Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 32

1Ouvindo isto, o tropeiro chorou sem cessar, e Polixena lhe perguntou: Porventura te alcançou a providência de Deus, para que assim chores?

1The ass-driver hearing this wept unceasingly, and Polyxena said, Has then the providence of God overtaken you, that you weep thus?

2Disse o tropeiro: Se desejais saber por que choro, ouvi a verdade, pois não se deve relutar em contar as coisas de Cristo.

2The ass-driver said, If you are desirous to learn wherefore I weep, hear the truth, for one ought not to grudge to tell the things of Christ.

3Fui discípulo de Filipe, apóstolo de Cristo; e vendo que todo o seu zelo se voltava para os pobres, vendi tudo quanto possuía.

3I was a disciple of Philip, the apostle of Christ, and seeing how all his thought was towards the poor, I took all that I had and sold it.

4Com o preço comprei pão e vinho, distribuindo-os pelas cidades aos necessitados; e fazendo isto há tempos na cidade vizinha, certo homem aleijado clamou (não falando por si mesmo, mas Satanás por sua boca): 'Nada quero, nada recebo de ti, porque és cristão'.

4And taking the price, I bought bread and wine, and divided them throughout the cities to those that had need, when therefore I had done this for some time in the neighbouring city, a certain maimed person cried out, saying (though it was not himself that spoke, but Satan through his mouth), I desire nothing, I take nothing from you, because you are a Christian.

5Amotinou-se então toda a cidade contra mim procurando prender-me; mas enquanto corriam de um lado para outro passei pelo meio deles sem que ninguém me visse.

5Then the whole city arose against me and sought to take me, but some ran one way and some another, while I go through their midst and no one sees me.

6E, saindo da cidade, dei louvor e glória a Deus por assim ter sido recompensado, e roguei a meu Deus que encontrasse alguém que conhecesse o Seu nome santíssimo, a fim de que, contando essas coisas, pudesse obter alívio.

6And issuing from the city I gave praise and glory to God that thus I had been rewarded, and I prayed to my God that I should meet some one who knew his all-holy name, so that relating these things I might obtain relief.

7Pois os homens desta terra recusam terminantemente ouvir falar de Cristo, cheios de impiedade e perversidade.

7For the men of this country will not hear at all concerning Christ, being full of impiety and filled with wickedness.

8Suplico-vos, pois, aceitai também uma moeda de minhas mãos e, se vos parecer bem, descansai montadas nos jumentos.

8I exhort you therefore, take also one coin from me, and if it seem good, take rest also upon the asses.

9Disse Polixena: Alcances misericórdia de Deus, irmão.

9Polyxena said, May you obtain mercy from God, brother.

10Mas se queres receber plena recompensa, conduz-nos a salvo até ao mar, a fim de que, se Deus quiser, naveguemos de volta para a Espanha.

10But if you will receive a full reward, save us as far as the sea, so that, if God wills, we may sail for Spain.
