Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 25

1Mas, cuidando o Deus amoroso de Polixena, a embarcação chegou à Grécia, onde estava o bem-aventurado Filipe, que descera à praia por causa de uma visão, acompanhado de grandes multidões dos que eram instruídos por ele.

1But the loving God taking care for Polyxena, the vessel arrived in Greece, the blessed Philip being there, and having come down to the shore by a vision, and there accompanied him also great multitudes of those who were being taught by him.

2E eis que avistaram o barco de Polixena terrivelmente açoitado pelas ondas.

2And behold the vessel wherein was Polyxena appeared, terribly tossed about.

3Disse o bem-aventurado Filipe: Eis a embarcação por cuja causa descemos aqui, na qual viaja uma alma em grande perigo.

3And the blessed Philip said, Behold the vessel on account of which we came down here, in which there is a soul in trouble.

4Aportando o navio e descendo todos a terra firme, jaziam quase mortos de tão sacudidos que tinham sido no mar.

4When the vessel arrived and all had disembarked upon the dry land, they lay as half dead, because they had been greatly tossed about in the sea.

5Ordenou então o apóstolo Filipe que recolhessem Polixena e a conduzissem ao seu aposento, e que cuidassem dos demais tripulantes.

5But the apostle Philip ordered Polyxena to be lifted and taken to the place where he was lodging, and the rest to be looked to.

6Porém o raptor de Polixena, refeito do enjoo do mar, quis apoderar-se dela novamente; contudo Filipe, tendo confiado a jovem a um de seus fiéis discípulos, continuara alegremente a sua jornada.

6But he that had carried off Polyxena, recovering from the disorder of the sea, was desirous to take her again, for Philip, having entrusted Polyxena to one of those that were taught by him, went on his way rejoicing.

7Disse o discípulo que a guardava: Foi-me confiada por um varão santo, e não a entregarei a ti.

7But he that had her said, She was committed to me by a holy man, and I cannot give her up to you.

8Ele, porém, sem lhe dar ouvidos e encontrando ali um nobre seu parente, preparou-se para a guerra e reuniu oito mil homens.

8He, however, giving no heed to him and finding there a kinsman of his, a nobleman, prepared for war, gathering eight thousand men.

9Sabendo disto Polixena, fugiu às escondidas durante a noite; e o discípulo que dela cuidava disse: Tomarei a túnica de Filipe e sairei sozinho ao encontro deles; mas ao dizer isto anunciaram-lhe que a donzela desaparecera.

9Polyxena, knowing this, went forth by night and departed, but he that had charge of Polyxena said, Taking the tunic of Philip, I shall go forth alone to meet them; but as he said this it was announced to him that the maid was not there.

10Então ele, abandonando qualquer pensamento de guerra, correu à câmara e, não encontrando a donzela, lançou-se ao chão, dizendo: Ai de mim, desventurado, que me tornei inimigo de Filipe!

10Then he, leaving all thought of the war, ran into the bed-chamber, and not finding the maid threw himself on the ground, saying, Woe is me, wretched one, that have become an enemy of Philip.

11Que lhe responderei quando me pedir contas da virgem?

11What shall I answer him, when he asks the maiden from me?

12Vieram os servos e disseram-lhe: Levanta-te, nosso senhor, pois o exército cerca a nossa casa e a jovem não aparece.

12His servants came and said to him, Arise, our lord, from the ground, for the forces have surrounded your house, and the maid cannot be found.

13Respondeu ele: Deixai-me perecer aqui por causa dela.

13He said, Leave me thus to die on her account.

14Talvez até com isso Filipe, servo de Cristo, fique plenamente satisfeito, já que serei encontrado desprezando sua ordem.

14Perhaps, even by this, Philip the servant of Christ may be fully satisfied, since I shall be found despising his command.

15Então os servos, vendo que ele não lhes dava ouvidos, deliberaram fugir dos inimigos; mas, pouco depois, movidos novamente pela presciência de Deus, disseram: Não é justo que nosso senhor morra.

15Then the servants, seeing that he heeded them not, took counsel to flee from the enemies, but again after a little, being moved by the foreknowledge of God, they said, It is not right for our master to die.

16Eia, saiamos ao encontro dos inimigos empunhando o sinal da cruz.

16Come, let us go forth to meet them, raising the sign of the cross.

17Erguendo então a santa cruz avançaram cerca de trinta homens contra o exército adversário, abateram cinco mil inimigos e puseram em fuga os restantes.

17Then raising the precious cross they went forth, about thirty men, upon the enemy, and slew five thousand, and the rest fled.

18Regressaram vitoriosos ter com o amo louvando a Deus: Que Deus é tão grande como o nosso Deus, que livrou o Seu servo das mãos dos ímpios?

18And they returned with victory to their master, praising God and saying, What God is so great as our God, who has not suffered his servant to be slain by the wicked?

19E achando o amo ainda em lágrimas disseram-lhe: Levanta-te, senhor, e cessa o pranto, pois não se faz o que nós queremos, mas o que apraz ao Senhor.

19And coming upon their lord, still weeping, they said to him, Arise, lord, and weep not, for it befits it to be not as we will, but as the Lord wills.
