Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 20

1O grande Paulo ensinava assim: Os que ardem na carne observem o matrimônio legítimo, evitando a fornicação, especialmente com a esposa de outro, e os que estão unidos permaneçam um com o outro.

1The great Paul was teaching thus, Let those that burn in the flesh observe lawful marriage, avoiding fornication, especially that with another's wife, and let those that are united keep to one another.

2Probo ouviu este ensinamento com deleite e exclamou: Ó Paulo, quão sábia e retamente ministras esta instrução!

2Probus heard this teaching with delight, and said, O Paul, how excellently and wisely you employ this teaching.

3Por que, então, Xantipa se afastou de mim?

3Why then has Xanthippe withdrawn from me?

4Disse Paulo: Meu filho Probo, aqueles que preveem que as obras humanas serão provadas pelo fogo, e que trazem gravada na mente a inexorabilidade da morte, despojam-se de todo desejo carnal terreno.

4And Paul said, My son Probus, they that foresee that the works of men shall be tried with fire, and that have always in their mind the inexorableness of death, cast out all desire that cleaves to the flesh.

5Mas ai quando o desejo julgar aquele que desejou; então ele rangerá os dentes inutilmente e em vão, pois já passou a ocasião de emendar-se pelo arrependimento.

5But woe when the desire shall judge him that desired, then he shall gnash his teeth to no effect and in vain, for the amendment of repentance is past.

6Ouvindo isto Probo, recolheu-se a casa maravilhado e nada provou naquele dia, deitando-se no leito.

6Hearing this Probus went up into his house marvelling, and tasted nothing that day, but went and lay down upon his bed.

7E cerca da terceira hora da noite levantou-se e disse: Ai de mim, quão infeliz foi o dia em que desposei Xantipa!

7And about the third hour of the night he arose and said, Alas, how wretched was the day in which I was wedded to Xanthippe.

8Antes houvera morrido sem nunca tê-la conhecido.

8Would that I had died and not seen her.

9Dizendo isto, levantou-se e disse: Orarei ao Deus de Paulo.

9Saying this he arose and said, I shall pray to the God of Paul.

10Talvez Ele opere em meu favor o que for justo, para que eu não seja objeto de opróbrio perante o mundo ao ser repudiado por ela.

10Perchance he will do to me also what is fitting, that I may not become a reproach in the world, being rejected by her.

11E imediatamente, prostrando-se no chão, disse: Ó Deus de Paulo, se, como ouvi de Xantipa, buscas os ignorantes e fazes voltar os desgarrados, faze também comigo o que for conveniente; pois és o rei da vida e da morte, segundo ouvi, e dominas as coisas no céu, na terra e debaixo da terra, e todos os pensamentos e desejos dos homens; e somente a Ti pertence a glória por toda a eternidade.

11And straightway falling upon the ground he said, O God of Paul, if, as I have heard from Xanthippe, you seek after the ignorant and turn back those that are astray, do to me also what is fitting; for you are the king of life and death, as I have heard, and have dominion over things in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and over all the thoughts and desires of men, and to you alone belongs glory to all eternity.
