Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 36

1Estando ela ainda em oração, vieram os servos para conduzi-la ao leito do prefeito.

1And as she was yet praying, the attendants came to lead her to the couch of the prefect.

2Disse-lhes Polixena: Irmãos, não vos apresseis para a perdição de ninguém, pois este tempo passará depressa e os que cooperam com os destruidores perecerão com eles.

2But Polyxena said to them, Brethren, make not haste to any one's destruction, for this time shall quickly pass away, and they that work together with the destroyers shall perish with them.

3Antes socorrei os forasteiros, para que não sejais achados estranhos perante os anjos de Deus.

3Rather assist strangers, that you be not found strangers to the angels of God.

4Os homens, envergonhados com tais palavras, foram ter com o prefeito e disseram-lhe: A jovem foi acometida de febre violenta por causa do medo.

4The men, being shamed by these words, went to the prefect and said, The maid from fear is seized with a violent fever.

5Disse o prefeito: Deixai-a em paz.

5And the prefect said, Let her alone.

6E eis que o filho do prefeito foi ter com Polixena durante a noite; e ela, ao vê-lo, atemorizou-se, mas o jovem disse-lhe: Não temas, donzela.

6And, behold, the son of the prefect came to Polyxena by night, and she seeing him was afraid, but the youth said to her, Fear not, girl.

7Não procuro unir-me a ti como esposo de perdição, pois reconheci por tua prece que és a noiva do Deus dos céus.

7I seek not to be wedded with you as the bridegroom of destruction, for I know from your prayer that you are the bride of the God of heaven.

8Conheço este Deus que jamais é vencido por ninguém; pois um homem de glorioso semblante anunciou recentemente este Deus em Antioquia, e certa donzela chamada Tecla, crendo nele, seguiu-o enfrentando perigos por causa da sua formosura, a qual soube ter sido lançada às feras.

8I know this God who is never overcome by any one, for a certain man of glorious countenance lately in Antioch preached this God, and a certain maid, whose name was Thecla, believing him followed him, and encountered dangers on account of her beauty, of whom I have heard that she was condemned to the wild beasts.

9Eu, pois, contemplava continuamente aquele homem; e ele, ao perceber-me, disse-me: Que Deus te atenda, meu filho.

9I therefore continually gazed upon the man, and he having observed me said to me, God give heed to you, my son.

10Desde aquela época, pela graça de Cristo, recusei sacrificar aos ídolos, fingindo enfermidades ou ocupando-me em negócios; pelo que meu pai me dizia: 'Porque não tens zelo pelos sacrifícios dos deuses, por isso não gozas de perfeita saúde, sendo indigno deles'.

10From that time therefore by the grace of Christ I have not gone into the sacrifices of idols, but sometimes feigning illness and sometimes involving myself in some business, my father said to me, Because you have no zeal for the sacrifices of the gods, therefore neither are you in health, not being worthy of the gods.

11Mas eu alegrava-me ao ouvir que era indigno dos ídolos; e, pela graça divina, vieste parar aqui como providência para mim.

11But I rejoiced, hearing that I was not worthy of the sacrifices to idols; and, by the grace of God, are you come hither as a providence to me.

12Disse Polixena: E qual é o nome desse varão?

12Polyxena said, And what is the name of that man?

13Disse o jovem: Paulo é o seu nome.

13The youth said, Paul is his name.

14Disse Polixena: Ele está na minha cidade natal.

14Polyxena said, He is in my city.

15Disse o jovem: Vem, donzela, veste as minhas roupas, desce até à praia e espera-me ali; apanharei dinheiro e irei ter contigo rapidamente.

15The youth said, Come then, girl, put on my appearance, and go down to the shore and wait me there; I having taken money will come quickly.
