Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 22

1Após a ceia saiu Probo para ouvir a palavra, enquanto Xantipa, sentada em sua câmara, lia os santos profetas, repousando no leito a sua irmã Polixena.

1After supper then Probus went forth to hear the word, but Xanthippe sitting in her bed-chamber was reading the prophets, her sister Polyxena lying upon the couch.

2Xantipa amava Polixena com extremo afeto por ser mais jovem e de singular formosura, e Probo também a estimava grandemente.

2Xanthippe loved Polyxena exceedingly, because she was younger than herself, and beautiful in appearance, and Probus also loved her greatly.

3E repousando Polixena no leito, teve este sonho: que um dragão de aspecto hediondo vinha e lhe acenava para que se achegasse a ele; e não obedecendo ela, corria o monstro e a tragava.

3And as Polyxena lay upon the couch she saw this dream, that a dragon, hideous in appearance, came and signified to her to come to him, and when she did not obey him to go to him, he came running and swallowed her.

4Com pavor da visão despertou a jovem a tremer, e acorrendo Xantipa perguntou-lhe: Que te sucedeu, querida irmã, que de repente despertaste sobressaltada?

4From fear of this the girl leapt up trembling, and Xanthippe running to her said, What has happened to you, dearest, that you have leapt up thus suddenly?

5Esteve ela muito tempo sem conseguir articular palavra; voltando depois a si, disse: Ai de mim, irmã Xantipa, não sei que tribulação me aguarda, pois vi em sonhos que um dragão medonho vinha e me chamava, e recusando eu ir, investiu sobre mim e engoliu-me a começar pelos pés.

5She for a long time was unable to speak; then coming to herself she said, Alas, my sister Xanthippe, what danger or tribulation awaits me, I know not; for I saw in my dream that a hideous dragon came and signed to me to go to him, and, when I would not go, he came running and swallowed me, beginning at my feet.

6Enquanto eu estava aterrorizada com isso, falou subitamente do ar, à luz do sol, um belo jovem, que pensei ser irmão de Paulo, dizendo: Em verdade, não tens poder.

6While I was terrified at this, there suddenly spoke out of the air, in the light of the sun, a beautiful youth, whom I thought to be the brother of Paul, saying, Verily, you have no power.

7O qual me tomou pela mão e arrebatou-me das entranhas do monstro, sumindo-se o dragão ao instante.

7Who also took me by the hand and straightway drew me out of him, and straightway the dragon disappeared.

8E eis que a mão dele estava cheia de doce aroma, como de bálsamo ou de outra coisa fragrante.

8And behold his hand was full of sweet odour as of balsam or anything else for fragrance.

9Disse-lhe Xantipa: Em verdade deves estar muito perturbada, minha irmã Polixena, mas Deus te tem por querida, visto que te mostrou coisas estranhas e maravilhosas.

9Xanthippe said to her, Truly you must be greatly troubled, my sister Polyxena, but God has you dear, seeing that he has shown you strange and marvellous things.

10Levanta-te, pois, pela manhã, recebe o santo batismo e suplica nele que sejas preservada das ciladas do dragão infernal.

10Therefore arise quickly in the morning and receive the holy baptism, and ask in the baptism to be delivered from the snares of the dragon.
