Atos de Paulo 8

1Ora, aqueles que redigiram as viagens de Paulo relataram que ele fez muitas outras coisas, e entre elas esta que lhe sucedeu quando estava em Éfeso. Sendo Jerônimo o governador, Paulo usou de liberdade de palavra, e aquele disse que ele era capaz de falar bem, mas que não era tempo para tais palavras. Mas o povo da cidade, ferozmente enfurecido, pôs os pés de Paulo em ferros e o encerrou na prisão, até que fosse exposto como presa aos leões. Porém Êubula e Artemila, mulheres de homens eminentes entre os efésios, sendo suas devotadas discípulas e visitando-o de noite, desejaram a graça da divina ablução. E pelo poder de Deus, com anjos a escoltá-las e a iluminar a escuridão da noite com a abundância do resplendor que neles havia, Paulo, solto de seus grilhões de ferro, foi à praia do mar e as iniciou no santo batismo; e regressando às suas prisões sem que nenhum dos guardas da prisão o percebesse, ficou reservado como presa para os leões.

1Now they who drew up the travels of Paul have related that he did many other things, and among them this, which befell when he was at Ephesus. Hieronymus being governor, Paul used liberty of speech, and he said that he was able to speak well, but that this was not the time for such words. But the people of the city, fiercely enraged, put Paul's feet into irons, and shut him up in the prison, till he should be exposed as a prey to the lions. But Eubula and Artemilla, wives of eminent men among the Ephesians, being his attached disciples, and visiting him by night, desired the grace of the divine washing. And by God's power, with angels to escort them and enlighten the gloom of night with the excess of the brightness that was in them, Paul, loosed from his iron fetters, went to the sea-shore and initiated them into holy baptism, and returning to his bonds without any of those in care of the prison perceiving it, was reserved as a prey for the lions.

2Foi, pois, solto contra ele um leão de enorme tamanho e força inigualável, o qual correu para ele no estádio e prostrou-se a seus pés. E quando muitas outras feras selvagens também foram soltas, a nenhuma delas foi permitido tocar o santo corpo, que permanecia em pé como uma estátua em oração. Neste momento, uma violenta e copiosa saraivada desabou de repente com grande ímpeto, e despedaçou a cabeça de muitos homens como também de feras, e decepou a orelha do próprio Jerônimo. E depois disso, com os seus seguidores, ele veio ao Deus de Paulo e recebeu o batismo da salvação. Mas o leão escapou para as montanhas.

2A lion, then, of huge size and unmatched strength was let loose upon him, and it ran to him in the stadium and lay down at his feet. And when many other savage beasts, too, were let loose, it was permitted to none of them to touch the holy body, standing like a statue in prayer. At this juncture a violent and vast hailstorm poured down all at once with a great rush, and shattered the heads of many men and beasts as well, and shore off the ear of Hieronymus himself. And thereafter, with his followers, he came to the God of Paul and received the baptism of salvation. But the lion escaped to the mountains.

3E dali navegou Paulo para a Macedônia e a Grécia, e depois, passando pela Macedônia, veio a Trôade e a Mileto, e de lá partiu para Jerusalém.

3And thence Paul sailed to Macedonia and Greece, and thereafter through Macedonia came to Troas and to Miletus, and from there set out for Jerusalem.
