1Daniel

2Ele era da tribo de Judá, de uma família proeminente no serviço do rei; mas em sua infância ele foi levado da Judéia para a terra da Caldéia.

2He was of the tribe of Judah, of a family prominent in the service of the king; but in his childhood he was carried away from Judea to the land of Chaldea.

3Ele nasceu em Bete-Horom Superior. Na sua idade adulta ele era casto, de modo que os judeus o consideravam um eunuco.

3He was born in Upper Beth-horon. In his manhood he was chaste, so that the Jews thought him a eunuch.

4Ele lamentou muito pela cidade e, em jejum, absteve-se de todo tipo de comida saborosa. Ele era magro e abatido aos olhos dos homens, mas belo na graça do Altíssimo.

4He mourned greatly over the city, and in fasting abstained from every sort of dainty food. He was lean and haggard in the eyes of men, but beautiful in the grace of the Most High.

5Ele fez grandes súplicas em favor de Nabucodonosor, cujo filho Belsazar lhe implorou por ajuda no momento em que o rei se tornou um animal do campo, para que não perecesse.

5He made great supplication in behalf of Nebuchadnezzar, whose son Belshazzar besought him for aid at the time when the king became a beast of the field, lest he should perish.

6Pois sua cabeça e partes dianteiras eram as de um boi, suas pernas e partes traseiras eram as de um leão.

6For his head and foreparts were those of an ox, his legs and hinder parts those of a lion.

7O significado desta maravilha foi revelado ao profeta: o rei tornou-se uma fera por causa da sua auto-indulgência e da sua teimosia.

7The meaning of this marvel was revealed to the prophet: the king became a beast because of his self-indulgence and his stubbornness.

8É típico dos tiranos que, em sua juventude, caiam sob o jugo de Satanás; nos últimos anos, eles se tornam feras, arrebatando, destruindo, ferindo e matando.

8It is the manner of tyrants, that in their youth they come under the yoke of Satan; in their latter years they become wild beasts, snatching, destroying, smiting, and slaying.

9O profeta sabia por revelação divina que o rei comia erva como um boi, e que esta se tornou para ele o alimento de um ser humano.

9The prophet knew by divine revelation that the king was eating grass like an ox, and that it became for him the food of a human being.

10Foi por isso que o próprio Nabucodonosor, recuperando a razão humana quando a digestão estava completa, costumava chorar e suplicar ao Senhor, orando quarenta vezes cada dia e noite.

10Therefore it was that Nebuchadnezzar himself, recovering human reason when digestion was completed, used to weep and beseech the Lord, praying forty times each day and night.

11Então a mente de um animal mudo tomaria posse dele (novamente) e ele esqueceria que tinha sido um ser humano.

11Then the mind of a dumb animal would (again) take possession of him and he would forget that he had been a human being.

12Sua língua havia perdido a capacidade de falar; quando ele entendeu sua condição, ele chorou, e seus olhos eram como carne viva por causa do choro.

12His tongue had lost the power of speech; when he understood his condition he wept, and his eyes were like raw flesh from his weeping.

13Muitos foram os que saíram da cidade para vê-lo; Somente Daniel não desejava vê-lo, mas durante todo o tempo de sua transformação ele orou por ele.

13There were many who went out from the city to see him; Daniel alone had no wish to see him, but during all the time of his transformation he was in prayer for him.

14Ele declarou que o rei seria restaurado à forma humana, mas eles não acreditaram nele.

14He declared that the king would be restored to human form, but they did not believe him.

15Daniel fez com que os sete anos (o significado dos seus “sete tempos”) se tornassem sete meses.

15Daniel caused the seven years (the meaning of his "seven times") to become seven months.

16O mistério dos sete tempos cumpriu-se sobre o rei, pois em sete meses ele foi restaurado, e nos (restantes) seis anos e cinco meses ele estava fazendo penitência ao Senhor e confessando sua maldade. Quando seu pecado foi perdoado, o reino lhe foi devolvido.

16The mystery of the seven times was fulfilled upon the king, for in seven months he was restored, and in the (remaining) six years and five months he was doing penance to the Lord and confessing his wickedness. When his sin had been forgiven, the kingdom was given back to him.

17Ele não comeu pão nem carne no momento de seu arrependimento, pois Daniel lhe havia ordenado que comesse leguminosas e verduras enquanto apaziguava o Senhor.

17He ate neither bread nor flesh in the time of his repentance, for Daniel had bidden him eat pulse and greens while appeasing the Lord.

18O rei nomeou o profeta Baltasar porque desejava torná-lo co-herdeiro com os seus filhos;

18The king named the prophet Baltasar because he wished to make him a joint heir with his children;

19mas o homem santo disse: "Longe de mim abandonar a herança de meus pais e participar da herança dos incircuncisos."

19but the holy man said: "Far be it from me to forsake the heritage of my fathers and join in the inheritances of the uncircumcised."

20Ele também fez muitas coisas maravilhosas para os outros reis persas que não foram escritas.

20He also did for the other Persian kings many wonderful things which were not written down.

21Ele morreu ali e foi sepultado com grande honra, sozinho, no sepulcro real.

21He died there, and was buried with great honor, by himself, in the royal sepulcher.

22Ele colocou um sinal nos montes que estão acima de Babilônia: Quando o monte do norte fumegar, virá o fim de Babilônia; quando arder como fogo, o fim de toda a terra estará próximo. Se o monte do sul manar água, Israel retornará à sua terra; se correr sangue, pressagia uma matança trazida por Satanás em toda a terra.

22He appointed a sign in the mountains which are above Babylon: When the mountain on the north shall smoke, the end of Babylon will come; when it shall burn as with fire, the end of all the earth will be at hand. If the mountain on the south shall flow with water, Israel will return to its land; if it shall run blood, it portends a slaughter brought by Satan on all the earth.

23E o santo profeta dormiu em paz.

23And the holy prophet slept in peace.
