Atos de Xantipa e Polixena 17

1E Probo levantou-se do leito com o semblante muito carregado, pois durante o sono tivera um sonho e andava profundamente perturbado com ele.

1And Probus arose from his couch with a very gloomy countenance, for in his sleep he had seen a dream, and was greatly troubled concerning it.

2O guarda, porém, ao vê-lo prestes a sair para a praça pública com semblante tão sombrio, temeu em extremo, dizendo de si para si: Não suceda que ele tenha descoberto o ocorrido e me tire a vida miseravelmente.

2But the porter seeing him about to issue to the market-place, having his countenance thus troubled, was greatly afraid, Lest, said he, he know what has happened, and will miserably destroy me.

3Contudo Probo, tendo saído e indicado aos que estavam na praça o que convinha àquele dia e àquela estação, regressou rapidamente à casa e disse a seus servos: Chamai-me depressa os sábios Barando e Gnosteas.

3Probus, however, having gone forth and signified to those in the market what was fitting for the day and season, speedily returned into the house, and said to his servants, Call me quickly the wise men Barandus and Gnosteas.

4Chegados à sua presença, disse-lhes: Tive uma visão pavorosa, e o que nela se manifestou transcende a nossa capacidade de interpretação.

4When they were summoned he said to them, I have seen a very terrible vision, and what appeared in it is difficult for our power to interpret.

5Revelai-ma vós, porém, que sois considerados os mais insignes em sabedoria.

5This, however, do ye disclose to me, as being the most excellent of all the world.

6Exponde-ma quando eu vo-la relatar.

6Expound it to me when I tell it you.

7Disse-lhe Barando: Se a visão puder ser explicada pela sabedoria deste mundo, nós to declararemos; mas se pertencer à fé que agora se anuncia, não a podemos decifrar, pois procede de outro entendimento superior.

7Barandus says to him, If the vision can be interpreted by our wisdom, we shall explain it to you, but if it be of the faith that is now spoken of we cannot expound it to you, for it is of another wisdom and understanding.

8Todavia, conte o nosso senhor e mestre o seu sonho, e vejamos se há para ele explicação.

8However, let our lord and master tell the dream, and let us see if there is any explanation for it.

9Disse Probo a Gnosteas: Por que nada respondes?

9Probus says to Gnosteas, Wherefore do you answer nothing?

10Disse Gnosteas: Não ouvi o sonho; e que poderei dizer, seja ele qual for, se tem relação com Paulo?

10Gnosteas said, I have not heard the dream, and what can I say but whatever it may be, if it is by reason of Paul?

11Conta-o agora, e verás que assim é.

11Tell me now, and you will find it so.

12Disse Probo: Parecia-me estar de pé numa terra estranha e desconhecida, onde estava assentado um rei etíope que dominava sobre toda a terra e aparentava não ter sucessor algum.

12Probus said, I thought I was standing in a certain unknown and strange country, and that there sat there an Ethiop king, who ruled over all the earth and seemed never to have any successor.

13Junto dele achava-se uma multidão incontável de servos, e todos se precipitavam na destruição e exerciam cruel domínio por toda parte.

13There stood beside him multitudes of servants, and all hastened to destruction and had mastery far and wide.

14E quando o etíope supunha ter consumado o seu intento, surgiu um corvo que, pousando sobre ele, grasnou com voz lamentável.

14And when that Ethiop seemed to have gained his purpose, there arose a raven and standing above him croaked with a pitiful voice.

15E subitamente ergueu-se das bandas do oriente uma águia que despojou o reino dele, anulando-lhe todo o poder; e os que estavam ao seu redor fugiram para a águia.

15And straightway there arose from the eastern parts an eagle, and seized his kingdom, and his power was made vain, and those standing by him fled to the eagle.

16Lutou então aquele rei contra os fugitivos, mas a águia arrebatou-os até ao céu; e eis que veio um socorredor aos que se acolheram à águia e entregou-lhes o seu cajado.

16Then that king strove against those that fled to the eagle, but the eagle carried it up into heaven, and, behold, there came a helper to those that fled to the eagle and left his staff to them.

17Segurando-o eles com firmeza, não foram vencidos pela fúria daquele tirano.

17Then they laying hold of it were not overcome by the violence of that king.

18E quantos acorriam aos que empunhavam o cajado eram lavados em águas puríssimas, e os que eram lavados adquiriam poder sobre o império do ímpio.

18So many as ran to those who had the staff, he washed them in pure water, and they that were washed had power over his kingdom.

19E por meio daquele cajado foram postos em fuga os inimigos do rei; pelo que homens valorosos, sustentando o cajado, atraíram para si grandes multidões.

19And by that staff the enemies of the king were put to flight, therefore capable men laying hold of the staff turned to themselves great multitudes.

20Aquele monarca lutava contra eles sem prevalecer; contudo estorvava a muitos de crerem naquele que enviara tais arautos ao mundo para darem testemunho, pelo que muitos andavam contristados.

20And that king strove against them, and had no might at all, but he hindered many from believing in him that sent out the men into the world to bear witness, and for that reason many were grieved.

21Todavia este não constrangia ninguém como o outro, pois ele próprio era senhor de toda a luz.

21Nevertheless, this one did not constrain any like the other, for he himself was ruler of all light.

22E este foi o termo da visão.

22This then was the end.
