Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 7

1Mas Xantipa vigiava continuamente através das portas em direção às ruas da cidade; e o bem-aventurado Paulo, pregador, mestre e iluminador do mundo, deixou Roma e chegou à Espanha pela presciência de Deus.

1But Xanthippe was always keeping watch through the doors into the streets of the city, and the blessed Paul, the preacher and teacher and illuminator of the world, left Rome and came even into Spain by the fore-knowledge of God.

2E chegando às portas da cidade, deteve-se, orou, persignou-se e entrou na cidade.

2And coming up to the gates of the city he stood and prayed, and crossing himself entered the city.

3Quando Xantipa avistou o bem-aventurado Paulo caminhando com passo sereno e equilibrado, adornado de toda virtude e prudência, alegrou-se grandemente nele e o seu coração saltava sem cessar; e, como possuída de inesperado regozijo, dizia de si para si: Por que bate o meu coração com tanta veemência ao avistar este homem?

3When Xanthippe saw the blessed Paul walking quietly and equally, and adorned with all virtue and understanding, she was greatly delighted in him and her heart leaped continually, and as possessed with an unexpected joy she said with herself, Why does my heart beat vehemently at the sight of this man?

4Por que é o seu andar tão sereno e uniforme, como o de alguém que espera acolher nos braços uma pessoa perseguida?

4Why is his walk quiet and equable, as of one who expects to take in his arms one that is pursued?

5Por que é o seu semblante tão afável, semelhante ao daquele que cuida dos enfermos?

5Why is his countenance kindly, as of one that tends the sick?

6Por que olha tão amorosamente para cá e para lá, como alguém que deseja socorrer os que buscam escapar das bocas dos dragões?

6Why does he look so lovingly hither and there, as one who desires to assist those who are seeking to flee from the mouths of dragons?

7Quem me dirá se este é um daqueles que pertencem ao rebanho dos pregadores?

7Who shall tell me that this is one from the flock of preachers?

8Se me fora possível, desejaria tocar a orla das suas vestes para constatar a sua benevolência, acolhimento e suave fragrância; pois o servo lhe dissera também que a orla das suas vestes recendia a perfumes preciosos.

8If it were possible for me, I should wish to touch the hem of his garments, that I may behold his kindness and readiness to receive and sweet odour; for the servant had told her this also, that the hems of his garments had the odour of precious perfumes.
