Testamento de Jó 3

1Porque eu tinha cento e trinta mil ovelhas, e destas separei sete mil para vestir os órfãos e as viúvas, e os necessitados e os doentes.

1For I had one hundred and thirty thousand sheep, and of these I separated seven thousand for the clothing of orphans and widows and of needy and sick ones.

2Eu tinha um rebanho de oitocentos cães que cuidavam das minhas ovelhas e além desses duzentos para vigiar a minha casa.

2I had a herd of eight hundred dogs who watched my sheep and besides these two hundred to watch my house.

3E eu tinha nove moinhos trabalhando para toda a cidade e navios para transportar mercadorias, e os enviei para todas as cidades e aldeias, para os fracos e doentes e para aqueles que eram desafortunados.

3And I had nine mills working for the whole city and ships to carry goods, and I sent them into every city and into the villages to the feeble and sick and to those that were unfortunate.

4E eu tinha trezentos e quarenta mil burros nômades, e destes reservei quinhentos, e ordenei que os descendentes destes fossem vendidos e os rendimentos fossem dados aos pobres e necessitados.

4And I had three hundred and forty thousand nomadic asses, and of these I set aside five hundred, and the offspring of these I ordered to be sold and the proceeds to be given to the poor and the needy.

5Pois de todas as terras os pobres vieram ao meu encontro.

5For from all the lands the poor came to meet me.

6Pois as quatro portas da minha casa foram abertas, cada uma ficando a cargo de um vigia que tinha que ver se havia alguém vindo pedindo esmola, e se me veriam sentado em uma das portas para que pudessem sair pela outra e levar o que precisassem.

6For the four doors of my house were opened, each, being in charge of a watchman who had to see whether there were any people coming asking alms, and whether they would see me sitting at one of the doors so that they could leave through the other and take whatever they needed.

7Também tinha trinta mesas fixas postas a qualquer hora só para os estrangeiros, e também tinha doze mesas postas para as viúvas.

7I also had thirty immovable tables set at all hours for the strangers alone, and I also had twelve tables spread for the widows.

8E se alguém vinha pedir esmola, encontrava comida na minha mesa para levar tudo o que precisava, e eu não mandei ninguém sair de casa com o estômago vazio.

8And if any one came asking for alms, he found food on my table to take all he needed, and I turned nobody away to leave my door with an empty stomach.

9Eu também tinha três mil e quinhentas juntas de bois, e selecionei dessas quinhentas e fiz com que cuidassem da aração.

9I also had three thousand five hundred yokes of oxen, and I selected of these five hundred and had them tend to the plowing.

10E com estes eu tinha feito todo o trabalho em cada campo por aqueles que iriam tomá-los e os rendimentos das suas colheitas eu reservava para os pobres na sua mesa.

10And with these I had done all the work in each field by those who would take it in charge and the income of their crops I laid aside for the poor on their table.

11Eu também tinha cinquenta padarias de onde mandava [o pão] para a mesa dos pobres.

11I also had fifty bakeries from which I sent [the bread] to the table for the poor.

12E selecionei escravos para seu serviço.

12And I had slaves selected for their service.

13Houve também alguns estranhos que viram a minha boa vontade; eles próprios desejavam servir como garçons.

13There were also some strangers who saw my good will; they wished to serve as waiters themselves.

14Outros, em dificuldades e sem condições de ganhar a vida, vieram com o pedido dizendo:

14Others, being in distress and unable to obtain a living, came with the request saying:

15“Rogamos-te, visto que também podemos preencher este cargo de garçons (diáconos) e não temos posse, tenha piedade de nós e nos avance dinheiro para que possamos ir às grandes cidades e vender mercadorias.

15"We pray thee, since we also can fill this office of waiters (deacons) and have no possession, have pity upon us and advance money to us in order that we may go into the great cities and sell merchandise.

16E o excedente de nosso lucro podemos dar como ajuda aos pobres, e então devolveremos a ti o teu próprio (dinheiro).

16And the surplus of our profit we may give as help to the poor, and then shall we return to thee thine own (money).

17E quando ouvi isso, fiquei feliz por eles terem tirado tudo de mim para a criação de caridade para os pobres.

17And when I heard this, I was glad that they should take this altogether from me for the husbandry of charity for the poor.

18E de boa vontade dei-lhes o que queriam e aceitei a fiança por escrito, mas não tomei nenhuma outra garantia deles, exceto o documento escrito.

18And with a willing heart I gave them what they wanted, and I accepted their written bond, but would not take any other security from them except the written document.

19E eles foram para o exterior e deram aos pobres na medida em que tiveram sucesso.

19And they went abroad and gave to the poor as far as they were successful.

20Freqüentemente, porém, alguns de seus bens eram perdidos na estrada ou no mar, ou eram roubados.

20Frequently, however, some of their goods were lost on the road or on the sea, or they would be robbed of them.

21Então eles vinham e diziam: “Rogamos-te, age generosamente conosco para que possamos ver como podemos restituir-te o que é teu”.

21Then they would come and say: "We pray thee, act generously towards us in order that we may see how we can restore to you thine own".

22E quando ouvi isso, tive simpatia por eles e entreguei-lhes a fiança, e muitas vezes depois de lê-la antes deles, rasguei-a e libertei-os de sua dívida, dizendo-lhes:

22And when I heard this, I had sympathy with them, and handed to them their bond, and often having read it before them tore it up and released them of their debt, saying to them:

23“O que consagrei para o benefício dos pobres, não tirarei de você”.

23"What I have consecrated for the benefit of the poor, I shall not take from you’’.

24E então não aceitei nada do meu devedor.

24And so I accepted nothing from my debtor.

25E quando um homem de coração alegre veio até mim dizendo: Não preciso ser obrigado a ser um trabalhador remunerado para os pobres.

25And when a man with a cheerful heart came to me saying: I am not in need to be compelled to be a paid worker for the poor.

26Mas desejo servir os necessitados à tua mesa”, e ele consentiu em trabalhar e comeu a sua parte.

26But I wish to serve the needy at thy table", and he consented to work, and he ate his share.

27Mesmo assim, dei-lhe o salário e voltei para casa regozijante.

27So I gave him his wages nevertheless, and I went home rejoicing.

28E quando ele não quis aceitá-lo, eu o forcei a fazê-lo, dizendo: “Eu sei que você é um trabalhador que procura e espera pelo seu salário, e você deve aceitá-lo”.

28And when he did not wish to take it, I forced him to do so, saying: "I know that thou art a laboring man who looks for and waits for his wages, and thou must take it."

29Nunca adiei o pagamento do salário do mercenário ou de qualquer outro, nem retive em minha casa por uma única noite o salário que lhe era devido.

29Never did I defer paying the wages of the hireling or any other, nor keep back in my house for a single evening his hire that was due to him.

30Aqueles que ordenhavam as vacas e as ovelhas sinalizavam aos transeuntes que deveriam receber a sua parte.

30Those that milked the cows and the ewes signaled to the passersby that they should take their share.

31Pois o leite corria em tal abundância que se transformava em manteiga nas colinas e à beira das estradas; e junto às rochas e às colinas jazia o gado que dera à luz a sua prole.

31For the milk flowed in such plenty that it curdled into butter on the hills and by the roadside; and by the rocks and the hills the cattle lay which had given birth to their offspring.

32Pois meus servos se cansaram de guardar o alimento das viúvas e dos pobres e dividi-lo em pequenos pedaços.

32For my servants grew weary keeping the meat of the widows and the poor and dividing it into small pieces.

33Pois eles amaldiçoavam e diziam: “Ah, se tivéssemos da sua carne que pudéssemos ficar satisfeitos”, embora eu fosse muito gentil com eles,

33For they would curse and say: "Oh that we had of his flesh that we could be satisfied’’, although I was very kind to them,

34Eu também tinha seis harpas [e seis escravos para tocar harpas] e também uma cítara, um decacorde, e tocava durante o dia.

34I also had six harps [and six slaves to play the harps] and also a cithara, a decachord, and I struck it during the day.

35E eu peguei a cítara, e as viúvas responderam após as refeições.

35And I took the cithara, and the widows responded after their meals.

36E com o instrumento musical lembrei-lhes de Deus que deveriam dar louvor ao Senhor.

36And with the musical instrument I reminded them of God that they should give praise to the Lord.

37E quando minhas escravas murmuravam, então eu pegava os instrumentos musicais e tocava tanto quanto elas teriam feito por seus salários, e lhes dava descanso de seu trabalho e suspiros.

37And when my female slaves would murmur, then I took the musical instruments and played as much as they would have done for their wages, and gave them respite from their labor and sighs.
