evangelho, aquele segundo Lucas, o conhecido médico Lucas o escreveu em seu próprio nome, por ordem, após a ascensão de Cristo, havendo Paulo o associado a si como homem afeiçoado ao direito.

2The third book of the Gospel, that according to Luke, the well-known physician Luke wrote in his own name in order after the ascension of Christ, and when Paul had associated him with himself as one studious of right.

3Nem ele mesmo viu o Senhor na carne; e ele, conforme foi capaz de alcançá-lo, iniciou sua narrativa a partir do nascimento de João.

3Nor did he himself see the Lord in the flesh; and he, according as he was able to accomplish it, began his narrative with the nativity of John.

4O quarto Evangelho é o de João, um dos discípulos; tendo sido exortado pelos seus condiscípulos e bispos, disse: 'Jejuai comigo durante o espaço de três dias, e contemos uns aos outros tudo quanto a cada um for revelado.'

4The fourth Gospel is that of John, one of the disciples; when his fellow-disciples and bishops entreated him, he said, 'Fast ye now with me for the space of three days, and let us recount to each other whatever may be revealed to each of us.'

5Naquela mesma noite foi revelado a André, um dos apóstolos, que João deveria narrar todas as coisas em seu próprio nome, à medida que todos as trouxessem à memória.

5On the same night it was revealed to Andrew, one of the apostles, that John should narrate all things in his own name as they called them to mind.

6E por isso, embora diferentes matérias nos sejam ensinadas nos diversos livros dos Evangelhos, não há divergência no tocante à fé dos crentes, uma vez que em todos eles tudo é declarado sob um único e soberano Espírito, concernente à natividade do Senhor, à Sua paixão, à Sua ressurreição, ao Seu convívio com os discípulos e ao Seu duplo advento: o primeiro na humilhação da rejeição, que já transcorreu, e o segundo na glória do poder real, que ainda há de vir.

6And hence, although different points are taught us in the several books of the Gospels, there is no difference as regards the faith of believers, inasmuch as in all of them all things are related under one imperial Spirit, which concern the Lord's nativity, His passion, His resurrection, His conversation with His disciples, and His twofold advent,—the first in the humiliation of rejection, which is now past, and the second in the glory of royal power, which is yet in the future.

7Que prodígio há, pois, em que João apresente essas singulares coisas com tanta constância também em suas epístolas, afirmando em sua própria pessoa: 'O que vimos com os nossos olhos, e ouvimos com os nossos ouvidos, e as nossas mãos apalparam, isso vos escrevemos'?

7What marvel is it, then, that John brings forward these several things so constantly in his epistles also, saying in his own person, 'What we have seen with our eyes, and heard with our ears, and our hands have handled, that have we written'?

8Porque assim ele se declara não somente testemunha ocular, mas também ouvinte; e, além disso, historiador de todos os fatos admiráveis acerca do Senhor, em sua devida ordem.

8For thus he professes himself to be not only the eye-witness, but also the hearer; and besides that, the historian of all the wondrous facts concerning the Lord in their order.
