2Ele era do distrito de Quiriate-Maon, perto da cidade gentia de Azoto, à beira-mar.

2He was from the district of Kiriath-maon, near the Gentile city of Azotus on the sea.

3Depois de ter sido lançado em terra pela baleia e ter feito a sua viagem para Nínive, ao regressar não ficou na sua própria terra, mas levou a sua mãe e estabeleceu-se em Tiro, um país de povos estrangeiros.

3After he had been cast on shore by the whale and had made his journey to Nineveh, on his return he did not stay in his own land, but took his mother and settled in Tyre, a country of foreign peoples.

4Pois ele disse: “Assim tirarei o meu vitupério, de que profetizei falsamente contra a grande cidade de Nínive”.

4For he said, "In this way I will take away my reproach, that I prophesied falsely against the great city Nineveh."

5Elias estava naquela época repreendendo a casa de Acabe e, tendo provocado fome na terra, ele fugiu. Chegando à região de Tiro, encontrou a viúva e o filho dela, pois ele próprio não podia hospedar-se com os incircuncisos.

5Elijah was at that time rebuking the house of Ahab, and having called a famine upon the land he fled. Coming to the region of Tyre he found the widow and her son, for he himself could not lodge with the uncircumcised.

6Ele trouxe uma bênção para ela; e quando seu filho morreu, Deus o ressuscitou dos mortos por meio de Elias, pois ele queria mostrar-lhe que não é possível fugir de Deus.

6He brought her a blessing; and when her child died, God raised him from the dead through Elijah, for he wished to show him that it is not possible to flee from God.

7Depois que a fome acabou, Jonas foi para a terra da Judéia. No caminho, sua mãe morreu e ele a enterrou ao lado do carvalho de Débora.

7After the famine was over, Jonah came into the land of Judea. On the way thither his mother died, and he buried her beside the oak of Deborah.

8Depois disso, tendo se estabelecido na terra de Seir, morreu ali e foi sepultado no túmulo do quenezeu, o primeiro que se tornou juiz nos dias em que não havia rei.

8Thereafter having settled in the land of Seir, he died there and was buried in the tomb of the Kenizzite, the first who became judge in the days when there was no king.

9Ele deu um sinal a Jerusalém e a toda a terra: Quando vissem uma pedra clamando em voz alta, o fim estaria próximo; e quando vissem todos os gentios reunidos em Jerusalém, a cidade seria arrasada até os alicerces.

9He gave a sign to Jerusalem and to all the land: When they should see a stone crying aloud in distress, the end would be at hand; and when they should see all the Gentiles gathered in Jerusalem, the city would be razed to its foundations.
