1A história de Haiqar, o Sábio, Vizir de Senaqueribe, o Rei, e de Nadan, filho da irmã de Haiqar, o Sábio.

1The story of Haiqar the Wise, Vizier of Sennacherib the King, and of Nadan, sister's son to Haiqar the Sage.

2Houve um vizir nos dias do rei Senaqueribe, filho de Sarhadum, rei da Assíria e de Nínive, um homem sábio chamado Haiqar, e ele era vizir do rei Senaqueribe.

2There was a Vizier in the days of King Sennacherib, son of Sarhadum, King of Assyria and Nineveh, a wise man named Haiqar, and he was Vizier of the king Sennacherib.

3Ele tinha uma bela fortuna e muitos bens, e era hábil, sábio, um filósofo, em conhecimento, em opinião e em governo, e se casou com sessenta mulheres e construiu um castelo para cada uma delas.

3He had a fine fortune and much goods, and he was skilful, wise, a philosopher, in knowledge, in opinion and in government, and he had married sixty women, and had built a castle for each of them.

4Mas apesar de tudo ele não teve filhos com nenhuma dessas mulheres, que poderiam ser suas herdeiras.

4But with it all he had no child by any of these women, who might be his heir.

5E ele ficou muito triste por causa disso, e um dia reuniu os astrólogos, os homens instruídos e os magos e explicou-lhes sua condição e a questão de sua esterilidade.

5And he was very sad on account of this, and one day he assembled the astrologers and the learned men and the wizards and explained to them his condition and the matter of his barrenness.

6E eles lhe disseram: 'Vá, sacrifique aos deuses e implore-lhes que talvez eles possam lhe fornecer um menino.'

6And they said to him, 'Go, sacrifice to the gods and beseech them that perchance they may provide thee with a boy.'

7E ele fez como eles lhe disseram e ofereceu sacrifícios aos ídolos, e rogou-lhes e implorou-lhes com pedidos e súplicas.

7And he did as they told him and offered sacrifices to the idols, and besought them and implored them with request and entreaty.

8E eles não lhe responderam nem uma palavra. E ele foi embora triste e abatido, partindo com uma dor no coração.

8And they answered him not one word. And he went away sorrowful and dejected, departing with a pain at his heart.

9E ele voltou, e implorou ao Deus Altíssimo, e acreditou, suplicando-Lhe com um ardor em seu coração, dizendo: 'Ó Deus Altíssimo, ó Criador dos Céus e da terra, ó Criador de todas as coisas criadas!

9And he returned, and implored the Most High God, and believed, beseeching Him with a burning in his heart, saying, 'O Most High God, O Creator of the Heavens and of the earth, O Creator of all created things!

10Rogo-te que me dês um menino, para que eu possa ser consolado por ele, para que ele esteja presente na minha morte, para que feche meus olhos e para que possa me enterrar.'

10I beseech Thee to give me a boy, that I may be consoled by him, that he may be present at my death, that he may close my eyes, and that he may bury me.'

11Então veio até ele uma voz dizendo: 'Visto que você confiou primeiro em imagens esculpidas e ofereceu sacrifícios a elas, por esta razão você permanecerá sem filhos por toda a vida.

11Then there came to him a voice saying, 'Inasmuch as thou hast relied first of all on graven images, and hast offered sacrifices to them, for this reason thou shalt remain childless thy life long.

12Mas tome Nadan, o filho de sua irmã, e faça dele seu filho e ensine-lhe seu conhecimento e sua boa educação, e quando você morrer ele te enterrará.'

12But take Nadan thy sister's son, and make him thy child and teach him thy learning and thy good breeding, and at thy death he shall bury thee.'

13Então ele levou Nadan, o filho de sua irmã, que estava amamentando um pouco. E entregou-o a oito amas de leite, para que o amamentassem e o criassem.

13Thereupon he took Nadan his sister's son, who was a little suckling. And he handed him over to eight wet-nurses, that they might suckle him and bring him up.

14E eles o criaram com boa comida e treinamento gentil e roupas de seda, e púrpura e carmesim. E ele estava sentado em sofás de seda.

14And they brought him up with good food and gentle training and silken clothing, and purple and crimson. And he was seated upon couches of silk.

15E quando Nadan cresceu e começou a andar, crescendo como um cedro alto, ele lhe ensinou boas maneiras, escrita, ciência e filosofia.

15And when Nadan grew big and walked, shooting up like a tall cedar, he taught him good manners and writing and science and philosophy.

16E depois de muitos dias o rei Senaqueribe olhou para Haiqar e viu que ele havia envelhecido muito e, além disso, disse-lhe.

16And after many days King Sennacherib looked at Haiqar and saw that he had grown very old, and moreover he said to him.

17'Ó meu honrado amigo, o hábil, o confiável, o sábio, o governador, meu secretário, meu vizir, meu chanceler e diretor; na verdade você está muito velho e pesado com os anos; e tua partida deste mundo deve estar próxima.

17'O my honoured friend, the skilful, the trusty, the wise, the governor, my secretary, my vizier, my Chancellor and director; verily thou art grown very old and weighted with years; and thy departure from this world must be near.

18Diga-me quem terá um lugar em meu serviço depois de você.' E Haiqar disse-lhe: 'Ó meu senhor, que tua cabeça viva para sempre! Há Nadan, filho da minha irmã, eu fiz dele meu filho.

18Tell me who shall have a place in my service after thee.' And Haiqar said to him, 'O my lord, may thy head live for ever! There is Nadan my sister's son, I have made him my child.

19E eu o criei e lhe ensinei minha sabedoria e meu conhecimento.'

19And I have brought him up and taught him my wisdom and my knowledge.'

20E o rei disse-lhe: 'Ó Haiqar! traze-o à minha presença, para que eu o veja, e se o achar adequado, põe-no no teu lugar; e seguirás o teu caminho, para descansar e viver o resto da tua vida em doce repouso.'

20And the king said to him, 'O Haiqar! bring him to my presence, that I may see him, and if I find him suitable, put him in thy place; and thou shalt go thy way, to take a rest and to live the remainder of thy life in sweet repose.'

21Então Haiqar foi e apresentou a Nadan o filho de sua irmã. E ele prestou homenagem e desejou-lhe poder e honra.

21Then Haiqar went and presented Nadan his sister's son. And he did homage and wished him power and honour.

22E ele olhou para ele e o admirou e se alegrou com ele e disse a Haiqar: 'Este é teu filho, ó Haiqar? Rogo para que Deus o preserve. E assim como tu serviste a mim e a meu pai Sarhadum, também este teu menino pode me servir e cumprir meus empreendimentos, minhas necessidades e meus negócios, para que eu possa honrá-lo e torná-lo poderoso por tua causa.'

22And he looked at him and admired him and rejoiced in him and said to Haiqar: 'Is this thy son, O Haiqar? I pray that God may preserve him. And as thou hast served me and my father Sarhadum so may this boy of thine serve me and fulfil my undertakings, my needs, and my business, so that I may honour him and make him powerful for thy sake.'

23E Haiqar prestou homenagem ao rei e disse-lhe: 'Que tua cabeça viva, ó meu senhor, o rei, para sempre! Peço que você seja paciente com meu filho Nadan e perdoe seus erros para que ele possa servi-lo como for apropriado.'

23And Haiqar did obeisance to the king and said to him 'May thy head live, O my lord the king, for ever! I seek from thee that thou mayst be patient with my boy Nadan and forgive his mistakes that he may serve thee as it is fitting.'

24Então o rei jurou-lhe que faria dele o maior dos seus favoritos e o mais poderoso dos seus amigos, e que estaria com ele com toda a honra e respeito. E ele beijou suas mãos e despediu-se dele.

24Then the king swore to him that he would make him the greatest of his favourites, and the most powerful of his friends, and that he should be with him in all honour and respect. And he kissed his hands and bade him farewell.

25E ele levou Nadan, o filho de sua irmã, com ele e o sentou em uma sala e começou a ensiná-lo noite e dia até que ele o enchesse de sabedoria e conhecimento mais do que de pão e água.

25And he took Nadan his sister's son with him and seated him in a parlour and set about teaching him night and day till he had crammed him with wisdom and knowledge more than with bread and water.
