Primeira Apologia de Justino 9

1Tampouco honramos, com muitos sacrifícios e grinaldas de flores, divindades que os homens formaram, colocaram em santuários e chamaram de deuses; pois vemos que são inanimadas e mortas e não têm a forma de Deus (pois não consideramos que Deus tenha uma forma como a que alguns dizem imitar para honrá-lo), mas têm os nomes e as formas daqueles demônios perversos que apareceram. Pois por que precisaríamos dizer-vos, a vós que já o sabeis, em que formas os artesãos moldam os materiais, esculpindo e talhando, fundindo e martelando? E muitas vezes, apenas mudando a forma de objetos desonrosos e fazendo uma imagem com a figura desejada, produzem aquilo a que chamam deus; o que consideramos não só insensato, mas até ofensivo a Deus, que, possuindo glória e forma inefáveis, vê assim seu nome ligado a coisas corruptíveis que exigem cuidado constante.

1And neither do we honour with many sacrifices and garlands of flowers such deities as men have formed and set in shrines and called gods; since we see that these are soulless and dead, and have not the form of God (for we do not consider that God has such a form as some say that they imitate to His honour), but have the names and forms of those wicked demons which have appeared. For why need we tell you who already know, into what forms the craftsmen, carving and cutting, casting and hammering, fashion the materials? And often out of vessels of dishonour, by merely changing the form, and making an image of the requisite shape, they make what they call a god; which we consider not only senseless, but to be even insulting to God, who, having ineffable glory and form, thus gets His name attached to things that are corruptible, and require constant service.

2E sabeis muito bem que os artífices dessas imagens são intemperantes e, para não entrar em detalhes, versados em todos os vícios; corrompem até as próprias moças que trabalham com eles. Que desvario! Dizer que homens dissolutos modelam e fazem deuses para o vosso culto, e designar esses homens como guardiões dos templos onde são colocados, sem reconhecer que é ilícito sequer pensar ou dizer que homens são guardiões de deuses.

2And that the artificers of these are both intemperate, and, not to enter into particulars, are practised in every vice, you very well know; even their own girls who work along with them they corrupt. What infatuation! that dissolute men should be said to fashion and make gods for your worship, and that you should appoint such men the guardians of the temples where they are enshrined; not recognising that it is unlawful even to think or say that men are the guardians of gods.
