1Veja então, meu amado, ouvimos estas coisas sobre nossos pais, os patriarcas.
1See then, my beloved, we have heard these things about our fathers the patriarchs.
2Vamos, portanto, imitar seus feitos e suas virtudes, e seu amor a Deus e seu amor aos homens, e sua hospitalidade, para que sejamos dignos de nos tornarmos seus filhos no reino dos céus, e que eles possam orar por nós a Deus para que ele possa nos salvar dos castigos no inferno, dos quais o santo patriarca Jacó falou em suas palavras cheias de toda doçura, quando ele ensinou seus filhos sobre os castigos e os chamou de espada do Senhor Deus.
2Let us therefore emulate their deeds and their virtues, and their love of God and their love of men, and their hospitality, that we may be worthy to become their sons in the kingdom of the heavens, and that they may pray for us to God that he may save us from punishments in hell which the holy patriarch Jacob spoke about in his words full of all sweetness, when he taught his sons about the punishments and called them the sword of the Lord God.
3Estes são o rio de fogo que está preparado e que envolve em suas ondas os pecadores e aqueles que se contaminaram.
3These are the river of fire that is prepared, and which engulfs sinners in its waves and those that have defiled themselves.
4Estas são as coisas que o patriarca Jacó revelou quando ensinou aos demais filhos: que aqueles que amam a instrução deveriam ouvi-lo e fazer o que é bom em todos os momentos, amar uns aos outros e se esforçar por amor e piedade.
4These are the things the patriarch Jacob revealed when he taught the rest of his sons, that those that love instruction should listen to him and do what is good at all times, and love one another, and strive after love and pity.
5Pois a piedade triunfa sobre o julgamento e o amor cobre uma multidão de pecados; e novamente, quem tem piedade de um pobre empresta usura a Deus.
5For pity triumphs over judgement and love covers a multitude of sins; and again, he who has pity on a poor man lends on usury to God.
