1O tema de meu discurso é extremamente filosófico, a saber: se a razão piedosa é soberana sobre as paixões.

1The subject of my discourse is extremely philosophical, namely: whether pious reason is sovereign over the passions.

2Convido-vos, portanto, a considerar seriamente esta filosofia, que é necessária para todos os que buscam o conhecimento, e além disso inclui o louvor da mais alta virtude, quero dizer, a prudência.

2I invite you, therefore, to consider seriously this philosophy, which is necessary for all who seek knowledge, and moreover includes the praise of the highest virtue, I mean, prudence.

3Se então fica demonstrado que a razão é soberana sobre as paixões que impedem a temperança, tais como a gula e a luxúria;

3If then it is demonstrated that reason is sovereign over the passions that impede temperance, such as gluttony and lust;

4É também claramente soberana sobre as paixões que impedem a justiça, como a malícia, e sobre as que impedem a coragem, como a ira, o medo e a dor.

4It is also clearly sovereign over the passions that impede justice, such as malice, and over those that impede courage, such as anger, fear and pain.

5Alguns talvez perguntem: Por que, se a razão é soberana sobre as paixões, não governa o esquecimento e a ignorância?

5Some may ask: Why, if reason is sovereign over the passions, does it not govern forgetfulness and ignorance?

6Esta objeção é absurda, pois a razão não é soberana sobre as suas próprias paixões, mas sobre as contrárias à justiça, à coragem e à temperança.

6This objection is absurd, for reason is not sovereign over its own passions, but over those contrary to justice, courage and temperance.

7E sobre estas a razão é soberana, não para destruí-las, mas para não cedermos a elas.

7And over these reason is sovereign, not to destroy them, but so that we do not yield to them.

8Há muitos argumentos que eu poderia apresentar para provar que a razão é soberana sobre as paixões.

8There are many arguments that I could present to prove that reason is sovereign over the passions.

9Mas a melhor prova seria a coragem daqueles que morreram pela virtude: Eleazar, os sete irmãos e sua mãe.

9But the best proof would be the courage of those who died for virtue: Eleazar, the seven brothers and their mother.

10Pois todos estes, desprezando a dor até a morte, demonstraram que a razão é soberana sobre as paixões.

10For all these, despising pain unto death, demonstrated that reason is sovereign over the passions.
