1Enquanto ela dizia estas palavras, e mais ainda, rompeu a manhã, e a leoa regressou da caçada.

1And as she was saying these words, and more than these, the morning dawned, and the lioness came from her hunting.

2Polixena, ao ver a fera, tremeu e disse: Pelo Deus de Paulo, ó fera, tem compaixão de mim e não me despedaces até que eu receba o batismo.

2Polyxena, seeing the wild beast, trembled and said, By the God of Paul, O wild beast, have compassion on me and tear me not until I receive baptism.

3E a fera, temendo a conjuração, retirou-se imediatamente e, postando-se ao longe, contemplava-a.

3And the wild beast, fearing the adjuration, immediately went away, and standing afar off gazed at her.

4Disse então a donzela: Eis que a fera me obedeceu; retirar-me-ei também da sua morada.

4And she said, Behold, the beast has obeyed me; I will also retire from its dwelling.

5E imediatamente começou a caminhar em direção ao oriente, e a fera ia adiante dela até que saísse da floresta.

5And immediately she began to journey towards the east, and the beast went before her until she had come out of the wood.

6Disse então Polixena: Que te darei em recompensa, ó fera?

6Then Polyxena said, What shall I give to you in return, O beast?

7O Deus de Paulo te retribuirá esta bondade; e a fera, ouvindo a sua oração, regressou imediatamente ao seu lugar.

7The God of Paul will repay you this kindness; and the wild beast, hearing her prayer, immediately returned to its place.

8Então ela, descendo, encontrou uma estrada pública e, parada nela, chorou sem saber para onde ir; e, embora muitos passassem, não se dirigiu a nenhum, mas disse: Talvez o Deus de Paulo se lembre de mim; e irei com quem tiver piedade de mim.

8Then she, descending, found a public road, and standing on it wept, not knowing whither she should go, and though many went past, she turned to none of them, but said, Perchance the God of Paul will remember me, and whoever shall have pity upon me, to him will I go.
