Doutrina de Addai 1

1A carta do rei Abgar, filho do rei Ma'nu, e quando ele a enviou a nosso Senhor em Jerusalém; e quando o apóstolo Addai veio a ele (Abgar) em Edessa; e o que disse no evangelho de sua pregação; e o que disse e ordenou, ao partir deste mundo, àqueles que dele haviam recebido a imposição das mãos do sacerdócio.

1THE letter of king Abgar, the son of king Ma'nu, and at what time he sent it to our Lord at Jerusalem; and at what time Addai the Apostle came to him (Abgar) at Edessa; and what he spake in the gospel of his preaching; and what he said and commanded, when he went forth from, this world, to those who had received from him the hand of the priesthood.

2No trecentésimo quadragésimo terceiro ano do reino dos gregos, no reinado de nosso senhor Tibério, imperador romano, e no reinado do rei Abgar, filho do rei Ma'nu, no mês de outubro, no décimo segundo dia, Abgar Ukkama enviou Marihab e Shamshagram, chefes e pessoas honradas de seu reino, e com eles Hannan, o tabulário, o sharrir, à cidade chamada Eleuterópolis, mas em aramaico Beth-gubrin, ao honrado Sabino, filho de Eustórgio, representante de nosso senhor, o imperador, que governava a Síria, a Fenícia, a Palestina e toda a região da Mesopotâmia.

2In the three hundred and forty and third year of the kingdom of the Greeks, and in the reign of our lord Tiberius, the Roman Emperor, and in the reign of king Abgar, son of king Ma'nu, in the month of October, on the twelfth day, Abgar Ukkama sent Marihab and Shamshagram, chiefs and honoured persons of his kingdom, and Hannan the tabularius, the sharrir, with them, to the city which is called Eleutheropolis, but in Aramaic Beth-gubrin, to the honoured Sabinus, the son of Eustorgius, the deputy of our lord the emperor, who ruled over Syria, Phoenicia, Palestine, and the whole country of Mesopotamia.

3Levaram-lhe cartas sobre os assuntos do reino; e, quando chegaram à sua presença, ele os recebeu com alegria e honra, e permaneceram com ele vinte e cinco dias. Escreveu-lhes uma resposta às cartas e a enviou ao rei Abgar. Quando partiram dali, seguiram caminho para Jerusalém; e viram muitos homens que vinham de longe para ver Cristo, pois a fama de seus feitos maravilhosos se espalhara por terras remotas.

3They brought him letters concerning the affairs of the kingdom; and when they went to him, he received them with joy and honour, and they were with him twenty and five days. He wrote for them a reply to the letters, and sent them to Abgar the king. When they went forth from him, they set out and came on the way towards Jerusalem; and they saw many men, who came from a distance to see Christ, because the fame of his wonderful deeds had gone forth to remote countries.

4Quando Marihab, Shamshagram e Hannan, o guardião dos arquivos, viram aqueles homens, também foram com eles a Jerusalém. Ao entrarem em Jerusalém, viram Cristo e alegraram-se com as multidões que se haviam unido a Ele. Mas viram também os judeus, que permaneciam em grupos e ponderavam o que fariam a Ele; pois estavam perturbados ao ver que uma multidão de seu povo O confessava.

4When Marihab, Shamshagram, and Hannan, the keeper of the archives, saw the men, they also came with them to Jerusalem. When they entered Jerusalem, they saw Christ, and they rejoiced with the multitudes, who were joined to Him. But they saw also the Jews, who were standing in groups, and were considering what they should do to Him; for they were disturbed to see that a multitude of their people confessed Him.

5E ali estiveram em Jerusalém dez dias, e Hannan, o guardião dos arquivos, anotou tudo o que viu Cristo fazer; também o restante do que Ele fizera antes de eles chegarem ali. E partiram e chegaram a Edessa, e entraram na presença do rei Abgar, seu senhor, que os enviara, e lhe entregaram a resposta às cartas que haviam levado consigo.

5And they were there in Jerusalem ten days, and Hannan, the keeper of the archives, wrote down everything which he saw that Christ did; also the rest of that done by Him, before they went thither. And they departed and came to Edessa, and entered into the presence of Abgar the king, their lord, who had sent them, and they gave him the reply of the letters, which they had brought with them.

6Depois de lidas as cartas, começaram a contar diante do rei tudo o que haviam visto e tudo o que Cristo fizera em Jerusalém. E Hannan, o guardião dos arquivos, leu diante dele tudo o que escrevera e trouxera consigo; e, quando o rei Abgar ouviu, ficou admirado e maravilhado, assim como seus príncipes, que estavam diante dele. Abgar lhes disse: Estas obras poderosas não são de homens, mas de Deus; pois ninguém pode dar vida aos mortos senão somente Deus.

6After the letters were read, they began to recount before the king all which they had seen and all which Christ had done in Jerusalem. And Hannan, the keeper of the archives, read before him all which he had written and brought with him; and when Abgar the king heard, he was astonished and wondered, as also his princes, who stood before him. Abgar said to them: These mighty works are not of men, but of God; because there is not any one who can make the dead alive, but God only.

7E Abgar desejava atravessar e ir à Palestina, para ver com os próprios olhos tudo o que Cristo fazia; mas, como não podia atravessar a terra dos romanos, que não lhe pertencia, para que isso não provocasse amarga inimizade, escreveu uma carta e a enviou a Cristo pela mão de Hannan, o guardião dos arquivos. Ele saiu de Edessa no décimo quarto dia de Adar e entrou em Jerusalém no décimo segundo dia de Nisã, no quarto dia da semana (quarta-feira).

7And Abgar wished himself to pass over and go to Palestine, and see with his own eyes all which Christ was doing; but because he was not able to pass through the country of the Romans, which was not his, lest this cause should call forth bitter enmity, he wrote a letter and sent it to Christ by the hand of Hannan, the keeper of the archives. He went forth from Edessa on the fourteenth day of Adar, and entered Jerusalem on the twelfth day of Nisan, on the fourth day of the week (Wednesday).

8E ele encontrou Cristo na casa de Gamaliel, o sumo sacerdote dos judeus. A carta foi lida diante Dele e estava assim escrita: «Abgar Ukkama, a Jesus, o Bom Médico, que apareceu na região de Jerusalém. Meu Senhor: paz. Ouvi falar de Ti e de Tuas curas, que não é com remédios e raízes que curas, mas com Tua palavra abres os olhos dos cegos, fazes andar os coxos, purificas os leprosos e fazes os surdos ouvir.

8And he found Christ at the house of Gamaliel, the chief priest of the Jews. The letter was read before Him, which was written thus:----"Abgar Ukkama, to Jesus, the Good Physician, who has appeared in the country of Jerusalem. My Lord: Peace. I have heard of Thee and of Thy healing, that it is not by medicines and roots Thou healest, but by Thy word Thou openest the eyes of the blind, Thou makest the lame to walk, cleansest the lepers, and makest the deaf to hear.

9E os espíritos impuros, os lunáticos e os atormentados, Tu os curas por Tua palavra; também ressuscitas os mortos. E, quando ouvi falar dessas grandes maravilhas que fazes, concluí em meu íntimo que ou Tu és Deus, que desceste do céu e fazes estas coisas, ou és o Filho de Deus, que faz todas estas coisas. Portanto, escrevi para rogar-Te que venhas a mim, que Te adoro, e cures a doença que tenho, pois creio em Ti.

9And unclean spirits and lunatics, and those tormented, them Thou healest by Thy word; Thou also raisest the dead. And when I heard of these great wonders which Thou doest, I decided in my mind that either Thou art God, who hast come down from heaven and doest these things, or Thou art the Son of God, who doest all these things. Therefore, I have written to request of Thee to come to me who adore Thee, and to heal the disease which I have, as I believe in Thee.

10Também ouvi que os judeus murmuram contra Ti e Te perseguem, e até procuram crucificar-Te e cogitam tratar-Te cruelmente. Possuo uma cidade pequena e bela, e ela basta para que ambos habitemos nela em paz.»

10This also I have heard, that the Jews murmur against Thee and persecute Thee, and even seek to crucify Thee, and contemplate treating Thee cruelly. I possess one small and beautiful city, and it is sufficient for both to dwell in it in quietness."

11Quando Jesus recebeu a carta na casa do sumo sacerdote dos judeus, disse a Hannan, o guardião dos arquivos: «Vai e dize a teu senhor, que te enviou a Mim: 'Bem-aventurado és tu que, embora não Me tenhas visto, crês em Mim, pois está escrito a Meu respeito: Aqueles que Me veem não crerão em Mim, e aqueles que não Me veem crerão em Mim. Quanto ao que Me escreveste, pedindo que Eu vá a ti, aquilo para que fui enviado aqui está agora concluído, e subo a Meu Pai, que Me enviou; e, quando tiver subido a Ele, enviar-te-ei um dos Meus discípulos, que curará a doença que tens e te restituirá a saúde; e a todos os que estão contigo ele converterá à vida eterna.

11When Jesus received the letter at the house of the chief priest of the Jews, He said to Hannan, the keeper of the archives: "Go and say to thy lord, who hath sent thee to Me, 'Blessed art thou, who, although thou hast not seen Me, believest in Me, for it is written of Me, Those who see Me will not believe in Me, and those who see Me not, will believe in me. But as to that which thou hast written to Me, that I should come to thee, that for which I was sent here is now finished, and I am going up to my Father, who sent me, and when I have gone up to Him, I will send to thee one of my disciples, who will cure the disease which thou hast, and restore thee to health; and all who are with thee he will convert to everlasting life.

12Tua cidade será abençoada, e nenhum inimigo voltará a dominá-la para sempre.'»

12Thy city shall be blessed, and no enemy shall again become master of it for ever.'"

13Quando Hannan, o guardião dos arquivos, ouviu Jesus falar-lhe assim, por ser pintor do rei, pintou uma imagem de Jesus com tintas escolhidas e a levou a Abgar, o rei, seu senhor. E, quando o rei Abgar viu a imagem, recebeu-a com grande alegria e a colocou com grande honra numa de suas casas palacianas. Hannan, o guardião dos arquivos, relatou-lhe tudo o que ouvira de Jesus, cujas palavras ele registrara por escrito.

13When Hannan, the keeper of the archives, saw that Jesus spake thus to him, by virtue of being the king's painter, he took and painted a likeness of Jesus with choice paints, and brought with him to Abgar the king, his master. And when Abgar the king saw the likeness, he received it with great joy, and placed it with great honour in one of his palatial houses. Hannan, the keeper of the archives, related to him everything which he had heard from Jesus, as His words were put by him in writing.

14Depois que Cristo subiu ao céu, Judas Tomé enviou a Abgar o apóstolo Addai, que era um dos setenta e dois apóstolos. E, quando Addai chegou à cidade de Edessa, hospedou-se na casa de Tobias, filho de Tobias, o judeu, que era da Palestina.

14After that Christ had ascended to heaven, Judas Thomas sent to Abgar, Addai the Apostle, who was one of the seventy-two Apostles. And when Addai came to the city of Edessa, he dwelt at the house of Tobias, son of Tobias the Jew, who was of Palestine.

15Por toda a cidade se ouviu falar dele, e um dos nobres de Abgar, chamado Abdu, filho de Abdu, um dos que se sentavam com os joelhos dobrados diante de Abgar, foi falar-lhe sobre Addai: eis que chegou um mensageiro e mora aqui, aquele de quem Jesus te mandou dizer: «Enviar-te-ei um dos Meus discípulos.» E, quando Abgar ouviu estas palavras, e os atos poderosos que Addai praticava e as curas maravilhosas que realizava, ficou certo em seu íntimo: Verdadeiramente este é aquele que Jesus enviou, dizendo: «Quando Eu tiver subido ao céu, enviar-te-ei um dos Meus discípulos, e ele curará tua doença.» Então Abgar mandou chamar Tobias e lhe disse: Ouvi que chegou um homem poderoso, que se hospeda em tua casa.

15Through all the city a report was heard of him, and one of the nobles of Abgar whose name was Abdu, the son of Abdu, one of those who sat with bended knees before Abgar, went and said concerning Addai: behold, a messenger has come, and dwells here, he of whom Jesus sent to thee, "I send to Thee one of my disciples." And when Abgar heard these words, and the mighty acts which Addai did, and the wonderful cures which he effected, he thought for certain in his mind: Truly this is he whom Jesus sent, saying, "When I have ascended to heaven I will send to thee one of my disciples, and he will cure thy disease." And Abgar sent and called for Tobias, and said to him, I have heard that a certain powerful man has come, and dwells in thy house.

16Traze-o a mim; por meio dele encontrei boa esperança de cura. Tobias foi cedo no dia seguinte, tomou consigo o apóstolo Addai e o levou a Abgar, sabendo o próprio Addai que fora enviado a ele pelo poder de Deus. E, quando Addai subiu e se aproximou de Abgar, estando seus nobres com ele, Abgar viu uma visão maravilhosa no rosto de Addai ao aproximar-se. No instante em que Abgar viu a visão, prostrou-se e adorou Addai.

16Bring him up to me; a good hope of recovery through him has been found for me. Tobias went early on the next day and took Addai the Apostle, and brought him up to Abgar, Addai himself knowing that by the power of God he was sent to him. And when Addai came up and went to Abgar, his nobles standing with him, and in going towards him, a wonderful vision was seen by Abgar in the face of Addai. At the moment that Abgar saw the vision, he fell down and worshipped Addai.

17Grande espanto tomou todos os que estavam diante dele, pois não viram a visão que Abgar havia visto.

17Great astonishment seized all those who were standing before him, for they saw not the vision which was seen by Abgar.

18Então Abgar disse a Addai: «Em verdade, és discípulo de Jesus, aquele poderoso, o Filho de Deus, que me enviou esta mensagem: Enviar-te-ei um dos Meus discípulos para cura e para vida.» Addai lhe disse: «Porque desde o princípio creste Naquele que me enviou a ti, fui enviado a ti; e, se creres Nele, terás tudo aquilo em que creres.» Abgar lhe disse: «De tal modo creio Nele que, quanto aos judeus que O crucificaram, desejo levar comigo um exército e ir destruí-los; mas, como o reino pertence aos romanos, fui contido pela aliança de paz que eu confirmei com nosso senhor, o imperador Tibério, como fizeram meus antepassados.» Addai lhe disse: «Nosso Senhor cumpriu a vontade de Seu Pai.

18Then Abgar said to Addai, "Of a truth thou art the disciple of Jesus, that mighty one, the son of God, who sent to me saying I send thee one of my disciples for healing and for life." Addai said to him, "Because that from the beginning thou didst believe in Him who sent me to thee, therefore have I been sent to thee, and if thou believest in Him, everything in which thou dost believe thou shalt have." Abgar said to him, "So have I believed in Him, that with respect to those Jews who crucified Him, I desire to take with me an army, and to go and destroy them; but because the kingdom belongs to the Romans, I was restrained by the covenant of peace, which was confirmed by me with our lord the emperor Tiberius, like my forefathers." Addai said to him, "Our Lord has fulfilled the will of His Father.

19E, quando completou a vontade de Seu Genitor, foi elevado a Seu Pai e sentou-Se com Ele em glória, com Quem estava desde a eternidade.» Abgar lhe disse: «Eu também creio Nele e em Seu Pai.» Addai lhe disse: «Porque assim crês, imponho minha mão sobre ti, em nome Daquele em Quem crês.»

19And when He had completed the will of His Parent, He was taken up to His Father, and sat with Him in glory, with whom he was from eternity." Abgar said to him: "I also believe in Him and in His Father." Addai said to him: "Because that thou so believest, I place my hand on thee, in the name of Him in whom thou believest."

20No instante em que pôs a mão sobre ele, Abgar foi curado do flagelo da doença que padecia havia muito tempo. Abgar ficou admirado e espantado, pois, conforme lhe haviam contado a respeito de Jesus, do que Ele fazia e curava, assim também o próprio Addai, sem remédio de espécie alguma, curava em nome de Jesus.

20At the moment that he placed his hand upon him, he was cured of the plague of the disease, which he had had for a long time. Abgar wondered and was astonished, that as it was reported to him concerning Jesus, that which He did and cured; so also Addai himself, without medicine of any kind, healed in the name of Jesus.

21Também quanto a Abdu, filho de Abdu, ele tinha gota nos pés; aproximou igualmente os pés de Addai, e este pôs a mão sobre eles e o curou; e nunca mais teve gota. E em toda a cidade Addai realizou grandes curas e nela mostrou maravilhosas obras poderosas.

21And also with respect to Abdu, the son of Abdu, he had the gout in his feet, and he too brought his feet near him, and he (Addai) placed his hand upon them and healed him; and he had not the gout again. And also in all the city he wrought great cures, and showed wonderful mighty works in it.

22Abgar lhe disse: «Agora que todos sabem que pelo poder de Jesus Cristo realizas estas obras maravilhosas, e eis que nos admiramos de teus feitos, peço-te, portanto, que nos relates como foi a vinda de Cristo, e nos fales de Seu glorioso poder e daqueles milagres que ouvimos que Ele realizou e que viste com os demais companheiros.» Addai lhe disse: «Não me calarei quanto a isso, pois para isso fui enviado aqui: para falar e ensinar a todos os que, como tu, estejam dispostos a crer.

22Abgar said to him: "Now that every man knoweth that by the power of Jesus Christ thou doest these wonderful works, and behold we are wondering at thy works, I require therefore of thee, that thou wouldest recount to us concerning the coining of Christ, how it was, and concerning His glorious power, and concerning those miracles which we have heard that He did, which thou hast seen with the rest of thy companions." Addai said to him: "I will not keep silent from declaring this; for because of this I was sent here to speak and to teach every one, who, like thee, is willing to believe.

23Amanhã reúne para mim toda a cidade, para que nela eu semeie a Palavra da Vida pela pregação que farei diante de vós acerca da vinda de Cristo, de como se deu, de Seu glorioso poder e Daquele que O enviou, para que e como O enviou, e de Seu poder e Suas obras maravilhosas, e dos gloriosos mistérios de Sua vinda, dos quais Ele falou no mundo, e da certeza de Sua pregação, de como e por que Se abateu e humilhou Sua excelsa divindade mediante o corpo que assumiu, e foi crucificado e desceu à morada dos mortos, e rompeu a parede divisória, que jamais fora rompida, e deu vida aos mortos ao ser Ele próprio morto, e desceu por Si mesmo e ascendeu com muitos a Seu glorioso Pai, com Quem estava desde a eternidade numa única divindade excelsa.

23Tomorrow assemble for me all the city, that I may sow in it the Word of Life, by the preaching which I will preach before you concerning the coming of Christ, how it was, and concerning His glorious power, and concerning Him that sent Him, for what and how He sent Him, and concerning His power and His wonderful works, and concerning the glorious mysteries of His coming, which He spake in the world, and concerning the certitude of His preaching, how and for what He abased Himself, and humbled His exalted divinity by the body, which He took, and was crucified and descended to the house of the dead, and cleaved the wall of partition, which had never been cleft, and gave life to the dead by being Himself slain, and descended by Himself, and ascended with many to His glorious Father, with whom He was from, eternity in one exalted divinity.

24E Abgar ordenou que entregassem a Addai prata e ouro. Addai lhe disse: «Como poderíamos receber algo que não é nosso? Pois eis que abandonamos o que era nosso, porque nosso Senhor nos ordenou que andássemos sem bolsas nem alforjes; e, levando cruzes sobre os ombros, fomos mandados a pregar Seu Evangelho a toda a criação: toda a criação sentiu e sofreu com Sua crucificação, que foi por nós, para a salvação de todos os homens.

24And Abgar commanded that they should deliver to Addai silver and gold. Addai said to him: "How are we able to receive anything which is not ours? for, behold, that which was ours we have forsaken, as we were commanded by our Lord to be without purses and without scrips, and carrying crosses upon our shoulders, we were commanded to preach His Gospel to the whole creation: the whole creation felt and suffered by His crucifixion, which was for us, for the salvation of all men.

25E ele narrou diante do rei Abgar, de seus príncipes e nobres, de Augustina, mãe de Abgar, e de Shalmath, filha de Meherdath e esposa de Abgar, os sinais de nosso Senhor e Suas maravilhas, os gloriosos milagres que realizou, Seus triunfos divinos e Sua ascensão ao Pai; e como eles receberam poderes e autoridade no momento em que Ele ascendeu, poder pelo qual ele havia curado Abgar e Abdu, filho de Abdu, o segundo homem de seu reino; e como lhes deu a conhecer o que seria revelado no fim dos tempos e na consumação de todas as criaturas, a revivificação e ressurreição que virá para todos os homens e a separação que haverá entre as ovelhas e os bodes, e entre os fiéis e os incrédulos.

25And he narrated before Abgar the king, and before his princes and his nobles, and before Augustina, the mother of Abgar, and before Shalmath, the daughter of Meherdath, the wife of Abgar, the signs of our Lord and His wonders, and the glorious miracles which He wrought, and His divine triumphs, and His ascension to His Father; and how they received powers and authorities at the time that He ascended, by which same power he had healed Abgar and Abdu, the son of Abdu, the second person of his kingdom; and how he made them know that which would be revealed at the end of times, and in the consummation of all creatures, and the resuscitation and resurrection, which is about to be for all men, and the separation which is to be between the sheep and the goats, and between the faithful and the unbelieving.

26E lhes disse: «Porque a porta da vida é estreita e o caminho da verdade é apertado, poucos, portanto, são os que creem na verdade, e no poder da incredulidade está o deleite de Satanás. Por isso há muitos mentirosos, que levam ao erro os que os contemplam. Pois, se não houvesse um bom fim para os homens fiéis, nosso Senhor não teria descido do céu, nem vindo ao nascimento e ao sofrimento da morte, nem tampouco nos teria enviado para ser Seus pregadores e evangelistas.

26And he said to them: "Because that the gate of life is strait and the way of truth is narrow, therefore few are the believers of truth, and in the power of unbelief is Satan's recreation. Because of this there are many liars, who cause to err those who look on. For except that there is a good end for faithful men, our Lord had not descended from heaven, and come to the birth, and to the suffering of death, and also He had not sent us to be His preachers and evangelists.

27Aquilo que vimos e ouvimos Dele, o que Ele fez e ensinou, pregamos com confiança diante de todos os homens; pois não cometeríamos qualquer injustiça contra a verdade de Seu Evangelho. E não apenas essas coisas, mas também as que foram feitas em Seu Nome, após Sua ascensão, mostramos e pregamos.

27Those things which we saw and heard from Him, which He did and taught, we confidently preach before all men; for we would not do any wrong with respect to the truth of His Gospel. And not these things only; but also those which were done in His Name, after His ascension, we show and preach.

28Contar-vos-ei o que aconteceu e foi feito na presença de homens que, como vós, creram em Cristo, que Ele é o Filho do Deus vivo.

28I will tell before you that which happened and was done in the presence of men, who, as you, believed in Christ, that He is the Son of the living God.

29Protonice, esposa do imperador Cláudio, a quem Tibério fizera segundo em seu reino quando partiu para guerrear contra os espanhóis que se haviam rebelado contra ele, esta mulher, quando Simão, um dos discípulos, estava na cidade de Roma, e ela viu os sinais, maravilhas e obras admiráveis que ele fazia em nome de Cristo, renunciou ao paganismo de seus pais, no qual fora criada, e às imagens idólatras que adorara; e creu em Cristo, nosso Senhor, adorou-O, louvou-O com os que se haviam unido a Simão e O teve em grande honra.

29Protonice, the wife of the Emperor Claudius, whom Tiberius made second in his kingdom, when he went to make war with the Spaniards, who had rebelled against him, this woman, when Simon, one of the disciples, was in the city of Rome, and she saw the signs and wonders, and marvellous works which he did in the name of Christ; denied the paganism of her fathers in which she was brought up, and the idolatrous images which she had worshipped; and she believed in Christ our Lord, and worshipped Him, and praised with those who were joined unto Simon, and held Him in great honour.

30Depois disso, desejou também ver Jerusalém e os lugares onde as obras poderosas de nosso Senhor haviam sido realizadas. Então se levantou prontamente e desceu de Roma a Jerusalém, ela, seus dois filhos e sua única filha virgem.

30After this she wished also to see Jerusalem, and those places in which the mighty works of our Lord were done. So she arose promptly and descended from Rome to Jerusalem, she and her two sons with her, and her one virgin daughter.

31Quando ela entrava em Jerusalém, a cidade saiu ao seu encontro, e a receberam com grande honra, como é devido à rainha, senhora da grande terra dos romanos. Mas Tiago, que fora constituído dirigente e governante na igreja que ali fora edificada para nós, ao ouvir com que propósito ela chegara, levantou-se e foi até ela. E entrou à sua presença no lugar onde estava hospedada, no grande palácio real do rei Herodes.

31When she was entering Jerusalem, the city went forth to meet her, and they received her with great honour, as that which is due to the queen, the mistress of the great country of the Romans. But James, who was made director and ruler in the church which was built for us there, when he had heard for what purpose she had gone there, arose and went to her. And he entered into her presence where she was dwelling, in the royal great palace of king Herod.

32Quando o viu, recebeu-o com grande alegria, assim como recebera Simão Pedro. Ele também lhe mostrou curas e obras poderosas, como fizera Simão, e ela lhe disse: «Mostra-me o Gólgota, onde Cristo foi crucificado, e a madeira de Sua cruz, na qual os judeus O suspenderam, e o sepulcro em que foi colocado.» Tiago lhe disse: «Essas três coisas que Vossa Majestade deseja ver estão sob o controle dos judeus.

32When she saw him, she received him with great joy, as also she had Simon Peter. He also showed her cures and mighty works as did Simon, and she said to him: "Show me Golgotha, on which Christ was crucified, and the wood of His cross on which He was suspended by the Jews, and the grave in which He was placed.'' James said to her: "These three things which thy Majesty wishes to see are under the control of the Jews.

33Eles as possuem e não nos permitem ir orar ali diante do Gólgota e do sepulcro, nem nos entregam a madeira de Sua cruz. E não apenas isso: também nos perseguem severamente para que não anunciemos e preguemos em nome de Cristo, e muitas vezes nos lançam na prisão.» Quando ouviu essas coisas, a rainha imediatamente deu ordem, e trouxeram diante dela Onias, filho do sacerdote Hannan, Gedalias, filho de Caifás, e Judá, filho de Ebed Shalom, chefes e governantes dos judeus.

33They possess them, and permit us not to go to pray there before Golgotha and the grave, and neither the wood of His cross will they give us. And not only this, but they also severely persecute us, that we may not publish and preach in the name of Christ, and many times also they bind us in prison." When she heard these things, the queen immediately commanded, and they brought before her Onias, the son of Hannan the priest, and Gedalia, son of Caiaphas, and Judah the son of Ebed Shalom, chiefs and rulers of the Jews.

34E lhes disse: «Entregai o Gólgota, o sepulcro e a madeira da cruz a Tiago e aos que com ele concordam, e ninguém os impeça de ali ministrar conforme o costume de seu ministério.» E, depois de assim ordenar aos sacerdotes, levantou-se para ir ver esses lugares, e também entregou aquele lugar a Tiago e aos que estavam com ele.

34And she said to them: "Deliver up Golgotha, and the grave, and the wood of the cross, to James, and those who agree with him, and let no man forbid them to minister there according to the custom of their ministry." And when she had so commanded the priests, she arose to go and see these places, and she also delivered that place to James, and those who were with him.

35Depois entrou no sepulcro e ali encontrou três cruzes: uma de nosso Senhor e duas daqueles ladrões que foram crucificados com Ele, à Sua direita e à Sua esquerda. E, no momento em que entrou no sepulcro — ela e seus filhos com ela —, sua filha virgem caiu e morreu naquele mesmo instante, sem dor, sem doença e sem qualquer causa de morte.

35Afterwards she entered the grave, and found in the grave three crosses, one of our Lord, and two of those robbers, who were crucified with Him, on His right hand and on His left. And at the time that she entered into the grave----she and her children with her----at that instant her virgin daughter fell down and died, without pain, without disease, and without any cause of death.

36E, quando a rainha viu que sua filha morrera de repente, ajoelhou-se e orou dentro do sepulcro, dizendo em sua oração: «Deus, que Te entregaste à morte por todos os homens, foste crucificado neste lugar e posto neste sepulcro; e, como Deus que conserva a vida de todos, ressuscitaste e fizeste muitos ressuscitar Contigo; para que os judeus, os crucificadores, não ouçam — e também os gentios errantes, cujos ídolos, imagens esculpidas e terrores do paganismo eu repudiei — e, ao me verem, não zombem de mim, dizendo que tudo isso lhe aconteceu porque ela negou os deuses que adorava, confessou Cristo, a quem não conhecia, e foi honrar o lugar de Seu sepulcro e de Sua crucificação; e, se eu, ó meu Senhor, não sou digna de ser ouvida, porque adorei criaturas em vez de Ti, concede misericórdia, por causa de Teu adorável Nome, para que Ele não seja blasfemado neste lugar, como blasfemaram de Ti em Tua crucificação.» Disse essas coisas em sua oração e, no fervor de sua súplica, repetiu-as diante de todos os presentes.

36And when the queen saw that her daughter had died suddenly, she kneeled and prayed within the grave, and said in her prayer: "God, who gave Himself to death for all men, and was crucified in this place, and was laid in this grave; and as God, who keepeth alive all, has risen, and made many to rise with Him, lest the Jews, the crucifiers, should hear----and also the erring heathens, whose idols and graven images, and the terrors of paganism, I have denied----and they see me, deride me, and say that all this which has happened to her is because that she denied the gods, which she did worship, and confessed Christ, whom she knew not, and went to honour the place of His grave and His crucifixion; and if, O my Lord, I am not worthy to be heard, because that I have worshipped creatures instead of Thee; spare Thou, for the sake of Thy adorable Name, that it may not be blasphemed in this place, as they blasphemed Thee at Thy crucifixion." She said these things in her prayer, and, in the excitement of her supplication, she repeated them before all those who were there.

37Seu filho mais velho aproximou-se dela e lhe disse: «Ouve o que direi diante de Vossa Majestade. Assim penso em minha mente e em meu coração: esta morte súbita de minha irmã não foi em vão; é uma obra maravilhosa na qual Deus será louvado, e Seu Nome não será blasfemado, como pensaram os que ouviram falar disso. Eis que entramos no sepulcro e nele encontramos três cruzes, e não sabemos qual delas é a cruz em que Cristo foi suspenso.

37Her eldest son approached her, and said to her: "Hear that which I shall say before thy Majesty. I think thus in my mind and in my thought, that this death of this my sister, which was sudden, was not for nought; but this is a wonderful work, in which God will be praised, and not that His Name will be blasphemed, as those thought, who heard it. Behold, we enter the grave and find in it three crosses, and we know not which of them is the cross on which Christ was suspended.

38Pela morte desta minha irmã, talvez possamos ver e descobrir qual é a cruz de Cristo, pois Cristo não desampara os que Nele creem e O buscam.» E a rainha Protonice — cuja alma estava muito triste naquele momento — percebeu em seu íntimo que seu filho falara com sabedoria, justiça e retidão.

38In the death of this my sister, we may be able to see and to learn which is the cross of Christ, for Christ is not neglectful of those who believe in Him, and seek Him." And the queen Protonice----her soul was very sad at this time----saw in her mind that her son spake these things wisely, justly and rightly.

39E com as mãos tomou uma das cruzes e a colocou sobre o corpo morto de sua filha, que jazia diante dela, e disse em sua oração: «Ó Deus, que mostraste obras maravilhosas neste lugar, conforme ouvimos e cremos, se esta cruz, ó Senhor, é Tua, e nela Tua humanidade foi suspensa pelos insolentes, manifesta o forte e poderoso vigor de Tua divindade, que habita na humanidade, e restitui a vida a esta minha filha, para que se levante e Teu Nome seja glorificado nela.

39And with her hands she took hold of one of the crosses and placed it upon the dead body of her daughter, which lay before her, and she said in her prayer: "O God, who hast shown wonderful works in this place, as we hear and believe, if this cross, O Lord, be Thine, and on it Thy humanity was suspended by the insolent, show the strong and mighty power of Thy divinity, which dwells in the humanity, and restore to life this my daughter, that she may arise, and Thy Name be glorified in her.

40Que sua alma volte ao corpo, para que Teus crucificadores sejam confundidos e Teus adoradores se alegrem!» E ela esperou longo tempo depois de assim falar. Em seguida retirou aquela cruz do corpo morto de sua filha, colocou outra e também disse em sua oração:

40May her soul return to her body, that Thy crucifiers may be confounded and Thy worshippers may rejoice! And she waited a long time after she had spoken thus. Afterwards she took that cross from the dead body of her daughter, and placed another, and also said in her prayer:

41«Ó Deus, por cujo aceno subsistem os mundos e as criaturas, que desejas a vida de todos os homens para que se voltem a Ti e não desdenhas a súplica dos que Te buscam, se esta cruz é Tua, ó Senhor, manifesta o poder de Teus triunfos, como costumas fazer, e restitui a vida a esta minha filha, para que ela se levante e os gentios, que adoram Tuas criaturas em vez de Ti, sejam confundidos, e os fiéis e os verdadeiros possam confessar-Te, para que sua boca se abra em Teu louvor diante dos que Te negam!» E ela esperou muito tempo depois disso e retirou a segunda cruz de sua filha; então tomou a terceira cruz e a colocou sobre ela.

41"O God, by whose nod worlds and creatures endure, and wishing the life of all men that they may be turned to Him, and is not neglectful of the petition of those who seek Him, if this cross be Thine, O Lord, show the power of Thy triumphs as Thou art accustomed, and restore to life this my daughter, that she may arise, and the heathens, worshipping Thy creatures instead of Thee, may be confounded, and the faithful and the true may confess, that their mouth may be opened to Thy praise before those who deny Thee!" And she waited a long time after these things, and took the second cross from her daughter; and she took the third cross and placed it upon her daughter.

42E, quando ia levantar os olhos ao céu e abrir a boca em oração, naquele momento, naquele instante, num piscar de olhos, assim que a cruz tocou o corpo morto de sua filha, ela voltou à vida, levantou-se de repente e louvou a Deus, que a restituíra à vida por Sua cruz.

42And as she was going to lift up her eyes to heaven, and to open her mouth in prayer, at that moment, at that time, in the twinkling of an eye, that, the cross touched the dead body of her daughter, her daughter became alive, and she arose suddenly, and praised God, who had restored her to life by His cross.

43Mas a rainha Protonice, quando viu sua filha voltar à vida, tremeu e ficou profundamente assustada; porém, mesmo assustada, glorificou Cristo e creu Nele, que era o Filho do Deus vivo. Seu filho lhe disse: «Minha senhora, vês que, se isso não tivesse acontecido hoje, poderiam ter deixado de lado esta cruz de Cristo, pela qual minha irmã voltou à vida, e tomado e honrado a de um daqueles ladrões assassinos.

43But the queen Protonice, when she saw how her daughter became alive, trembled, and was greatly alarmed, but though alarmed she glorified Christ, and believed in Him, that He was the Son of the living God. Her son said to her: "My lady, thou seest that if this had not occurred today, it might have happened that they would have left this cross of Christ, by which my sister became alive, and have taken and honoured that of one of those murderous thieves.

44Agora, eis que vemos e nos alegramos, e Cristo, que fez esta obra, é glorificado nela.» E ela tomou a cruz de Cristo e a entregou a Tiago, para que fosse guardada com grande honra. Também ordenou que se erguesse uma construção grande e esplêndida sobre o Gólgota, onde Ele foi crucificado, e sobre o sepulcro em que foi colocado, para que esses lugares fossem honrados; e que ali houvesse um local de reunião para oração e uma assembleia para o culto.

44Now, behold, we see and rejoice, and Christ, who has done this thing, is glorified in her." And she took the cross of Christ, and gave it to James, that it might be kept with great honour. She also commanded that a great and splendid building should be erected over Golgotha, on which He was crucified, and over the grave in which He was placed, so that these places might be honoured; and that there should be there a place of assembly for prayer, and a gathering for service.

45Mas a rainha, ao ver toda a população da cidade que reunira para presenciar aquela obra, ordenou que sua filha, sem o véu de honra usado pelas rainhas, fosse com ela, de rosto descoberto, ao palácio do rei onde morava, para que todos a vissem e louvassem a Deus. Porém os judeus e os gentios que se alegraram e se regozijaram no início desse acontecimento ficaram muito tristes ao final.

45But the queen, when she saw the whole population of the city, which she had collected for the sight of this work, she commanded that, without the covering of honour worn by queens, her daughter should go with her unveiled to the palace of the king, in which she dwelt, so that every one might see her and praise God. But the people of the Jews and the Gentiles, who rejoiced at the beginning of this occurrence, and were glad, became very sad at the end of it.

46Pois teriam preferido que isso não acontecesse, porque viam que, por causa disso, muitos criam em Cristo; sobretudo quando viram que os milagres realizados em Seu Nome após Sua ascensão eram muito mais numerosos que os feitos antes dela. E a fama desse acontecimento chegou a terras distantes, bem como aos apóstolos, meus companheiros, que pregavam Cristo.

46For they would have been well pleased if this had not occurred, for they saw on account of this many believed in Christ; and especially when they saw that the miracles, which were done in His Name after His ascension, were many more than those which were done before His ascension. And the fame of this deed which was done went forth to distant countries, and also to the Apostles, my companions, who preached Christ.

47E houve paz nas igrejas de Jerusalém e nas cidades ao redor; e os que não viram essa obra, juntamente com os que a viram, louvaram a Deus. E, quando a rainha subiu de Jerusalém à cidade de Roma, em cada cidade por onde passava as pessoas se aglomeravam para ver sua filha. E, ao entrar em Roma, relatou ao imperador Cláudio o que acontecera; e, quando o imperador ouviu, ordenou que todos os judeus saíssem da terra da Itália.

47And there was rest in the churches of Jerusalem, and the cities round about it; and those who saw not this deed, with those who did see it, praised God. And when the queen went up from Jerusalem to the city of Rome, every city which she entered pressed to see the sight of her daughter. And when she had entered Eome, she recounted before the Emperor Claudius those things which had happened; and when the Emperor heard, he commanded that all the Jews should go forth from the country of Italy.

48Em toda aquela terra muitos falaram desse acontecimento, que também foi relatado diante de Simão Pedro. «Tudo o que também fizeram os apóstolos, meus companheiros, pregamos diante de cada homem, para que os que não sabem também ouçam aquilo que Cristo fez manifestamente por nossas mãos, a fim de que nosso Senhor seja glorificado por todos. Essas coisas que repito diante de vós são contadas para que saibais e compreendais quão grande é a fé de Cristo entre os que verdadeiramente se unem a Ele.

48In all that country this deed was spoken of by many, and also before Simon Peter this was recounted, which was done. "Whatsoever also the Apostles, companions, did, we preach before every man, that those who do not know may likewise hear those things which, by our hand, Christ did openly, that our Lord might be glorified by every man. These things which I repeat before you are told, that ye may know and understand how great is the faith of Christ among those who truly join themselves to Him.

49Mas Tiago, o dirigente da Igreja de Jerusalém, que viu o acontecimento com os próprios olhos, fez um relato escrito e o enviou aos apóstolos, meus companheiros, nas cidades de seus países. Também os próprios apóstolos escreveram relatos e deram a conhecer a Tiago tudo o que Cristo fizera por suas mãos; e esses relatos eram lidos diante de toda a multidão do povo da igreja.

49But James, the director of the Church of Jerusalem, who with his own eyes saw the deed, gave a written account, and sent it to the Apostles, my companions, in the cities of their countries. And also the Apostles themselves gave written accounts, and made known to James whatsoever that Christ had done by their hands, and these were read before all the multitude of the people of the church.

50Mas, quando o rei Abgar ouviu essas coisas, ele, sua mãe Augustina, Shalmath, filha de Meherdath, Paqûr, Abdshemesh, Shamshagram, Abdu, Azzai e Bar-kalba, com os demais companheiros, alegraram-se sobremaneira, e todos glorificaram a Deus e confessaram sua fé em Cristo.

50But when Abgar the king heard these things, he and Augustina, his mother, and Shalmath, the daughter of Meherdath, and Paqûr and Abdshemesh, and Shamshagram, and Abdu, and Azzai and Bar-kalba, with the rest of their companions, rejoiced exceedingly, and all of them glorified God, and made their confession in Christ.

51O rei Abgar disse a Addai: «Desejo que tudo o que ouvimos de ti hoje, e também o restante das outras coisas, contes abertamente diante de toda a cidade, para que todos ouçam a pregação do Evangelho de Cristo que nos ensinas, nela descansem e se firmem na doutrina que nos ensinas, para que muitos compreendam que cri corretamente em Cristo na carta que Lhe enviei e saibam que Ele é Deus, o Filho de Deus, e que tu és Seu discípulo verdadeiro e fiel, e que por tuas obras mostras Seu glorioso poder diante dos que desejam crer Nele.

51Abgar the king said to Addai: "I wish that everything which we have heard from thee today, and the rest also of the other things, thou wouldst tell openly before all the city, that every man may hear the preaching of the Gospel of Christ, which thou teachest to us, that he may rest and be confirmed in the doctrine which thou teachest to us, that many may understand that I believed rightly in Christ, in the Letter which I sent to Him, and may know that He is God, the Son of God, and thou art His true and faithful disciple, and that thou showest by works His glorious power before those who wish to believe in Him.

52No dia seguinte, Abgar ordenou a Abdu, filho de Abdu, que fora curado de uma grave doença nos pés, que enviasse um arauto para proclamar por toda a cidade que toda a população, homens e mulheres, se reunisse no lugar chamado Beththabara, o amplo espaço da casa de Avida, filho de Abd-nachad, para ouvir a doutrina do apóstolo Addai, como ele ensinava, em nome de quem curava, por que poder realizava esses milagres e as maravilhas que fazia.

52The day after, Abgar commanded Abdu, the son of Abdu, who was healed of a sore disease of his feet, to send a herald, that he may proclaim in all the city that the whole population may be assembled, men and women, at the place which is called Beththabara, the wide space of the house of Avida, the son of Abd-nachad, that they might hear the doctrine of Addai the Apostle, and how he taught, and in the name of whom he cured, and by what power he wrought these miracles, and those wonders he did.

53Pois, quando ele curou o rei Abgar, somente os nobres estavam diante dele e o viram curá-lo pela palavra de Cristo; muitos médicos não haviam podido curá-lo, mas um estrangeiro o curou pela fé em Cristo.

53For when he healed Abgar the king, it was the nobles only who stood before him, and saw him, when he healed him by the word of Christ, whom many physicians were not able to heal, but a stranger cured him by the faith of Christ.

54E, quando toda a cidade se reuniu, homens e mulheres, conforme o rei ordenara, estavam ali Avida, Labbu, Chaphsai, Bar-Kalba, Labubna, Chesrun e Shamshagram, com seus companheiros, que eram príncipes, nobres e comandantes do rei; e todos os trabalhadores e artesãos, os judeus e gentios da cidade, os estrangeiros das terras de Soba e Harran e os demais habitantes de toda aquela região da Mesopotâmia. Todos estavam de pé para ouvir a doutrina de Addai, de quem haviam ouvido dizer que era discípulo de Jesus, crucificado em Jerusalém, e que efetuava curas em Seu nome.

54And when all the city were assembled, men and women, as the king had commanded, Avida and Labbu, and Chaphsai, and Bar-Kalba, and Labubna, and Chesrun, and Shamshagram stood there, with their companions, who as they were princes and nobles of the king, and commanders, and all the workmen and the artisans and the Jews and Gentiles who were in this city, and strangers of the countries of Soba and Harran, and the rest of the inhabitants of all this country of Mesopotamia, all of them stood to hear the doctrine of Addai; concerning whom they had heard; that he was the disciple of Jesus, who was crucified in Jerusalem, and he effected cures in His name.

55E Addai começou a falar-lhes assim:

55And Addai began to speak to them thus:

56«Ouvi todos e compreendei o que digo diante de vós: não sou médico de remédios e raízes, da arte dos filhos dos homens; sou discípulo de Jesus Cristo, o Médico das almas perturbadas e o Salvador da vida futura, o Filho de Deus, que desceu do céu, revestiu-Se de um corpo e Se fez homem; e entregou-Se e foi crucificado por todos os homens.

56"Hear, all of you, and understand that which I speak before you; that I am not a physician of medicines and roots, of the art of the sons of men; but I am the disciple of Jesus Christ, the Physician of troubled souls, and the Saviour of future life, the Son of God, who came down from heaven, and was clothed with a body and became man; and He gave Himself and was crucified for all men.

57E, quando foi suspenso no madeiro, escureceu o sol no firmamento; e, depois de entrar no sepulcro, ressuscitou e saiu dele com muitos.

57And when He was suspended on the wood, the sun He made dark in the firmament; and when He had entered the grave, He arose and went forth from the grave with many.

58E os que guardavam o sepulcro não viram como Ele saiu dele; mas os anjos do céu foram os pregadores e anunciadores de Sua ressurreição. Se Ele não tivesse querido, não teria morrido, pois é o Senhor da morte, o termo de todas as coisas. E, se não Lhe tivesse agradado, não teria novamente Se revestido de um corpo, pois é Ele próprio o formador do corpo.

58And those who guarded the grave saw not how He went forth from the grave; but the angels of heaven were the preachers and publishers of His resurrection, who if He had not wished, had not died, because that He is the Lord of death, the exit of all things. And except it had pleased Him,He had not again clothed Himself with a body, for He is Himself the framer of the body.

59Pois a vontade que O inclinou a nascer de uma virgem também O levou a consentir no sofrimento da morte, e Ele humilhou a majestade de Sua excelsa divindade. Ele estava com Seu Pai desde a eternidade; Dele falaram os antigos profetas em seus mistérios, e eles representaram imagens de Seu nascimento, de Seu sofrimento, de Sua ressurreição, de Sua ascensão ao Pai e de Seu assento à direita.

59For the will which inclined Him to the birth from a virgin, also made Him condescend to the suffering of death, and He humbled the majesty of His exalted divinity, who was with His Father from eternity, He of whom Prophets of old spake in their mysteries; and they represented images of His birth, and His suffering, and His resurrection, and His ascension to His Father, and of His sitting at the right hand.

60E eis que Ele é adorado pelos espíritos celestiais e pelos habitantes da terra, Ele, que é adorado desde a eternidade. Pois, embora tivesse aparência humana, Sua força, Seu conhecimento e Seu poder eram os do próprio Deus; como nos disse: Eis que agora o Filho do Homem é glorificado, e Deus glorifica a Si mesmo Nele, por milagres e maravilhas e pela honra de estar à direita.

60And, behold, He is worshipped by celestial spirits, and by the inhabitants of the earth, He who is worshipped from eternity. For although His was the appearance of men, His might, and His knowledge, and His power were of God Himself; as He said to us, Behold, now is the son of man glorified, and God glorifies Himself in Him, by miracles and by wonders, and by honour of being at the right hand.

61Mas Seu corpo é a veste pura de Sua gloriosa divindade, pela qual podemos ver Seu senhorio invisível. Portanto, anunciamos e proclamamos este Jesus Cristo e, com Ele, louvamos Seu Pai, e exaltamos e adoramos o Espírito de Sua divindade, pois Ele nos ordenou assim: batizar e absolver os que creem em nome do Pai, do Filho e do Espírito Santo.

61But His body is the pure vestment of His glorious divinity, by which we are able to see His invisible Lordship. This Jesus Christ, therefore, we preach and publish, and, with Him, we praise His Father, and we extol and worship the Spirit of His divinity, because that we were thus commanded by Him, to baptize and absolve those who believe in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

62Também os antigos profetas disseram: 'O Senhor, nosso Deus, e Seu Espírito nos enviaram.' E, se eu disser algo que não esteja escrito nos Profetas, os judeus que estão entre vós e me ouvem não o aceitarão; e, se eu invocar o nome de Cristo sobre os que padecem sofrimentos e doenças, e eles não forem curados por esse nome glorioso, aqueles que adoram a obra de suas mãos não crerão.

62Also the Prophets of old spake thus: that 'The Lord our God and His Spirit hath sent us.' And if I speak anything which is not written in the Prophets, the Jews, who are standing among you and hear me, will not receive it; and if, again, I make mention of the name of Christ over those who have sufferings and diseases, and they are not healed by this glorious name, they, worshipping the work of their hands, will not believe.

63Ora, se essas coisas que dizemos estão escritas nos Livros dos Profetas, e somos capazes de mostrar o poder de cura sobre os enfermos, ninguém nos olhará sem discernir a fé que pregamos: que Deus foi crucificado por todos os homens. Se há os que não desejam concordar com essas palavras, aproximem-se de nós e revelem-nos o que pensam, para que apliquemos um remédio curativo à doença de sua mente e curemos sua ferida.

63If now these things be written, which we say, in the Books of the Prophets, and we are able to show the healing powers upon the sick, not a man will look on us without discerning the faith which we preach, that God was crucified for all men. If there be those who do not wish to acquiesce in these words, let them draw near to us, and reveal to us what is their mind, that as a disease of their mind we may apply healing medicine for the cure of their wound.

64Pois, embora não estivésseis presentes no momento do sofrimento de Cristo, pelo sol que escureceu e que vistes, aprendei e compreendei o grande horror que houve no momento da crucificação Daquele cujo Evangelho se espalhou por toda a terra, mediante os milagres que Seus discípulos, meus companheiros, realizam por toda a terra.

64For although ye were not present at the time of the suffering of Christ, yet because of the sun, which was dark, and ye saw it, learn and understand concerning the great hororr there was at the time of the crucifixion of Him whose Gospel has flown over all the earth, by the miracles which His disciples, my companions, are working in all the earth.

65E aqueles que eram hebreus e conheciam apenas a língua hebraica em que nasceram, eis que hoje falam em todas as línguas, para que os que estão longe, assim como os que estão perto, ouçam e creiam que Ele é o mesmo que confundiu as línguas dos ímpios nesta região que está diante de nós; é Ele quem hoje ensina por meio de nós a fé da verdade e da veracidade, por meio de homens humildes e miseráveis, vindos da Galileia da Palestina.

65And those who were Hebrews, and knew only the Hebrew tongue in which they were born, behold to day speak in all languages, that those who are far off, as those who are nigh, might hear and believe that He is the same, who confounded the tongues of the impious in this district, which lies before us; He it is who to day teaches through us the faith of truth and verity, by humble and wretched men, who were from Galilee of Palestine.

66Pois eu também, a quem vedes, sou de Paneias, de onde brota o rio Jordão. E fui escolhido, com meus companheiros, para ser pregador deste Evangelho, pelo qual, eis que todas as regiões ressoam com o nome glorioso do adorável Cristo. Portanto, nenhum de vós endureça o coração contra a verdade nem mantenha a mente afastada da veracidade.

66For I also, whom ye see, am from Paneas, from where the river Jordan goes forth. And I was chosen, with my companions, to be a preacher of this Gospel, by which, behold, the regions everywhere resound with the glorious name of the adorable Christ. Let, therefore, no man of you harden his heart against the truth and keep his mind at a distance from verity.

67Não vos deixeis levar cativos por pensamentos destrutivamente errôneos, cheios do desespero de uma morte amarga. Não vos deixeis prender pelos maus costumes do paganismo de vossos pais, mantendo-vos assim afastados da vida de verdade e veracidade que há em Cristo.

67Be ye not led captive after thoughts destructively erroneous, which are full of the despair of a bitter death. Be ye not taken by the evil customs of the paganism of your fathers, and so keep yourselves at a distance from the life of truth and verity, which are in Christ.

68Pois os que Nele creem são aqueles que gozam de confiança diante Dele, que desceu a nós por Seu favor para fazer cessar na terra os sacrifícios do paganismo e as oferendas da idolatria, a fim de que as criaturas não mais sejam adoradas, mas adoremos a Ele e a Seu Pai, com Seu Espírito Santo. Pois eu, conforme meu Senhor me ordenou, eis que prego e anuncio. E eis que lanço diante de vós Sua prata sobre a mesa e semeio a semente de Sua palavra nos ouvidos de todos.

68For those who believe in Him are those who are trusted before Him, who descended to us by His favour, to make to cease from the earth the sacrifices of heathenism, and the offerings of idolatry; that creatures should no longer be worshipped; but we should worship Him and His Father, with His Holy Spirit. For I, as my Lord commanded me, behold, I preach and I publish. And His silver on the table, behold I cast before you, and the seed of His word I sow in the ears of every man.

69Aos que desejam receber pertence a boa recompensa da confissão; e, contra os que não obedecem, sacudo o pó de meus pés, como meu Senhor me ordenou. Portanto, meus amados, afastai-vos dos maus caminhos e dos atos odiosos e voltai-vos a Ele com vontade boa e sincera, assim como Ele Se voltou para vós com Sua graça e Suas ricas misericórdias.

69Those who wish to receive, theirs is the good reward of confession; and those who do not obey, against them I scatter the dust of my feet, as my Lord commanded me. Turn ye, therefore, my beloved, from evil ways and from hateful deeds, and turn yourselves to Him with a good and honest will, as He turned Himself to you with His grace and His rich mercies.

70E não sejais como as gerações antigas, que passaram e que, por terem endurecido o coração contra o temor de Deus, receberam castigo manifesto, para que fossem corrigidas e os que viessem depois delas tremessem e temessem. Pois aquilo para que nosso Senhor veio ao mundo foi, acima de tudo, ensinar e mostrar que, no fim das coisas criadas, haverá ressurreição para todos os homens.

70And be ye not as the generations of old, which are passed, who, because that they hardened their heart against the fear of God, received punishment openly; that they may be chastised, and those who came after them may tremble and fear. For that for which our Lord came into the world was altogether to teach and show that at the end of created things is a resurrection for all men.

71E naquele tempo seus atos e condutas serão representados em suas próprias pessoas, e seus corpos se tornarão volumes onde se escrevem as coisas da justiça, e ninguém haverá que não saiba ler; pois cada homem lerá naquele dia as letras de seu próprio livro e tomará com os dedos das mãos a conta de seus atos.

71And at that time their acts of conduct will be represented on their own persons, and their bodies become volumes for the written things of justice, and there will not be he who knoweth not writing; because that every man shall read the letters of his own book at that day, and the account of his actions he taketh with the fingers of his hands.

72Assim, o iletrado conhecerá a nova escrita da nova língua, e ninguém dirá a seu companheiro: Lê isto para mim, porque uma só doutrina e um só ensinamento reinarão sobre todos os homens.

72Thus the unlettered will know the new writing of the new language, and there is not he who will say to his fellow, Read me this, because that one doctrine and one instruction shall reign over all men.

73Portanto, mantende esse pensamento diante dos olhos e não o deixeis sair da mente, pois, se ele sair da vossa mente, não sairá da Justiça. Buscai as misericórdias de Deus, para que Ele perdoe a odiosa infidelidade de vosso paganismo; pois abandonastes Aquele que vos criou sobre a face da terra e faz descer sobre vós Sua chuva e nascer sobre vós Seu sol, e adorais, em vez Dele, Suas obras.

73Let this thought, therefore, be represented before your eyes, and let it not pass from your mind, because that if it pass from your mind, it passeth not from Justice. Seek mercies from God, that He may pardon the hateful infidelity of your paganism, for ye have forsaken Him who created you upon the face of the earth, and makes His rain to descend and His sun to rise upon you, and ye worship, instead of Him, His works.

74Pois, quanto aos ídolos e imagens esculpidas do paganismo e a tudo o que na criação recebe vossa confiança e adoração, se neles houvesse sentimento e entendimento, pelos quais os adorais e honrais, seria justo que eles, que esculpistes, erguestes e firmastes com pregos para que não se abalassem, recebessem vosso favor.

74For the idols and graven images of paganism, and whatsoever of the creation in which ye have confidence and which ye worship, if there were in them feeling and understanding, for the sake of which ye worship and honour them, it would be right for them, which ye have engraven and established, and have firmly fixed with nails that they be not shaken, to receive your favour.

75Pois, se as criaturas estivessem cientes das honras que lhes prestais, clamariam e vos gritariam que não adorásseis vossos semelhantes, feitos e criados como vós; porque as criaturas feitas não devem ser adoradas, mas adorar seu Criador e glorificar Aquele que as criou. E, assim como Sua graça cobre os perversos aqui, Sua justiça se vingará dos infiéis ali. Pois vi que nesta cidade o paganismo, contrário a Deus, é muito abundante.

75For if the creatures were aware of your honours to them, they would cry, shouting to you, not to worship your fellows, which like yourselves are made and created; because that creatures made should not be worshipped; but that they should worship their Creator, and they should glorify Him who created them. And as His grace covers the wicked here, so His justice shall be avenged on the infidels there. For I saw in this city that it abounded greatly in paganism, which is against God.

76Quem é esse Nebo, ídolo feito que adorais, e Bel, a quem honrais? Eis que há entre vós os que adoram Bath Nical, como os habitantes de Harran, vossos vizinhos, e Taratha, como o povo de Mabug, e a águia, como os árabes; e também o sol e a lua, como os demais habitantes de Harran, que são como vós.

76Who is this Nebo, an idol made which ye worship, and Bel, which ye honour? Behold, there are those among you who adore Bath Nical, as the inhabitants of Harran your neighbours, and Taratha, as the people of Mabug, and the eagle, as the Arabians, also the sun and the moon,as the rest of the inhabitants of Harran, who are as yourselves.

77Não vos deixeis levar cativos pelos raios dos luminares e pela estrela brilhante; pois todo aquele que adora criaturas é maldito diante de Deus. Pois, embora haja criaturas maiores do que suas companheiras, são, ainda assim, conservas de suas companheiras, como vos disse. Porque é uma dor amarga, para a qual não há cura, que coisas feitas adorem coisas feitas e criaturas glorifiquem suas semelhantes.

77Be ye not led away captive by the rays of the luminaries and the bright star; for every one who worships creatures is cursed before God. For although there are among creatures such as are greater than their companions, yet they are fellow-servants of their companions, as I have said to you. For this is a bitter pain, for which there is not a cure, that things made should worship things made, and creatures should glorify their fellows.

78Pois, assim como não podem subsistir por seu próprio poder, mas pelo poder Daquele que as criou, também não podem ser adoradas juntamente com Ele nem honradas juntamente com Ele; pois isso é blasfêmia contra ambas as partes: contra as criaturas, quando são adoradas, e contra o Criador, quando criaturas estranhas à natureza de Sua existência são feitas participantes com Ele.

78For as they are not able to stand by the power of themselves, but by the power of Him who created them, so they are not able to be worshipped with Him, nor to be honoured with Him; for it is a blasphemy against both parties, against the creatures when they are worshipped, and against the Creator, when the creatures, who are strangers to the nature of His existence, are made partakers with Him.

79Pois toda a profecia dos Profetas e a pregação de nós, que viemos depois dos Profetas, consistem nisto: que as criaturas não sejam adoradas com o Criador e que os homens não se sujeitem ao jugo do paganismo corrupto. Não digo que não devam ser adoradas por serem visíveis; tudo o que foi feito é criatura, seja visível ou invisível. É uma perversidade horrível atribuir-lhe o glorioso nome da divindade.

79For all the prophecy of the Prophets, and the preaching of us who are after the Prophets, is this, that creatures should not be worshipped with the Creator, and that men should not bind themselves to the yoke of corrupt paganism. It is not because of the creatures being seen, I say, that they should not be worshipped; but everything which is made is a creature, whether visible or invisible. This is a horrible wickedness, to place the glorious name of divinity upon it.

80Pois não proclamamos nem adoramos criaturas como vós, mas o Senhor das criaturas. O terremoto que as fez tremer diante da Cruz testemunha que tudo o que foi feito depende e existe pelo poder de seu Criador, que existia antes dos mundos e das criaturas, cuja natureza é incompreensível, pois é invisível, e que, com Seu Pai, é santificado nas alturas, porque é Senhor e Deus desde a eternidade. Esta é nossa doutrina em todos os países e regiões.

80For not creatures, as you, we proclaim and worship; but the Lord of creatures. The earthquake, which made them tremble at the Cross, testifies that everything which is made depends on and exists by the power of its Maker, who was before worlds and creatures, whose nature is incomprehensible, in that His nature is invisible, and, with His Father, is sanctified in the heights above, for that He is Lord and God from eternity. This is our doctrine in every country and in every region.

81E assim fomos mandados a pregar aos que nos ouvem, não com violência, mas pelo ensino da verdade e pelo poder de Deus. E os milagres feitos em Seu nome testemunham que nossa fé é verdadeira e digna de crédito. Portanto, obedecei às minhas palavras e recebei o que disse e digo diante de vós; e, para que eu não tenha de exigir vossa morte, eis que vos advirto a ter muito cuidado. Recebei minhas palavras de modo digno e não as negligencieis.

81And so have we been commanded to preach to those who hear us, not violently, but by the teaching of the truth and by the power of God. And the miracles which were done in His name, testify concerning our faith, that it is true and to be believed. Be obedient, therefore, to my words, and receive that which I have said, and am saying before you; and that I may not require your death, behold, I warn you to be very cautious. Receive my words fitly, and do not neglect.

82Aproximai-vos de mim, vós que estais distantes de Cristo, e aproximai-vos de Cristo. E, em lugar dos sacrifícios e oferendas errôneos, oferecei-Lhe agora sacrifícios de ação de graças.

82Draw nigh to me ye my distant ones from Christ, and be near to Christ. And in the place Of erroneous sacrifices and oblations, offer now to Him the sacrifices of thanksgiving.

83Que é este grande altar que erguestes no meio desta cidade? E quem são esses que vão e vêm oferecendo sobre ele aos demônios e nele sacrificando aos diabos? Mas, se não conheceis as Escrituras, não vos ensina a própria natureza, por sua capacidade de ver, que vossos ídolos têm olhos e não veem? E vós, que vedes com os olhos, por não compreenderdes, sois também como os que não veem nem ouvem, e em vão ergueis a voz, ineficaz para ouvidos surdos.

83What is this great altar which ye have built in the midst of this city? and what are those going and coming offering upon it to demons, and sacrificing on it to devils? But if ye know not the Scriptures, doth not nature itself teach you, by its power of sight, that your idols have eyes and see not? And ye who see with eyes in that ye do not understand, ye are also as they who see not and hear not, and in vain you excite your voices, ineffective to deaf ears.

84Pois não se deve censurá-los por aquilo que não ouvem, porque por natureza são surdos e mudos. E vossa é a culpa a que se vincula a justiça, pois não quereis compreender nem mesmo o que vedes. Porque as densas trevas do erro, espalhadas sobre vossa mente, não vos permitem alcançar a luz celestial, que é a compreensão do conhecimento.

84For they are not to be complained of for that which they do not hear, because that by nature they are deaf and dumb. And the blame with which justice is involved is yours, for ye do not wish to understand, even that which ye see. For the thick darkness of error, which is spread over your mind, permits you not to acquire the heavenly light, which is the understanding of knowledge.

85Fugi, portanto, das coisas feitas e criadas, como vos disse, que só de nome são chamadas deuses, embora por natureza não o sejam; e aproximai-vos Daquele que por natureza é Deus desde a eternidade e para sempre, que não foi feito como vossos ídolos nem é criatura e obra de arte como as imagens de que vos vangloriais.

85Flee, therefore, from things made and created, as I have said unto you, that in name only are they called gods, though they are not gods in their nature; and draw near to Him, who in His nature is God from eternity and from everlasting, and is not made as your idols, and also not a creature, and a work of art as the images in which ye make your boast.

86Pois, embora tenha revestido este corpo, era Deus com Seu Pai; porque as obras da criação que tremeram quando Ele foi morto e se aterrorizaram com o sofrimento de Sua morte testemunham que Ele é Aquele que criou as obras da criação. Pois a terra não tremeu por um homem, mas por Aquele que a estabeleceu sobre as águas; e o sol não escureceu nos céus por um homem, mas por Aquele que fez os grandes luminares.

86Because that although He put on this body, He was God with His Father; for the works of creation, which trembled when He was slain, and were terrified by the suffering of His death, they testify that He is He who created the works of creation. For it was not for a man the earth shook, but for Him who established the earth upon the waters; and it was not for a man the sun became dark in the heavens, but for Him who made the great lights.

87E não foi por um homem que os retos e justos foram ressuscitados, mas por Aquele que desde o princípio deu poder sobre a morte. Nem foi por um homem que o véu do templo dos judeus se rasgou de alto a baixo, mas por Aquele que lhes disse: 'Eis que vossa casa ficará deserta.' Pois, se aqueles que O crucificaram não soubessem que Ele era o Filho de Deus, não teriam anunciado a desolação de sua cidade, nem atraído sobre si desgraças.

87And it was not by a man the righteous and the just were raised to life, but by Him who gave power over death from the beginning. Nor was it by a man the vail of the temple of the Jews was rent from the top to the bottom, but by Him who said to them, 'Behold, your house is left desolate.' For, behold, except they who crucified Him knew that He was the Son of God, they would not have proclaimed the desolation of their city, also they would not have brought down woes upon themselves.

88Pois, ainda que desejassem negligenciar essa confissão, as terríveis perturbações daquele tempo não lhes teriam permitido. Eis que também alguns filhos dos crucificadores se tornaram hoje pregadores e evangelistas, com os apóstolos, meus companheiros, por toda a Palestina, entre os samaritanos e por toda a terra dos filisteus. Os ídolos do paganismo também são desprezados, e a Cruz de Cristo é honrada. Povos e criaturas também confessam Deus, que Se fez homem.

88For even if they wished to neglect this confession, the terrible commotions which were at that time would not have permitted them. Behold also some of the children of the crucifiers have become at this day preachers and evangelists, with the Apostles my companions, in all the land of Palestine and among the Samaritans, and in all the country of the Philistines. The idols of paganism also are despised, and the Cross of Christ is honoured. Peoples and creatures also confess God, who became man.

89Se verdadeiramente, quando Jesus, nosso Senhor, estava na terra, crestes Nele como Filho de Deus e, antes mesmo de ouvirdes a palavra de Sua pregação, confessastes que Ele era Deus, agora que Ele subiu ao Pai, que vistes os sinais e maravilhas feitos em Seu nome e que ouvistes com vossos ouvidos a palavra de Seu Evangelho, nenhum de vós deve deixar surgir na mente dúvida de que a promessa de Sua bênção, que vos enviou, se cumprirá entre vós: «Bem-aventurados sois vós que crestes em Mim embora não Me tenhais visto; e, porque assim crestes em Mim, a cidade em que habitais será abençoada e o inimigo jamais prevalecerá contra ela.» Portanto, não vos afasteis de Sua fé; pois eis que ouvistes e vistes aquilo que testemunha Sua fé: que Ele é o Filho adorável, o Deus glorioso, o Rei triunfante e o Poder onipotente; e, por Sua verdadeira fé, o homem pode adquirir o olhar da verdadeira mente e perceber que a ira da justiça alcança todo aquele que adora criaturas.

89If truly when Jesus our Lord was upon earth ye believed in Him that He is the Son of God, and before that ye had heard the word of His preaching, confessed in Him that He is God; now that He has ascended to His Father, and ye have seen the signs and wonders which are done in His name, and the word of His Gospel ye have heard with your ears; not a man of you should let himself doubt in his mind how the promise of His blessing which He sent to you would have been established with you: "Blessed are ye who have believed in me, although ye have not seen me; and because ye have so believed in me the city in which ye dwell shall be blessed, and the enemy shall not prevail against it for ever." Do not, therefore, turn from His faith; for, behold, ye have heard and seen those things which bear witness to His faith, that He is the adorable Son, and is the glorious God, and is the triumphant King, and is the Omnipotent Power; and by His true faith a man is able to acquire the eye of the true mind, and to perceive that every one who worships creatures, the wrath of justice overtakes him.

90Pois tudo o que dizemos diante de vós, dizemo-lo conforme recebemos do dom de nosso Senhor, e ensinamos e mostramos como conservar vossa vida e não destruir vossos espíritos pelo erro do paganismo; porque a luz celestial raiou sobre a criação, e é Ele quem escolheu os antigos pais, os justos e os profetas, e lhes falou pela revelação do Espírito Santo.

90For everything which we say before you, we say as we have received of the gift of our Lord, and we teach and we show how to possess your life, and not destroy your spirits by the error of paganism; because that the heavenly light hath risen upon creation, and He it is, who hath chosen the ancient fathers and the just men and the Prophets, and hath spoken with them by the revelation of the Holy Spirit.

91Pois Ele é o Deus dos judeus que O crucificaram, e também os gentios errantes O adoram, embora não O conheçam; pois não há outro Deus no céu nem na terra, e eis que de todos os quatro cantos da terra sobe até Ele a confissão. Eis que agora vossos ouvidos ouviram o que antes não ouvíeis, e vossos olhos viram o que antes jamais víeis. Portanto, não sejais injustos com o que ouvistes e vistes.

91For He is the God of the Jews, who crucified Him, and the erring Gentiles also worship Him, though they know it not; because that there is no other God in heaven and in earth, and behold confession ascendeth up to Him from the four quarters of the earth. Behold now your ears have heard that which was not heard by you before, and behold, again, your eyes have seen that which was never seen by you before. Be ye not therefore unjust to that which ye have heard and seen.

92Fazei passar para longe de vós o espírito rebelde de vossos pais e libertai-vos do jugo do pecado que vos domina por meio das libações e dos sacrifícios diante das imagens esculpidas.

92Cause to pass from you the rebellious mind of your fathers, and free yourselves from the yoke of sin, which hath dominion over you by libations and sacrifices before graven images.

93Preocupai-vos com vossas vidas que perecem e com o vão curvar de vossa cabeça, e adquiri uma mente nova, que adore o Criador e não a coisa criada, na qual se representa a imagem da verdade e da veracidade, do Pai, do Filho e do Espírito Santo, quando credes e sois batizados nos três nomes gloriosos. Pois esta é nossa doutrina e nossa pregação. Pois não é em muitas coisas que se crê na verdade de Cristo.

93Let it be a care to you concerning your perishing lives, and concerning the vain bowing of your head, and acquire the new mind which worships the Maker and not the thing made, in which is represented the image of truth and verity, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, when ye believe and are baptized in the triple and glorious names. For this is our doctrine and our preaching. For it is not in many things that the truth of Christ is believed.

94E vós que estais dispostos a obedecer a Cristo, sabei que muitas vezes repeti minhas palavras diante de vós para que aprendêsseis e compreendêsseis tudo o que ouvis. E nisso nos alegraremos, como o lavrador em seu campo abençoado; e nosso Deus será glorificado por vosso arrependimento para com Ele. E, enquanto viverdes nisso, nós também, que assim vos aconselhamos, não seremos privados da bendita recompensa disso.

94And such of you as are willing to be obedient to Christ, know that many times I have repeated my words before you, that ye might learn and understand whatsoever ye hear. And we will rejoice in this, as a husbandman in his field which is blessed; and our God is glorified by your repentance towards Him. And as ye live in this, we also who counsel you thus will not be defrauded of the blessed reward of this.

95E porque confio que sois uma terra abençoada, segundo a vontade do Senhor Cristo, por isso, em lugar do pó de meus pés, que fomos mandados sacudir contra a cidade que não recebe nossas palavras, eis que hoje sacudo à porta de vossos ouvidos as palavras de meus lábios, nas quais se representa a vinda de Cristo, o que já aconteceu e o que está para acontecer, a ressurreição e revivificação de todos os homens, a separação que haverá entre os fiéis e os incrédulos e a bendita promessa das alegrias futuras que receberão os que creram em Cristo, adoraram Seu Pai excelso e O confessaram, bem como o Espírito de Sua divindade.

95And because I am confident that ye are a blessed land, according to the will of the Lord Christ, therefore for the dust of my feet which we have been commanded to shake off against the city that receiveth not our words; behold I shake off to-day at the door of your ears the words of my lips, in which the coming of Christ is represented, that which has been, and that which is about to be, and the resurrection and resuscitation of all men, and the separation which is to be between the faithful and unbelieving, and the blessed promise of future joys which they who have believed in Christ and worshipped His high Father, and confessed Him and the Spirit of His godhead, shall receive.

96E agora é justo encerrarmos nosso discurso de hoje e deixarmos que aqueles que receberam a palavra de Cristo permaneçam conosco, e também os que desejam associar-se a nós na oração; depois, que retornem às suas casas.»

96And now it is right for us to finish our present discourse, and let those who have received the word of Christ remain with us, and also those who wish to be associated, with us in prayer, and then let them go to their homes."

97E o apóstolo Addai alegrou-se com isso, ao ver que a multidão da população da cidade permaneceu com ele, e eram poucos os que não permaneceram naquele momento; e esses mesmos poucos, alguns dias depois, receberam suas palavras e creram no evangelho da pregação de Cristo.

97And Addai the Apostle rejoiced in this when he saw that the multitude of the population of the city remained with him, and there were few who did not remain at that time; and these same few, after a few days, received his words and believed in the gospel of the preaching of Christ.

98E, quando o apóstolo Addai disse essas coisas diante de toda a cidade de Edessa, e o rei Abgar viu que toda a cidade, homens e mulheres igualmente, se alegrava com sua doutrina e lhe dizia: «Cristo, que te enviou a nós, é verdadeiro e fiel», também ele se alegrou muito com isso, louvando a Deus, pois, conforme ouvira de Hannan, seu tabulário, acerca de Cristo, assim vira as maravilhosas obras poderosas que o apóstolo Addai fizera em nome de Cristo.

98And when Addai the Apostle had said these things before all the city of Edessa, and Abgar the king saw that all the city rejoiced in his doctrine, men and women equally, and were saying to him "Christ, who hath sent thee to us is true and faithful," and he also greatly rejoiced at this, praising God, that according to what he had heard from Hannan, his tabularius, concerning Christ, so he had seen the marvellous mighty works which Addai the Apostle had done in the name of Christ.

99E o rei Abgar também disse ao apóstolo Addai: Assim como enviei minha carta a Cristo, e assim como Ele também me enviou mensagem e hoje a recebi de ti mesmo, assim crerei todos os dias de minha vida e permanecerei nas mesmas coisas, exultante, porque sei que não há outro poder em cujo nome se realizem esses sinais e maravilhas, senão o poder de Cristo, a quem pregas em verdade e veracidade.

99And Abgar the king also said to Addai the Apostle, As I sent to Christ by my letter to Him; and as He also sent to me and I have received from thee thyself this day; so will I believe all the days of my life, and in the same things continue, exulting, because I know that there is no other power in the name of whom these signs and wonders are done, but by the power of Christ, whom thou preachest in truth and verity.

100E agora eu O adorarei, eu, Ma'nu, meu filho, Augustina e a rainha Shalmath. E agora, onde quiseres, constrói uma igreja, uma casa de reunião para os que creram e crerão em tuas palavras. E, como teu Senhor te ordenou, ministra em seus devidos tempos com confiança. Quanto aos que ensinam contigo este Evangelho, estou disposto a lhes entregar grandes dádivas, para que não tenham outro trabalho além do ministério.

100And now I will worship Him, I and Ma'nu, my son, and Augustina, and Shalmath the queen. And now, wherever thou wishest, build a church, a house of assembly for those who have believed, and shall believe in thy words. And, as commanded thee by thy Lord, minister thou at times with confidence. And those who are teachers with thee of this Gospel, I am prepared to deliver to them large gifts, that they may not have any other work with the ministry.

101Tudo o que te for necessário para as despesas da casa, também te darei sem exigir prestação de contas; tua palavra será poderosa e terá autoridade nesta cidade, e, sem depender de outro homem, terás permissão de entrar em minha presença em meu honroso palácio real.

101Everything also which is required by thee for the expenses of the house, I will give thee without taking account; thy word shall be powerful and have rule in this city, and without another man, have thou authority to enter into my presence in my royal palace of honour.

102E, quando o rei Abgar desceu a seu palácio real, ele e seus príncipes com ele — Abdu, Garmai, Shamshagram, Abubai, Meherdath e os demais companheiros — alegraram-se por tudo o que seus olhos haviam visto e seus ouvidos ouvido; e, com a alegria de seu coração, louvaram a Deus, que voltara suas mentes para Ele. 102And when Abgar the king went down to his royal palace, he rejoiced, he and his princes with him, Abdu and Garmai, and Shamshagram, and Abubai, and Meherdath, with the rest of their companions, at everything which their eyes had seen, and their ears had heard, and in the joy of their heart they also praised God, who had turned their mind to Him; they renounced the paganism in which they stood, and confessed the Gospel of Christ.

103E, quando Addai construiu uma igreja, eles e o povo da cidade nela ofereceram votos e oferendas, e ali adoraram todos os dias de sua vida.

103And when Addai had built a church, they offered in it vows and offerings, they and the people of the city, and there they worshipped all the days of their life.

104E Avida e Bar-kalba, que eram chefes e governantes e usavam diademas reais, aproximaram-se de Addai e lhe pediram que lhes contasse a história de Cristo: como, sendo Deus, Ele foi visto por eles como homem, e como puderam vê-Lo. E ele os esclareceu acerca de tudo isso, de tudo o que seus olhos haviam visto e de tudo o que seus ouvidos haviam ouvido Dele.

104And Avida and Bar-kalba who were chiefs and rulers, and clothed with royal headbands, drew near to Addai, and they asked Addai concerning the history of Christ, to tell them how that He being God was seen by them, as man, and how ye were able to see Him. And he satisfied them all concerning this, concerning all which their eyes had seen, and concerning all which their ears had heard of Him.

105E repetiu diante deles tudo o que os Profetas haviam dito a respeito Dele, e eles acolheram suas palavras com alegria e fé, e ninguém se levantou contra ele. Pois as obras gloriosas que fazia não permitiam que ninguém se levantasse contra ele.

105And every thing which the Prophets had said of Him, he repeated before them, and they received his words gladly and faithfully, and there was not a man who rose up against him. For the glorious things which he did permitted not a man to rise up against him.

106Shavida e Ebednebo, chefes dos sacerdotes daquela cidade, com seus companheiros Piroz e Dancu, quando viram os sinais que Addai fazia, correram e derrubaram os altares sobre os quais sacrificavam diante de Nebo e Bel, seus deuses, exceto o grande altar que ficava no meio da cidade; e clamaram dizendo que este era verdadeiramente o discípulo do distinto e glorioso Mestre de quem ouviram todas aquelas coisas que fizera na Palestina.

106Shavida and Ebednebo, chiefs of the priests of this city, with Piroz and Dancu their companions, when they saw the signs which he did, ran and threw down the altars upon which they sacrificed before Nebo and Bel their gods, except the great altar, which was in the midst of the city, and they cried out and said, that this is truly the disciple of the distinguished and glorious Master of whom we heard all those things, which He did in the country of Palestine.

107E Addai recebeu todos os que creram em Cristo e os batizou em nome do Pai, do Filho e do Espírito Santo. E os que costumavam adorar pedras e troncos sentaram-se a seus pés, aprendendo e sendo curados do flagelo da insensatez do paganismo. Também os judeus versados na Lei e nos Profetas, que comerciavam com sedas, foram persuadidos, tornaram-se discípulos e confessaram que Cristo é o Filho do Deus vivo.

107And all who believed in Christ, Addai received, and baptized them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And those who were accustomed to worship stones and stocks, sat at his feet, learning, and being corrected of the plague of the foolishness of paganism. The Jews also, conversant with the Law and the Prophets, who carried on merchandise in silks, were also persuaded and became disciples, and made confession in Christ, that He is the Son of the living God.

108Mas nem o rei Abgar nem o apóstolo Addai forçaram homem algum a crer em Cristo; pois, sem a força dos homens, a força dos sinais levou muitos a crer Nele. E toda esta terra da Mesopotâmia e todas as regiões ao redor acolheram sua doutrina com amor.

108But neither Abgar the king, nor Addai the Apostle pressed any man by force to believe in Christ; because without the force of man, the force of the signs compelled many to believe in Him. And all this country of Mesopotamia, and all the regions round about it received his doctrine with love.

109Mas Aggai fabricava as correntes e os diademas do rei, e Palut, Abshelama, Barsamya e os demais companheiros se uniram ao apóstolo Addai; ele os recebeu e os fez participantes de seu ministério. Liam o Antigo e o Novo Testamento, os Profetas e os Atos dos Apóstolos, e meditavam diariamente sobre eles.

109But Aggai made the chains and headbands of the king, and Palut and Abshelama and Barsamya with the rest of the others their companions, adhered to Addai the Apostle, and he received them and made them partakers with him in the ministry; they read in the Old Testament and the New, and the Prophets, and the Acts of the Apostles, every day they meditated on them.

110Ele lhes ordenou com cautela: «Sejam puros vossos corpos e santas vossas pessoas, como convém aos homens que estão diante do altar de Deus; e mantende-vos de fato muito longe do falso juramento, do homicídio perverso, do falso testemunho misturado ao adultério, dos feiticeiros para os quais não há misericórdia, das adivinhações, dos agouros, dos necromantes, dos destinos e dos horóscopos de que se vangloriam os caldeus errantes, e das estrelas e dos signos do Zodíaco em que confiam os insensatos.

110He commanded them cautiously, "Let your bodies be pure, and let your persons be holy; as is right for men who stand before the altar of God; and be ye indeed far removed from false swearing, and from wicked murder, and from false testimony, which is mixed with adultery, and from sorcerers with respect to whom there are no mercies, and from divinations, and soothsaying, and necromancers, and from fates, and nativities, in which the erring Chaldees boast themselves; and from stars, and the signs of the Zodiac, in which the foolish are confident.

111E afastai de vós a hipocrisia maligna, os subornos e os presentes pelos quais os inocentes são condenados. E, com este ministério para o qual fostes chamados, não tenhais outro serviço; pois o próprio Senhor é o serviço de vosso ministério todos os dias de vossa vida. Sede também diligentes em administrar o sinal do batismo, não ameis os ganhos deste mundo e ouvi o julgamento com justiça e verdade.

111And keep at a distance from you evil hypocrisy, and bribes, and gifts, by which the pure are condemned. And with this ministry to which ye have been called, let there not be for you another service; for the Lord Himself is the service of your ministry all the days of your life. Be ye also diligent to deliver the sign of baptism, and love ye not the gains of this world, but hearken ye to judgment with justice and truth.

112E não sejais pedra de tropeço para os cegos, para que o nome Daquele que abriu os olhos dos cegos, como vimos, não seja blasfemado por vossa causa. Portanto, que todos os que vos veem percebam que praticais tudo o que pregais e ensinais.» E eles ministravam com ele na igreja que Addai construíra pela palavra e ordem do rei Abgar, e eram sustentados pelos bens do rei e de seus nobres; parte desses bens levavam para a casa de Deus e parte para o sustento dos pobres.

112And be ye not a stumbling block to the blind, that the name of Him who opened the eyes of the blind, as we have seen, be not blasphemed through you. Let all, therefore, who see you, perceive that ye perform all which ye preach and teach. And they ministered with him in the church which Addai had built by the word and command of Abgar the king, and they were supplied from that which was the king's and his nobles; and some of them they brought for the house of God, and some for the nourishment of the poor.

113Mas uma grande multidão se reunia dia após dia e vinha à oração do culto e à leitura do Antigo e do Novo Testamento e do Diatessaron; e criam na revivificação dos mortos e sepultavam seus mortos na esperança da ressurreição.

113But a large multitude of people assembled day by day and came to the prayer of the service, and to the reading of the Old and New Testament, of the Diatessaron, and they believed in the revival of the dead, and they buried their dead in the hope of the resurrection.

114Observavam também as festas da Igreja em suas épocas e, todos os dias, eram constantes nas vigílias da Igreja; igualmente praticavam obras de caridade para com os enfermos e os sãos, segundo a instrução que Addai lhes dera.

114They also observed the festivals of the Church in their times, and every day they were constant in the vigils of the Church, and they likewise performed acts of charity to the sick and those who were whole, according to the instruction of Addai to them.

115E nos lugares ao redor da cidade foram construídas igrejas, e muitos receberam dele a imposição das mãos do sacerdócio. Assim também orientais com aparência de mercadores passaram à terra dos romanos para ver os sinais que Addai fazia; e aqueles dentre eles que se tornaram discípulos receberam deles a imposição das mãos do sacerdócio e, em sua própria terra dos assírios, ensinaram os filhos de seu povo e construíram ali, em segredo, casas de oração, por causa do perigo vindo dos adoradores do fogo e da água.

115And in places round about the city churches were built, and the hand of the priesthood many received from him: So also orientals with the appearance of merchants passed into the country of the Romans to see the signs which Addai did, and those of them who became disciples, received from them the hand of the priesthood, and in their own country of the Assyrians they taught the sons of their people, and houses of prayer they built there secretly, because of the danger arising from the worshippers of fire and the adorers of water.

116Mas Nersai, rei dos assírios, ao ouvir falar do que o apóstolo Addai fizera, mandou dizer ao rei Abgar: Ou envia-me o homem que fez esses sinais contigo, para que eu o veja e ouça seu discurso, ou envia-me um relato de tudo o que o viste fazer em tua cidade.

116But Nersai, the king of the Assyrians, when he had heard of these things which Addai the Apostle had done, he sent to Abgar, the king; either send me the man who hath done these signs with thee, that I may see him and hear his discourse, or send me an account of all these things which thou hast seen him do in thy city.

117E Abgar escreveu a Nersai e lhe deu a conhecer toda a história dos feitos de Addai, do princípio ao fim, sem omitir coisa alguma em sua carta.

117And Abgar wrote to Nersai and made him acquainted with the whole history of the affair of Addai from the beginning to the end, and he left not any thing which he did not write to him.

118Mas, quando Nersai ouviu o que lhe haviam escrito, ficou maravilhado e espantado. O rei Abgar, porém, como não podia atravessar a terra dos romanos nem ir à Palestina matar os judeus por terem crucificado Cristo, escreveu e enviou uma carta a Tibério César, nestes termos: «Abgar, o rei, a nosso senhor Tibério César: paz.

118But when Nersai heard those things which were written to him, he wondered and was astonished. But Abgar the king, because that he was not able to pass to the country of the Romans, and to go to Palestine and slay the Jews, because that they had crucified Christ, wrote a letter and sent to Tiberius Caesar, writing it thus: "Abgar, the king, to our Lord Tiberius Caesar, peace.

119Sabendo que nada está oculto a Vossa Majestade, escrevo para informar a vossa temível e grande soberania que os judeus sob vosso domínio, que habitam a Palestina, reuniram-se e crucificaram o Cristo sem que Ele tivesse culpa digna de morte, enquanto realizava diante deles sinais e maravilhas e lhes mostrava obras poderosas e sinais; a ponto de ressuscitar mortos diante deles.

119Knowing that not anything is hidden from thy Majesty, I write and inform thy dread and great sovereignty, that the Jews, who are under thy hand, who dwell in the country of Palestine, assembled themselves together and crucified the Christ without any fault worthy of death, when he was doing before them signs and wonders, and showed them mighty works and signs; so that even the dead He raised to life for them.

120E, quando O crucificaram, o sol escureceu, a terra tremeu e todas as criaturas estremeceram; e, como que por si mesma, toda a criação e seus habitantes se abalaram diante desse feito. E agora Vossa Majestade sabe o que é justo ordenar contra o povo dos judeus que fez essas coisas.»

120And at the time they crucified Him, the sun became darkened and the earth shook, and all creatures trembled, and as if of themselves, at this deed all creation quailed, and its inhabitants. And now thy majesty knows what is right to command against the people of the Jews, who did these things."

121E Tibério César escreveu ao rei Abgar e lhe enviou esta resposta: «Recebi tua carta de fidelidade a mim, que foi lida diante de mim. Quanto ao que os judeus fizeram com a cruz, o governador Pilatos também escreveu e informou a Olbino, meu procônsul, acerca dessas coisas que me escreveste.

121And Tiberius Caesar wrote and sent to Abgar the king, and thus he wrote to him: "The letter of thy fidelity to me, I have received, and it was read before me. With respect to that which the Jews have done with the cross, Pilate the governor hath also written, and informed Olbinus, my pro-consul, of these things which thou hast written to me.

122Mas, como a guerra contra os espanhóis que se rebelaram contra mim prossegue neste momento, ainda não pude vingar esse assunto; estou, porém, preparado, quando houver tranquilidade, para apresentar legalmente uma acusação contra os judeus, que não agiram conforme a lei.

122But because of the war of the Spaniards who have rebelled against me is going on at this time, therefore I have not been able to avenge this matter; but I am prepared, when I have quietness, to make a charge legally against the Jews, who have not acted legally.

123E por isso, quanto a Pilatos, a quem eu nomeara governador ali, enviei outro em seu lugar e o destituí com desonra, porque se afastou da lei e fez a vontade dos judeus, e crucificou Cristo para agradar aos judeus; segundo o que ouço a respeito deles, em vez da cruz da morte, convinha que Ele fosse honrado e era justo que eles O adorassem, sobretudo porque viram com os próprios olhos tudo o que Ele fez.

123And because of this, as to Pilate, who was made by me governor there, I have sent another in his place, and I have dismissed him with disgrace, because that he departed from the law, and did the will of the Jews, and he crucified Christ for the gratification of the Jews, who according to that which I hear of them, instead of the cross of death, it was fitting that He should be honoured, and it was right He should be worshipped by them, especially as they saw with their eyes all which He did.

124Mas tu, conforme tua fidelidade a mim, tua verdadeira aliança e a de teus pais, fizeste bem em me escrever assim.»

124But thou, according to thy fidelity to me and thy true compact and that of thy fathers, hast done well to write to me thus."

125E o rei Abgar recebeu Aristides, que Tibério César lhe enviara, e respondeu, mandando-o de volta com presentes honrosos, dignos daquele que o enviara. E ele partiu de Edessa e foi a Ticnutha, onde se encontrava Cláudio, o segundo depois do rei; dali foi também a Artica, onde estava Tibério César. Mas Gaio guardava as regiões ao redor do imperador.

125And Abgar the king, received Aristides, who was sent to him by Tiberius Caesar, and he replied, sent him back with honourable gifts, which were suitable for him, who had sent him to him. And he departed from Edessa, and went to Ticnutha, where was Claudius the second, from the king, and from there also he went to Artica, where was Tiberius Caesar. But Gaius guarded the regions, which were round about the Emperor.

126E o próprio Aristides relatou diante de Tibério as obras poderosas que Addai realizara perante o rei Abgar. E, quando teve descanso da guerra, Tibério mandou matar alguns dos chefes dos judeus que estavam na Palestina. E, quando o rei Abgar soube disso, alegrou-se muito por terem os judeus recebido castigo, como era justo.

126And Aristides himself also recounted before Tiberius the mighty works which Addai did before Abgar the king. And when he had rest from the war, he sent, slew some of the chiefs of the Jews, who were in Palestine. And when Abgar the king heard, he greatly rejoiced at this, that the Jews had received punishment, as it was right.

127E, alguns anos depois de o apóstolo Addai construir a igreja em Edessa, provê-la de tudo o que lhe convinha e ensinar muitos habitantes da cidade, construiu igrejas também nas aldeias, tanto distantes como próximas, terminou-as e adornou-as, nomeou nelas diáconos e presbíteros, instruiu nelas os que deveriam ler as Escrituras e ensinou as ordens do ministério, dentro e fora.

127And some years after Addai the Apostle had built the church in Edessa, and furnished it with everything which was suitable for it, and had taught many of the population of the city, also in the other villages, both those which were distant, and those which were near, he built churches, and completed and ornamented them, and appointed in them deacons and elders, and taught in them those who should read the Scriptures, and the orders of the ministry within and without he taught.

128Depois de todas essas coisas, adoeceu da enfermidade pela qual deixou este mundo. E chamou Aggai diante de toda a congregação da igreja, trouxe-o para perto e o fez dirigente e governante em seu lugar. Quanto a Palut, que era diácono, fez dele um presbítero; e de Abshelama, que era escriba, fez um diácono.

128After all these things he became ill with the disease, by which he departed from this world. And he called Aggai before all the congregation of the church, and he brought him near, and made him governor and ruler in his place. And concerning Palut, who was a deacon, he made him an elder, and of Abshelama, who was a scribe, he made him a deacon.

129E, quando os nobres e chefes estavam reunidos e de pé junto dele — Bar-kalba, Bar-Zati, Marihab, filho de Barshemesh, Sennac, filho de Avida, Peroz, filho de Patrício, e os demais companheiros —, o apóstolo Addai lhes disse: «Sabeis e testemunhais, todos os que me ouvis, que tudo o que vos preguei e ensinei e que ouvistes de mim, assim também me conduzi entre vós e assim me vistes agir; pois nosso Senhor nos ordenou que tudo o que pregamos por palavras diante do povo também façamos por obras diante de todos.

129And when the nobles and chiefs were assembled and stood by him, Bar-kalba and Bar-Zati, and Marihab, the son of Barshemesh, and Sennac, son of Avida, and Peroz, son of Patricius, with the rest of their companions, Addai the Apostle said to them: "Ye know, and ye testify, all of you who hear me, that everything which I have preached to you and taught you, and ye have heard from me, so have I conducted myself among you, and ye have seen also in works, because that thus our Lord commanded us that whatsoever we preach in words before the people, we in work should do before every man.

130E, conforme as ordenanças e leis estabelecidas em Jerusalém, pelas quais também se regiam os apóstolos, meus companheiros, assim também vós não vos afasteis delas nem lhes retireis coisa alguma; pois eu mesmo me guiei por elas entre vós e não me desviei nem para a direita nem para a esquerda, para não me tornar alheio à salvação prometida, reservada aos que por elas se guiam.

130And according to the ordinances and laws which were appointed in Jerusalem, and by which also the Apostles, my companions, were governed, so also ye, do not turn aside from them, and do not take away anything from them, as I myself also have been guided by them among you, and have not turned aside from them to the right hand, or to the left, that I might not become strange to the promised salvation, which is reserved for those who are guided by them.

131Portanto, cuidai deste ministério que exerceis e nele permanecei com temor e tremor, ministrando todos os dias. Não ministreis com costumes que tragam desprezo, mas com a prudência da fé; e que os louvores de Cristo não cessem em vossa boca, nem se aproxime de vós o cansaço na oração nos tempos estabelecidos.

131Take heed, therefore, to this ministry which ye hold, and with fear and trembling abide ye in it, and minister every day. Minister not in it with habits bringing contempt, but with the prudence of faith; and the praises of Christ, let them not cease from your mouth, and let not weariness in prayer at the stated times draw near to you.

132Guardai a verdade que possuís, o ensino da verdade que recebestes e a herança da salvação que vos confio, porque sereis procurados por Ele diante do tribunal de Cristo, quando Ele pedir contas aos pastores e superiores e receber dos mercadores Seu dinheiro com o acréscimo dos lucros.

132Take heed to the truth, which ye hold, and to the teaching of the truth, which ye have received, and to the inheritance of salvation, which I commend to you, because before the judgment-seat of Christ you will be sought out by Him, when He taketh account with the pastors and superiors, and when He taketh His money from merchants with the increase of gains.

133Pois Ele é o filho do rei, que vai receber um reino, regressar e vir realizar a ressurreição de todos os homens; então Se assentará no trono da justiça e julgará os mortos e os vivos, como nos disse. Não se feche o olho secreto de vossa mente à altura celestial, para que vossas faltas não se multipliquem no caminho em que não há faltas, nem erro abominável em suas veredas. Buscai os perdidos, visitai os que erram e alegrai-vos com os que são encontrados.

133For He is the king's son, and goes to receive a kingdom, and to return, and to come and make a resurrection for all men; and then He sitteth on the throne of righteousness, and judgeth the dead and the living, as He hath said to us. Let not the secret eye of your mind from the height above be closed, that your offences may not multiply in the way in which there are no offences; nor abominable error in its ways. Seek ye those that are lost, and visit those that err, and rejoice ye in those that are found.

134Enfaixai os feridos e vigiai as ovelhas gordas, porque as ovelhas de Cristo serão requeridas de vossas mãos. Não busqueis honra passageira; pois o pastor que espera ser honrado por seu rebanho deixa seu rebanho em situação muito, muito ruim.

134Bind up those that are bruised, and be ye watchful of the fatlings, because at your hands will the sheep of Christ be required. Look ye not to passing honour, for the shepherd that looketh to be honoured by his flock, badly, badly with respect to him does his flock stand.

135Seja grande vosso cuidado com os cordeirinhos, pois seus anjos contemplam a face do Pai invisível; e não sejais pedra de tropeço diante dos cegos, mas os que desobstruem o caminho e a senda em terra difícil, entre os judeus crucificadores e os gentios errantes; pois apenas com esses dois grupos haverá combate para vós, a fim de mostrar a verdade da fé que possuís. Também quando estiverdes em silêncio, vossa aparência modesta e honrosa lutará por vós contra os que odeiam a verdade e amam a falsidade.

135Let your solicitude for the young lambs be great, for their angels behold the face of the invisible Father, and be ye not a stone of stumbling before the blind, but clearers of the way and the path in a difficult country, among the Jews, the crucifiers, and the erring heathen; for with these two parties only is there war for you, in order to show the truth of the faith, which ye hold; also when ye are quiet, your modest and honourable appearance will be fighting for you with those who hate truth and love falsehood.

136Não maltrateis os pobres diante dos ricos, pois o severo peso de sua pobreza já lhes basta. Não vos deixeis seduzir pelos pensamentos odiosos de Satanás, para que não sejais despidos da fé de que vos revestistes, pois a incredulidade é mais fácil que a fé, assim como o pecado é mais fácil que a justiça.

136Be ye not smiters of the poor before the rich, for the severe infliction of their poverty is sufficient for them. Be ye not beguiled with the hateful cogitations of Satan, that ye be not stripped naked of the faith that ye have put on, for unbelief is easier than faith, as sin is easier than righteousness.

137Guardai-vos, portanto, daqueles que crucificaram, para que não sejais amigos deles nem responsáveis com aqueles cujas mãos estão cheias do sangue de Cristo; e sabeis e testemunhais que tudo o que dizemos e ensinamos acerca da história de Cristo está escrito no Livro dos Profetas e guardado entre eles.

137Take heed, therefore, of those that crucified, that ye be not friends to them, that ye be not responsible with them whose hands are full of the blood of Christ; and ye know, and ye bear witness, that everything which we say and teach of the history of Christ, is written in the Book of the Prophets, and deposited with them.

138E suas palavras testemunham nosso ensino acerca do julgamento, do sofrimento, da ressurreição e da ascensão de Cristo; mas eles não sabem que, ao se levantarem contra nós, se levantam contra as palavras dos Profetas, e, assim como em vida perseguiram os Profetas, também agora, depois da morte deles, perseguem a verdade escrita nos Profetas.

138And their words bear witness to our teaching concerning the judgment, and suffering, and resurrection, and ascension of Christ; but they know not, that when they rise against us they rise against the words of the Prophets, and as in their lives they persecuted the Prophets, so also now, since their death, they persecute the truth, which is written in the Prophets.

139Também vos guardai dos gentios que adoram o sol e a lua, Bel e Nebo e os demais que chamam deuses, embora por natureza não sejam deuses. Fugi, portanto, deles, porque adoram criaturas e coisas feitas.

139Again, take ye heed of the heathen, who worship the sun and the moon, and Bel and Nebo, and the rest of those which they call gods, though they are not gods in their nature. Flee ye, therefore, from them, because that they worship creatures and things made.

140E, como vos foi dito antes, todo o propósito pelo qual nosso Senhor veio ao mundo foi que as criaturas deixassem de ser adoradas e honradas, pois subsistem por um aceno de seu Criador; e, quando Ele quer, dissolve-as e faz que deixem de existir, e elas se tornam como se não fossem. Pois a vontade Daquele que criou as criaturas libertou os homens do jugo do paganismo das criaturas.

140And as reported to you before, the whole object for which our Lord came into the world was that creatures might not again be worshipped and honoured, because they exist by the nod of their Creator; and when He wishes, He dissolves and makes them cease, and they are as though they are not. For the will of Him, who created the creatures, freed men from the yoke of the paganism of the creatures.

141Pois sabeis que todo aquele que adora os servos de um rei juntamente com o rei encontra a morte pela espada em sua adoração. Não procureis as coisas secretas nem investigueis as coisas ocultas escritas nos livros santos que possuís. Não vos façais juízes das palavras dos Profetas. Lembrai-vos e considerai que elas foram ditas pelo Espírito de Deus; e quem acusa os Profetas acusa e julga o Espírito de Deus.

141For ye know that every one who worships the servants of a king with the king, the death of the sword findeth him in his worship. Be ye not searching for secret things, and inquiring after hidden things, which are written in the holy books that ye possess. Be ye not judges concerning the words of the Prophets. Remember and consider that by the Spirit of God they are said; and he who accuses the Prophets, accuses and judges the Spirit of God.

142Longe esteja isso de vós! Pois os caminhos do Senhor são retos, e os justos neles andam sem tropeçar; mas os infiéis neles tropeçam, porque não têm o olho secreto da mente secreta, que não necessita de perguntas nas quais não há proveito, mas perda. Lembrai-vos do julgamento ameaçador dos Profetas e da palavra de nosso Senhor, que define as palavras deles: o Senhor julga pelo fogo, e todos os homens são provados por ele.

142May this be far from you I Because the ways of the Lord are straight, and the righteous walk in them without stumbling; but the infidels stumble in them; because that they have not the secret eye of the secret mind, which has no need of questions in which there is no profit, but loss. Remember the menacing judgment of the Prophets, and the word of our Lord, which defines their words, that the Lord judgeth by fire, and all men are tried by it.

143Portanto, como viajantes e peregrinos que pernoitam e regressam cedo às suas casas, assim também considerai este mundo: daqui partis para os lugares que o Filho foi preparar para todos os que deles são dignos. Quanto aos reis dos países, seus exércitos saem adiante deles e lhes preparam uma morada honrosa; mas este nosso Rei, eis que Ele foi preparar para Seus adoradores moradas benditas onde possam habitar.

143Wherefore, as wayfarers and sojourners, who tarry for a night and return early to their homes, so may you yourselves consider concerning this world, that from here ye go forth to the places where the Son went to prepare for every one worthy of them. As to kings of countries, their armies go forth before them, and prepare for them a dwelling-house for their honour; but this King of ours, behold, He is gone to prepare for His worshippers blessed mansions in which they may dwell.

144Pois Deus não criou em vão os filhos dos homens, mas para que O adorem e glorifiquem aqui e ali para sempre. Assim como Ele não passa, também os que O glorificam não cessam. Portanto, também minha morte, pela doença que me prende e me faz jazer, seja considerada aos vossos olhos como um sono noturno.

144For it was not in vain God created the children of men; but that they might worship and glorify Him. here and there for ever. As He passeth not away, so those glorifying Him cease not. Wherefore my death also, with the disease of which I am bound and lie; as a sleep of the night, let it be esteemed in your eyes.

145E lembrai-vos de que, pelo sofrimento do Filho, a Morte, que arrebata os filhos dos homens, passou e cessou; e de Satanás, que leva muitos ao pecado e guerreia contra os verdadeiros para que fiquem sem a verdade.

145And remember that with the suffering of the Son, Death, which snatches away the children of men, passed away and ceased; and Satan, who causes many to sin and makes war with the true, that they may be without truth.

146E, assim como o lavrador que põe a mão no arado não pode fazer sulcos retos diante de si se olhar para trás, também vós que fostes chamados a este dom do ministério, tende cuidado de não vos inquietardes com as coisas deste mundo, para que por acaso não sejais impedidos quanto àquilo para que fostes chamados.

146And as a husbandman who puts his hand to the ploughshare, if he looks behind, the furrows before him cannot be straight; so also ye who have been called to this gift of the ministry, be ye cautious, that ye do not trouble yourselves with the things of this world, lest by chance ye be impeded as to that to which ye have been called.

147Quanto aos príncipes e juízes que abraçaram esta fé, amai-os, mas não finjais em coisa alguma; e, se pecarem, repreendei-os com justiça. Mostrai-lhes abertamente vossa retidão, para que se corrijam e não voltem a agir segundo a própria vontade. Tende essa solicitude todos os dias de vossa vida, para que todos busqueis as coisas honestas, como também aconselhais os outros a respeito delas; pois nelas os homens encontram sua vida diante de Deus.

147As to princes and judges, who have embraced this faith, be ye loving them, although do not simulate in any thing, and if they sin, ye reprove them with justice. Ye shall show them openly your rectitude, that they may be corrected so as not again to conduct themselves after their own will. This solicitude ye shall have all the days of your life, that all of you may run after honest things, as ye also counsel others with respect to them; for in these things men find their life before God.

148Mas a Lei, os Profetas e o Evangelho, que ledes todos os dias diante do povo, e as Epístolas de Paulo, que Simão Pedro nos enviou da cidade de Roma, e os Atos dos doze Apóstolos, que João, filho de Zebedeu, nos enviou de Éfeso: lede esses Livros nas igrejas de Cristo e, junto deles, não leiais outros, pois não há outros em que esteja escrita a verdade que possuís, senão esses livros, que vos conservam na fé para a qual fostes chamados.

148But the Law, and the Prophets, and the Gospel, which ye read every day before the people, and the Epistles of Paul, which Simon Peter sent us from the city of Rome, and the Acts of the twelve Apostles, which John, the son of Zebedee, sent us from Ephesus; these Books read ye in the churches of Christ, and with these read not any others, as there is not any other in which the truth that ye hold is written, except these books, which retain you in the faith to which ye have been called.

149E nosso senhor, o rei Abgar, e seus honrados nobres, que ouviram o que hoje disse diante de vós, bastam-me como testemunhas depois de minha morte de que preguei diligentemente a doutrina de nosso Senhor diante de todos os homens e de que nada adquiri no mundo com Sua palavra.

149And our lord Abgar the king, and his honoured nobles, who have heard that which I have spoken before you to day are sufficient to be for me witnesses after my death, that I have diligently preached the doctrine of our Lord before every man, and that I have not acquired anything with His word in the world.

150Pois Sua palavra, pela qual me tornei rico, bastou-me, e por ela enriqueci a muitos; pois ela me eleva neste caminho pelo qual parto diante de Cristo, que me mandou chamar, para que por ele eu vá até Ele.

150For His word by which I have become rich was sufficient for me, and I have made by it many rich; for it lifts me up in this way in which I go forth before Christ, who has sent after me, that I should go by it to Him.

151Pois sabeis o que vos disse: «Todas as almas dos homens que deixam este corpo não morrem, mas vivem e se levantam, e têm moradas e um lugar de repouso, porque o entendimento e a inteligência da alma não cessam, pois nela está representada a imagem de Deus, que não morre. Porque ela não é como o corpo sem sensibilidade, que não percebe a odiosa corrupção que o acometeu.

151For ye know that which I have said to you, "That all the souls of men, which depart from this body, die not; but they live and rise, and have mansions, and a dwelling-place of rest, for the understanding and the intelligence of the soul do not cease, because the image of God is represented in it, which dieth not. For it is not as the body without feeling which perceives not the odious corruption which has come upon it.

152Ela não pode receber recompensa e retribuição sem ele (o corpo), porque o trabalho não foi só dela, mas também do corpo em que habitou. Mas os rebeldes que não conhecem a Deus então se arrependem em vão.

152Eeward and recompense it is not able to receive without it (the body); because that labour was not its only, but also of the body in which it dwelt. But the rebellious who know not God, they become penitent then to no purpose.

153A vós, porém, que sois de Cristo e sobre os quais foi posto Seu nome glorioso, que vos governa, Ele vos dirigirá pelo caminho da verdade, no qual andareis e chegareis àquilo que foi prometido e guardado para os que não se afastam Dele, mas permanecem conforme o chamado que receberam de nosso Senhor.»

153Ye, indeed, who are of Christ, whose glorious name is placed upon you, and ruleth, He will direct you in the way of truth, in which, ye shall go and shall arrive at and attain to that which is promised and kept for those who depart not from Him; but abide according to what they were called to by our Lord.

154E, quando o apóstolo Addai disse essas palavras, cessou de falar e permaneceu em silêncio. Então Aggai, fabricante das correntes do rei, Palut, Abshelama e os demais companheiros responderam e disseram ao apóstolo Addai: «O próprio Cristo testemunhou que te enviou a nós, e tu nos ensinaste a verdadeira fé e nos fizeste possuir a verdadeira vida. Assim como ouvimos de ti e recebemos durante todo o tempo em que estiveste conosco, assim permaneceremos todos os dias de nossa vida.

154And when Addai the Apostle had said this word, he ceased and was silent. And Aggai, maker of the king's chains, and Palut, and Abshelama, with the rest of their companions, answered and said to Addai the Apostle, "Christ Himself has testified that He sent thee to us, and thou hast taught us the true faith, and hast made us possess the true life. As we have heard from thee and received, all this time thou hast been with us, so we abide all the days of our life.

155E fugiremos da adoração das coisas feitas e criadas que nossos pais adoravam, e não nos misturaremos com os judeus crucificadores; e esta herança que recebemos de ti não a deixaremos, mas com ela partiremos deste mundo. E, no dia de nosso Senhor, diante do tribunal da justiça, Ele nos restituirá esta herança, como nos disseste.

155And from the worship of things made and created, which our fathers worshipped, we flee, and with the Jews, the crucifiers we will not mix ourselves; and this inheritance, which we have received from thee, we do not let go, but with it we will depart from this world. And in the day of our Lord, before the judgment-seat of righteousness, there will He return to us this inheritance as that thou hast said to us.

156E, depois de ditas essas coisas, o rei Abgar levantou-se com seus príncipes e todos os nobres de seu reino e foi ao seu palácio; e todos se afligiam por Addai, pois estava morrendo.

156And when these things had been said, Abgar the king, arose, he and his princes, and all the nobles of his kingdom, and he went to his own palace, when all of them grieved over him, for he was dying.

157E enviou-lhe vestes honrosas e caras para seu sepultamento; mas, quando Addai as viu, mandou-lhe dizer: «Em toda a minha vida nada recebi de ti, e não falsearei em mim a palavra que Cristo me disse: Não recebais coisa alguma de homem nem adquirais coisa alguma neste mundo.» E três dias depois de o apóstolo Addai dizer essas coisas e ouvir e receber, diante de todos os nobres, o testemunho dos filhos de seu ministério acerca da doutrina de sua pregação, ele deixou este mundo. Era o quinto dia da semana, o décimo quarto dia do mês de Eyor. E toda a cidade ficou em grande tristeza e amarga dor; não somente os cristãos choraram por ele, mas também os judeus e pagãos que ali viviam.

157And he sent to him honourable and costly garments, in which he should be buried; and when Addai saw them, he sent word to him, that not in my life have I taken from thee anything, and I will not falsify in me the word of Christ, which He said to me, "Receive not anything from man, arid acquire not anything in this world." And after three other days, that these things were said by Addai the Apostle, and he had heard and received the testimony of the doctrine of his preaching from the sons of his ministry, before all the nobles, he departed from this world, and it was the fifth day of the week, in the fourteenth of the month Eyor. And the whole city was in great sorrow and bitter pain; not only Christians sorrowed for Him, but also Jews and Pagans, who were in this city.

158Mas o rei Abgar, mais do que qualquer outro homem, lamentou sua morte, ele e os príncipes de seu reino. E, na dor de sua alma, desprezou e abandonou naquele dia a honra de seu reino; e, com lágrimas de luto, chorou por ele junto com todos. E todo o povo da cidade que o viu se admirou de quanto sofria por causa de Addai.

158But king Abgar more than any man sorrowed for him, he and the princes of his kingdom. And in the grief of his mind he despised and forsook the honour of his kingdom on that day; and with mournful tears he wept over him with every man. And all the people of the city, who saw him, wondered at how much he suffered because of him.

159E, com honra grande e excelsa, levou-o e sepultou-o como a um dos príncipes quando morre, colocando-o num grande sepulcro de lavra ornamental onde jaziam os da casa de Aryu, antepassados do pai do rei Abgar. Ali o depositou cuidadosamente, com pesar e grande tristeza.

159And with great and excellent honour he carried and buried him, as one of the princes, when he dies, and he placed him in a great sepulchre of ornamental sculpture, in which those of the house of Aryu, the ancestors of the father of king Abgar, were placed. There he placed him carefully with grief and great sorrow.

160E todo o povo da igreja ia ali de tempos em tempos e orava diligentemente, e comemorava sua morte ano após ano, segundo a ordem e a instrução que recebera do apóstolo Addai e segundo a palavra de Aggai, que era seu guia e dirigente e o sucessor de sua cátedra depois dele, pela imposição das mãos do sacerdócio que dele recebera diante de todos.

160And all the people of the church went from time to time, and prayed there diligently, and the commemoration of his death they made from year to year, according to the command and instruction which was received by them from Addai the Apostle, and according to the word of Aggai, who was himself the guide and ruler and the successor of his chair after him, by the hand of the priesthood, which he had received from him before every man.

161E ele também, pela imposição das mãos que recebera, constituiu sacerdotes e guias em toda esta terra da Mesopotâmia. Pois também eles receberam, ouviram e acolheram sua palavra como a do apóstolo Addai, como bom e fiel herdeiro do apóstolo do adorável Cristo. Mas não recebeu prata nem ouro de ninguém, nem se aproximaram dele os presentes dos príncipes. Pois, em vez de ouro e prata, enriqueceu a Igreja de Cristo com as almas dos fiéis.

161And he also by the hand from which he received made priests and guides in all this country of Mesopotamia. For they also, as of Addai the Apostle, thus took his word and heard and received, as a good and faithful heir of the Apostle of the adorable Christ. But silver and gold he took not from man, and the gifts of the princes approached him not. For instead of gold and silver he enriched the Church of Christ with the souls of the faithful.

162Mas todos os chefes, homens e mulheres, eram modestos e decorosos, santos e puros, e viviam sós e modestamente, sem mancha, velando de modo digno pelo ministério, cuidando dos pobres e visitando os enfermos; pois suas saídas eram louvadas por aqueles que os viam, e sua conversa recebia glória dos estrangeiros. Assim, até os sacerdotes do templo de Nebo e Bel compartilhavam com eles a honra em todo tempo, por sua aparência honrada, sua fala verdadeira, a confiança que possuíam e sua liberdade, que não era escrava da avareza nem estava sujeita à censura.

162But all the chiefs of men and women were modest and decorous, and they were holy and pure, and they dwelt singly and modestly without spot, in watchfulness of the ministry decorously, in their carefulness for the poor, in their visitations to the sick; for their goings forth were full of praise from those who saw, and their conversation was covered with glory from strangers; so that even the priests of the temple of Nebo and Bel divided with them the honour at all times, by their honourable aspect, by their truthful discourse, by the confidence which they possessed, and by their freedom, which was not enslaved to greediness, and was not in bondage under blame.

163Pois todos os que os viam corriam ao seu encontro para saudá-los com honra, porque até sua simples visão espalhava paz entre os observadores. Suas palavras de paz se estendiam como redes sobre os rebeldes quando estes entravam no aprisco da verdade e da veracidade. Pois ninguém os via e se envergonhava deles, porque nada faziam que não fosse justo e conveniente; e, por isso, seus rostos se mostravam francos ao pregarem sua doutrina a todos.

163For every one who saw them ran to meet them, that he might honourably salute them; because even the sight of them spread peace over the beholders. For their words of peace were spread like nets over the rebellious, when they were entering the fold of truth and verity. For there was no man who saw them, and was ashamed of them; because they did not anything which was not just, and which was not becoming, and in consequence of this their countenances were open in the preaching of their doctrine to every man.

164Pois tudo o que diziam e ordenavam aos outros demonstravam também por obras em si mesmos; e, entre os ouvintes que viam que suas obras correspondiam às palavras, muitos se tornavam seus discípulos sem persuasão e confessavam Cristo, o Rei, louvando a Deus, que os voltara para Ele.

164For whatsoever they said to others and directed them, they exhibited the same by works in themselves; and as to the hearers, who saw that their works were with their words, many became their disciples without persuasion, and confessed Christ the king, praising God who had turned them to Him.

165E, anos depois da morte do rei Abgar, um de seus filhos rebeldes, que não obedecia à verdade, levantou-se e mandou dizer a Aggai, quando este estava sentado na igreja: «Faze-me diademas de ouro, como fazias para meus pais antigamente.» Aggai mandou-lhe responder: «Não abandonarei o ministério de Cristo, que me foi confiado pelo discípulo de Cristo, para fazer diademas de perversidade.» E, ao ver que ele não lhe obedecia, mandou quebrar-lhe as pernas enquanto estava sentado na igreja e expunha a doutrina.

165And years after the death of Abgar the king, one of his rebellious sons, who was not obedient to the truth, arose and sent word to Aggai, when he was sitting in the Church: "Make me headbands of gold, according to that which thou didst make for my fathers of old." Aggai sent him word: "I desert not the ministry of Christ, which has been committed to me by the disciple of Christ, and make headbands of wickedness." And when he saw that he did not obey him, he sent, and broke his legs, as he was sitting in the church and expounding.

166E, enquanto morria, fez Palut e Abshelama jurarem: «Nesta casa, por causa do nome Daquele por quem, eis que morro, colocai-me e sepultai-me.» E, conforme os fez jurar, assim o colocaram dentro da porta central da igreja, entre os homens e as mulheres. E houve grande e amarga tristeza em toda a igreja e em toda a cidade, maior que a dor de luto que houvera em seu interior quando o apóstolo Addai morreu.

166And as he was dying he made Palut and Abshelama swear that in this house, for the sake of whose name, behold, I die, place me and bury me. And as he made them swear, so they placed him within the middle door of the church, between the men and the women. And there was great and bitter sorrow in all the church, and in all the city, above the pain of sorrow, which had been in its interior, as the sorrow, which had been when Addai the Apostle died.

167E, porque morreu de súbito e depressa após lhe quebrarem as pernas, não pôde impor a mão sobre Palut. O próprio Palut foi a Antioquia e recebeu de Serapião, bispo de Antioquia, a imposição das mãos do sacerdócio.

167And because that by the breaking of his legs he died suddenly and quickly, he was not able to place the hand upon Palut. Palut himself went to Antioch, and received the hand of the priesthood from Serapion, Bishop of Antioch.

168O próprio Serapião, bispo de Antioquia, também recebeu a imposição das mãos de Zeferino, bispo da cidade de Roma, na sucessão da imposição das mãos do sacerdócio de Simão Cefas, que as recebeu de nosso Senhor e foi ali bispo de Roma por vinte e cinco anos, nos dias do César que ali reinou por treze anos.

168Serapion, Bishop of Antioch, himself also received the hand from Zephyrinus, Bishop of the city of Rome, from the succession of the hand of the priesthood of Simon Cephas, which he received from our Lord, who was there Bishop of Rome twenty-five years, in the days of the Caesar, who reigned there thirteen years.

169E, como é costume no reino do rei Abgar e em todos os reinos escrever e guardar entre os registros tudo o que o rei ordena e tudo o que se diz diante dele, assim também Labubna, filho de Sennac, filho de Abshadar, escriba do rei, escreveu essas coisas do apóstolo Addai, do princípio ao fim.

169And as is the custom in the kingdom of Abgar the king, and in all kingdoms, that everything which the king commands, and everything that is said before him is written down and placed among the records, so also Labubna, the son of Sennac, the son of Abshadar, the king's scribe, wrote these things of Addai the Apostle, from the beginning to the end.

170Hannan também, o tabulário, o sharrir do rei, apôs sua assinatura como testemunha e colocou o escrito entre os registros dos reis, onde são guardados os decretos e as leis, e onde se conservam com cuidado, sem qualquer negligência, os contratos daqueles que compram e vendem.

170Hannan also, the Tabularius, the king's Sharrir, set the hand of witness, and placed it among the records of the writings of the kings, where are put the commands and laws, and the contracts of those who buy and sell are kept there with care, without any negligence.
